RE: How do we keep 2 yr old from opening screen door?

I'd like to add one more thought to the subject. Those that have stated they've had a child to fall out the door and didn't get seriously injured, you have been blessed. I have a cousin, when she was 2-3 yrs. old, fell out of a dining chair, hit the corner of something. She had a brain injury. Went through surgery but left her with a learning disability, walks with a limp, and lost the use of her right arm and hand. She reminds me of someone that's had a stroke. Her life was totally ruined. Bumps on the head can be serious. Recommendation for bike riding is helmets to prevent head injury. Something to think about.

RE: How do we keep 2 yr old from opening screen door?

I remember an old says from my elders, an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. My worry is my 2 yr. old G-Son loves to put his face to a window or door looking out to see what's going on outside. These cheap rv screen doors just don't get it. Mine will secured.

RE: How do we keep 2 yr old from opening screen door?

I have the same problem with our 2 yr. old G-Son. He likes to play in the TT, even if we're not camping. The no no's work but still continually guard the door with my life. If a child fell out the door, bad injuries could happen. I went out and tried the step up handle, it works perfect. I could engage and disengage the handle from inside the TT. Just stick your hand throught the small slide in the screen. A child somewhat older could get out without a problem. Lift up handle and turn it around. Thanks that solved my problem, good info.

RE: Happy Mother's Day

Mothers Day had a different meaning for us this year. My Mom has been gone 9 years, but my DH'S Mother passed away Nov. 2012. Enjoyed the day with our sons, their wives and G-kids. My DH reminded that I have big shoes to fill. I'm the only G-mother our 2 year old G-Son has. Our D-N-Law's mom passed away several years ago with an aneurysm. His Great-G-Mother's on both sides of the family have all poassed. When they were leaving he shouted to me I Love You. His parents said that was the first time they had heard him tell anyone he loved them. That made my day. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

RE: Blood sugar control

Thanks for the reminder of cinnamon caps. A friend of mine told me several years ago that it had many health benefits. I believe she was taking it to lower her cholesterol. All my mom's siblings were diabetics but she was a little woman, not much over 100 lbs. she loved her deserts and would eat it before her regular meal, never had a problem. I've seen the results diabetes can have on our bodies. I have a neighbor that lost one leg due to an infection that wouldn't heal. An uncle lost both his legs from the diabetes, and smoking. I will get mine under control, whatever it takes. I'm thankful we have our rv and can do most of our cooking while traveling. We just got back from a 4 day trip to Gatlinburg Tn. this week, DH didn't want to take the rv for such a short spur of the moment trip. Eating out every meal was hard and temptations everywhere, especially the hot yeast rolls.

Blood sugar control

I have a few questions about diabetes. I go to my family Dr. every 6 months for blood work and whatever she decides she wants done. My story is, type 2 diabetes runs in both my mom and dads side of the family. My dr. stays on top of my blood sugar readings. She wants a fasting blood sugar reading of 100 or less. Mine has been in the range of 110 or less after fasting and she has a fit. I check mine at home and recently it stays in 120's first thing in morning. and up to 150 after eating. Didn't check it first thing this morning but had a small breakfast and went outside to do some work, 3 hrs. later checked it and it's 132. I know these reading are very low to someone that has been diagnosed as a diabetic. I want to do everything I can to control mine if possible without meds. I have quit sugar and try to watch my carbs. My 6 months checkup is in 3 week. Any advice from those that deal with this on a daily basis. I plan to step up my exercise program. I'm not a large person, but maybe 10lb. loss would help. I can see another glucose test in my future. Thanks

RE: Corn chowder recipes

I have a delicious corn chowder recipe from the Old Mill Resturant, Pigeon Forge Tn. They always serve a sampling of the chowder and corn fritters to munch on while meal is being prepared.
Corn Chowder
1 tbs. margarine
3 cups diced onions
3/4 cup crumbs(from unsalted oyster crackers)
1/4 cup flour
2 cups water
1 cup clam juice
2 cups chicken broth
3 cups diced potatoes
2 cups half and half
2 cups corn kernels ( if frozen defrost)
1 red and 1 green pepper(chopped)
garlic and onion powder to taste
Directions
1 red and 1 green pepper, chopped and sauteed briefly in butter, add salt and fresly ground white pepper, to taste.
Mix liquids and butter, add potatoes and onions, and cook until done. Mix cracker crumbs, flour and seasonings. Add to potato mixture. Add peppers, mix well, bring to a boil, add cream and corn, simmer 15-20 minutes.
We use the special chowder seasoning which is not available at grocery stores. To compensate for this ingredient, season to taste with garlic powder and onion powder.
Makes 2 quarts

RE: Boy, do I feel dumb...

