RE: Repairing a cover

Thanks for the replies, i ended up going to a boat cover and upholstery shop. They recomended a patch material called Tear Patch. Wiped everything down with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, then applied the patch. It was $5 for a piece about 3" wide by a foot long. I cut it in half so i have one piece on the underside and one on the top. It is solid !! The material is clear, so you really don't even see it.

Repairing a cover

Two years ago we purchased a cover for the camper that i have been very pleased with. Unfortunatley i found a small tear about 3 inches long and need to fix it before the snow flies. Would Eternabond be suitable for this kind of fix? I was thinking of a piece on the underside and then a piece on the top. I'm open to any suggestions....thanks !

RE: hw drain plug

On that subject, will using a brass nipple connected to the HW tank cause corrosion too ? Mine has a brass nipple connected to a short piece of water supply line with a simple shut off at the end to drain the tank. It makes draining the tank really easy. Am i looking at problem down the road if i leave the brass in, or should i replace it with nylon ?

RE: What size generator?

We've had our Champion 46540 for a little over a year now and are very happy with it. I run it once a month for 10 minutes or so, and it amazes me how quickly it starts. Always on the first pull. No complaints from others on how loud it is, but i also don't run it constantly, just enough to charge the batteries. I did buy the wheel kit from Champion, that was worth it. You won't regret choosing the Champion.

RE: Getting a couple more years out of an awning...

Last spring i discovered the same problem that you mentioned. I had 3 spots where the top surface layer of the fabric was cracked. I went to my local pool supply store and got a patch kit that did a good job for me. It is designed to work underwater. It stopped the crack from turning into a tear and bought me one more year. My awning will be 10 yrs old next season, so i figure its done its job. I'll have a look at it in the spring, who knows maybe i'll be surprised and be a able squeeze another year out of it !!

RE: Floor vent covers

Thanks all for the replies. After reading the replies i think i am going to "go metal". I have vacuumed the ducts out, but i think this time i am going to try to actually wipe them out with a dust cloth with some spray on it. Since there isn't more than 3 or 4 feet between ducts, i am going to find something flexible that i can wrap a cloth around and push to the next duct. Having the two dogs with us for a week at a time in the camper leaves a lot of hair ending up in the ducts. I like tomdrobin's idea of the adjustable ones closest to the furnace. Thanks again !

Floor vent covers

I was noticing a few of the plastic floor heat vent covers were cracked and could stand to be replaced. As far as plastic vs. metal, are there advantages one over the other ?

Atwood Furnace problem

Earlier this cool and rainy afternoon i decided it might be a good idea to fire up the furnace before next weekends trip up north. After a few minutes i noticed the air wasn't getting warm so i decided to open the access door on the outside. Everything looked ok, so i tried to fire it up again. I stood outside, heard the blower start up,then the spark igniter, and briefly the burner would light, then immediately go out. This happened three more times before i shut it down and decided to blow out the burner tube with some compressed air. Still it wouldn't fire. I repeated this a few times and decided i would try to get the compressed air further in the burn chamber by removing the vent tube. Finally, i was able to get the darn thing to light. I let the furnace run for 15 or 20 minutes to burn off anything that might have been sitting in there. I let it cool down for about an hour and fired it up again to be sure things were working properly...i am happy to say it worked. My bigger concern is how would i go about cleaning the burn chamber a bit more thoroughly ? Or would it be wiser to run the furnace every other month seeing how it is only used a few times in the fall. The owners manual doesn't give any trouble shooting help aside from calling for service. Anyone have a thought ?

RE: The New "GREEN" Travel Trailer.....sweet

Skipnchar wrote : "Over all, the plution and ecological damage done by TOWING one around will MORE than use up any slight advantage in using recycled. the term GREEN and RVing are about as diametrically opposed as you can get. "
I couldn't agree more.....spending $30,000 "going green" seems steep. I think if someone REALLY was serious about "going green" they would be piching tent.It looks like they are marketing that line up to people who want to make themselves feel good about the environment. Seriously... that's about as big a sell of bs as it gets. I don't see this group surviving very long.

RE: Dont go north on 95 through MD if you can avoid it!

