RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

I agree with The Texan, we don't see any appreciable savings over what we spend in the states. BUT! Life is good here, no mosquitos, no A/C needed, no heat needed, better and healthier seafood and produce, and we sure couldn't live near the sea in the states for what we can here. The energy savings is "eaten up" with Jorge's steamed clams and margaritas.

RE: Where do you keep your portable generator?

Our generator was too heavy for our (DH-installed) cargo rack and it came unwelded one dark and stormy night along the I-20 in Louisiana. Not fun. Now it rides in the bed of the truck in front of the hitch, with a grill cover bungied around it. Works fine.

RE: Easiest Thanksgiving Menu I could find.

I was once told it was my turn to host everyone for Thanksgiving dinner, although they ALL knew I do not cook. They had it coming: everything except the bird came out of a box or can. It can be done: Hungry Jack mashed potatoes, Stovetop stuffing, canned gravy, corn, green beans, and cranberries. Even the dinner rolls were those rolled-in-the-can ones. And DH did the turkey on the Weber. I thought it all tasted fine, but nobody has requested an encore. I'm quite sure Cracker Barrel will do a better job!

RE: When first time snowbirding.....

I think what we did as new fulltimers was typical, and I don't recommend it: we went everywhere and anywhere, back when diesel was $4/gal., spent way too much money, put way too many miles on, and were stunned by the bank balances. We also joined a high dollar RV park membership (WHR, don't recommend them either) and had to keep turning around and driving home to care for elderly parents. If I had it to do over, I'd go 200 miles/day max and stay a week or more. I'd use Passport America for a long while before I decided on anything more expensive. Turned out we wanted to stay near the grandkids in Minnesota when weather permits (May through September MAX) and then our place in Mexico the rest of the year. So much for wanting to see the world! You'll figure it out, but I'd advise slow and and easy so you don't miss anything.

RE: Nogales border crossing Nov 2009

The only difference we noticed was they spoke English and were friendly. Very fast, we left Nogales WalMart at 6 AM, and were done with the FMT thing in 20 minutes. No inspection.

RE: Nickle and diming at Campgrounds

Re: how having pets justifies an add-on cost.
The kind of pet owners that allow their pets to bark, dig holes, evacuate anywhere without picking it up etc. would never shell out extra $$$ for them. They probably don't even vaccinate them. Irresponsible, don't bother to train them, don't watch them, don't care. How many posts have we read here where someone says their stay was ruined by someone else's (barking/pooping/boisterous) animals and would never return? $$$ lost.
I like the idea of a pet DEPOSIT, refunded at checkout after a quick inspection of the site, and bearing in mind any complaints received during their stay.
One solution to the cost of high usage of electric and water: lower rates with metered utilities, which I've never seen outside of monthly or seasonal rates. It converted me from indiscriminately running water while toothbrushing, rig washing, etc. and keeping the AC at 70. Has anyone ever seen metered utilities for overnight or short stays?
Both of these necessitate having staff available to inspect sites at checkin/checkout, but I'm certain some campers would "sneak out" without paying for metered utilities.

RE: Pre-trip shopping -- stuff to bring?

Well, we USED to stock up on the Bombay gin, but read recently they limit that and might check, so forget that. A few big jars of Jif extra crunchy, good paper plates (mostly styrofoam and the paper ones you can read through there), cat and dog food (they're fussy) and cat litter (had to use beach sand for a while once: he wasn't happy). Everything else I buy there, I can LIVE on glorious vegetables and seafood!

RE: Curious at 50+

1,2: I believe most fulltimers have internet and it's easy to find services with internet.
4: Also easy to scope out the next night's stay via the internet, but there's always WalMart.
5: Internet, phone, however you normally would in a S&B
6: Escapees in Livington TX has a place for you. Others just park it in a permanent spot, others sell and get a S&B.
7: Yes. Mail forwarding services, prices vary, mine is America's Mailbox in SD, runs $150 annually mas o menos, plus postage.

RE: Massage Therapy Work at RV Resorts?

At the WHR park in Kino Bay, Mexico, they have a woman come out periodically to do massages. The signup sheet fills up really quickly, same with the manicure/pedicure signup sheet. There's a WHR in Casa Grande.

RE: Nogales Flu Story

In the Mexico category, there's a thread that suggests people over 50 aren't getting it because it's similar to a strain from way back that we've already had and are immune to.
Few enough benefits of old age, I'll take it!

Guess what was in our Suburban furnace? Eeewww!

It started making a very loud clattering noise. DH figured bearings or motor, got out the manual and proceeded to take it apart. Found a very dessicated mouse along with TONS of pet hair and dust/crud EVERYWHERE in there. After cleaning everything thoroughly, he put it back together and VOILA! No clattering. I put this in fulltiming because we and our dog and cat have lived fulltime in this rig for 4 years, and nowhere have I read to beware of buildup like this (not the mouse, the rest of it). The maintenance sticky here doesn't say to look inside the heater for crud. Just an FYI for fulltimers with pets. And mice. And yes, the furnace removal and disassembly was difficult.

RE: baby proofing the doors?

If you have the outside grab bar, from inside, reach through the slider and rotate the grab bar across the screen door. It can only open an inch then.

RE: How many cats is too many?

I say go for it. They are loved and wanted: lots of cats can't report that. Your plan sounds safe for them, and as you say, it's only temporary. Get a good vacuum.

Guess what's under the carpet?

Long story short: hot weather/hose clamp loosened/flooded carpet/smell (pets)/tore it out cuz it never would have dried here (Louisiana)/VOILA! The fake hardwood vinyl flooring was laid throughout! Looks nice, can barely see the tack holes from the edging strip. Left the carpet on the slide, it didn't get wet and doesn't get dirty, looks sort of like an area rug. Nice ending to a bad day.

We average 20 at 60mph, and 10 towing. On one long, windy day in West Texas, averaged 6.