I would like to say we had the same problem with our new Jayco TT. We purchased the Whitehawk, with the small outside frig. The frig was always running while plugged in. We didn't see a need for it to be on. Couldn't find the plug nor an on and off switch. The compartment was such a tight fit, DH had a time trying to find the switch. He rubbed his hand across the top and felt a knob, finally got it to move and frig went off. Very bad design as far as I'm concerned.

Clover please go away

Our lawn has finally started to grow, nice and green but the pesky clover is taking over. DH sprayed several times last year with a product recommended by a garden center, it knocked back the white larger leafed, but it did nothing with the Japanese type that has a yellow bloom. Only info. I have found is spray and kill everthing and start over. We have centipede and don't plan on killing it. If anyone has a recommendation, sure would be appreciated. Thanks

Just interested in knowing what kind of business you're building. If it's near Gatlinburg Tn. we frequent Pigeon Forge quite often.

RE: Best grill for RVing?

We have 2 gas grills for camping. A Coleman Roadtrip, plus a small kettle type for when it's just the 2 of us. While in Fl. this winter we purchased a small kettle type charcaol grill. Steaks taste so much better cooked on a charcoal grill. It can be a problem as you stated when the wind is high. I had good luck by using the match light with a paper towel rolled up to get it started. Made a very hot cooker.

RE: Why snowbird vs full-time?

We enjoy traveling, but also love coming home where we say There's no place like home. Since the senior status has sneeked up on us, the time we spend with our children, G-Kids are precious moments. Life is too short.

RE: King Arthur flour

Folks I just have to say this loaf of bread I made today is to die for. I made one last week but had family over for dinner and it was gone quickly. I sliced the top off while it was still warm, so good. I guess I need to slice and share, don't need to eat the whole loaf. Thanks for the info about KA flour. Best bread i've ever made.

RE: King Arthur flour

I went on a quest to find the King Arthur flour and found plenty at our local Food World. Wheat, all purpose and unbleached bread flour. I plan to make a loaf in my bread maker tomorrow. DH isn't much of a bread eater and I love homemade, my willpower will be tested.

RE: vintage jar

DH remembered his G-Father telling him that all the families were relocated from their homes when TVA power flooded their community. Everyone had moved by 1938. It's amazing how perfect this little jar looks. It has to be at least 75 yrs. old. We now live in this community. TVA offered the land back and sold to families that wanted to move back. DH's ancestors bought their's plus much more. Our land in on a peninsula, river on one side and lake on the other.

vintage jar

My DH and his uncle were working in an old cemetary where his G-Great Grandmother is buried. As they were cutting bushes they dug up a small glass jar. Wondering how old it might be. Couldn't find much about it on computer. It's embossed like this
"Finest Quality"
BENN
HUBB
PEANUT
BUTTER
NET WT. 8 ozs.
BENNETT-HUBBARD
CANDY COMPANY
CHATTANOOGA, TENN.
I typed in all caps. as it is on the jar. I know it's a collectors jar, but just wondering about the date. Thanks

RE: Possible Park Closings in Alabama

Ala. in the last several years has been buying private land and putting it in a program called forever wild land trust. I don't know much about it but it can be used for hunting and hiking. Dec. 2012 they finalized a purchase of 11,364 acres of land in the county where we live. Total cost of this purchase was 9.3 million.
1 M private donations
5.3 M Ala. dept. of conservation
3 M federal grant
One would think if this kind of money was available for 1 purchase of land. Our parks system would be in better shape. The state owns more parcels of land across the state. Like I said don't know all the details, but the state continues to purchase large parcels of private land for this program.