Three weeks ago on our way to Pa. we drove on the NYS Thruway from Albany south to get to Rt 287. At the toll plaza i was shocked to pay $19.80 !!! We decided on the way home to go through the Poconos on Rt 209 to get a little further north. What a nice ride, and plenty of spots to stop if needed. I can't wait to get out of this state, it seems like they have taxes for everything ! Now our jack@ss governor has decided that we need new license plates. Thats going to cost you $25.00 i think he said .... (someone correct me if i'm wrong) and if you want to keep your current plate #, an extra $25.00. All that revenue these jerks in Albany have at their disposal, and we are screwed at every turn. Our Founding Fathers designed our Government to be of the People, by the People, and for the People. Remember that when you have the opportunity to exercise your right to VOTE. Better yet, write your Congressman or Woman and remind them that it is the people they are supposed to be representing, not Special Intrest. Oops..... i really went off there! :D

RE: Soft spot in floor of Jayco

Jay- fixing the floor isn't as bad as it sounds. Finding the source is where it gets tricky. Saturday after we got home from a week long camping trip i pulled up the rug and linoleum where i had a soft spot by the rear entry door. I discovered that where the outside power outlet goes through sidewall, the seal failed and water gradually weakened the OSB (waferboard)below it. I cut out the bad OSB with a circular saw until i reached solid wood, a piece about a foot wide and 42" long.I made the cut to the side of the floor joist. A good sharp wood chisel helps to square things up where the saw won't reach. I tried to make the cut as square as possible. After cleaning everything out, damp insulation and debris, i put a fan on it for a few days. The joist are solid so i am lucky. I ripped down a 2x4 to the width of the floor joist and will sistered it to the floor joist. While i had the floor cavity open, i put a light under the trailer to make sure the underbelly was solid. I found a small hole where, when the underbelly was stapled to the framing, the person who did it missed the floor joist on one side completly. That resulted in a small spot where rain water would enter when on the road. I cut new R13 insulation to size, a new piece of OSB to size, and will screwed it down to the 2x4's i will sistered to the floor joist. I am going to caulk all the joints. After that , i will staple down the old linoleum which is completly dried out and folded back down the padding and rug and staple them down with a brad nailer. I plan on letting things dry out far a day or two longer to be safe. Yeah, it's all a pain in the a@@, but the only cost so far for me was a 4X8 sheet of OSB, a roll of insulation, and my time. If you are handy, go for it, I wouldn't go the route of floor resin, cut out the bad OSB because once it gets wet, its toast. In the long run, you'll be glad you did. Take your time, you CAN dot it !

Soft Spot in corner

I noticed a soft spot in the corner by the rear door and decided to tear into it when we got home this afternoon after a restful week away. It looks like the outside outlet seal may have failed and let enough moisture in and started the floor to rot out there. While i didn't find puddles of water, just weakened osb. The carpet hid the discolored linoleum but kept the carpet dry ! The framing is solid and i have plenty of scrap 3/4" plywood to patch the floor. While ripping the floor apart i was noticing some real poor workmanship and just don't undertand how people spend $15k + for these trailers?? We bought it used 2 years ago and got a great deal so i guess i shouldn't be surprised. I plan on resealing the outlet and recaulking all of the joints in the area too. I also plan on going over all points where the side walls have been penetrated and resealing those points as well. Looks like i have a fun project ahead :W

RE: Rude to walk through someone else's campsite?

Anywhere we've camped the rules state do not cut through another campers site. It's clear and simple. People that do it are careless and disrespectful PERIOD. We have our dog tied up on our site relaxing like we do or just sitting by our chair and if someone decides to take a shortcut, i just let the dog scare the @#*^ out of them. I simply say to them that if they were walking where they should, my dog wouldn't have to let them know they didn't belong there.

RE: Making quiet coffee

i use the same thing as KnLMurakami, except mine is a vintage Reveware Copperbottom Percolator i found at a garage sale for 50¢ ! i took me a few times brewing coffee with it to master it, but it's great when there isn't electricity. it never leaves the camper except when we had a power outage at home. if i were looking for one, i'd check Flea Markets and garage sales.

tow / haul problem

the tow haul switch on my 03 Silverado stopped working last week. i hadn't engaged it since last fall during our last camping trip. after doing a search online and some investigating under the dash i found out that one of the wires coming out of the shift lever under the steering column trim had cracked loosing contact. it is anchored at one point and when shifting out of park it always bends back and forth, eventually resulting in a cracked wire. i was able to reconnect using barrel connectors and electrical tape, but i think that because the wire is always moving due to shifting from park to drive etc... this is a temp fix at best. anyone ever had the same problem ? would soldering wire to an aftermarket switch with enough slack to keep the wire from bending be a better solution ?

to clean the side of the trailer, try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser pads, they are amazing. i would try that rubbing VERY lightly to see if the soot starts to break down but being careful about the finish. good luck !
