RE: Everglades (Tamiami Trial) CG's

Thanks Avan! I don't know how I missed those. Looks interesting. Happy Thanksgiving! Steve

Everglades (Tamiami Trial) CG's

(I've searched and looked on RVparkreviews.com) When we came through the other day I noticed 3 or 4 CG's on both sides of the road. Did not see any signs and they appeared to be govt owned, not commercial. They looked to be fairly new with pads and, at least, elect hookup...I could be wrong. As I said, I can find no reference to any of them. I'm not talking about the commercial ones that are signed. Anyone have a link or can provide any info? Thanks in advance!

RE: DircTV HD Crank-up Antenna

You do NOT need the 5 lnb Slimline dish unless your HD locals are on 110 or 119. We have the 3 lnb Slimline which has the 3 in one horn so it looks like a single lnb and we get everything DirecTV has in HD since our locals are in Houston... Ok, now I'm still confused. I've searched (incl DBStalk) and don't know what birds I'm on. We're Greenville/New Bern NC and they have HD locals but it doesn't say what bird. I know our SD locals are on a diff bird because we have 2 dishes at the stick house. BUT, we get East and West Coast DNS in the MH. I don't care about getting our locals when we are on the road. So, would the 3 LNB thing work in this scenario? (And would I be able to record 2 channels at the same time with the DVR?) MANY thanks!!!

RE: DircTV HD Crank-up Antenna

Ask your neighbor about the dish and setup and HD programming, etc I had aleady asked him but he didn't know jack;) The arm has 3 LNB's so I assumed it was HD. I'm wrong? So, assuming that my orig question(s) are OBE, I assume there is no cheap fix to the roof top crank-up Wingard. That leaves me with the question(s): If I get a HD DVR can I use it with the rooftop SD antenna (of course the picture will be SD). If yes, I could set up a HD antenna on a tripod when we're staying for awhile.I find SD bird acquisition very easy...is HD significantly harder? Thanks much for the inputs so far. Steve

RE: DircTV HD Crank-up Antenna

Your neighbor's HD dish is round, like yours? If so, I've never seen that. It sure looks round but I wouldn't swear to it. If it is oval, it is slight so wonder if it could be attached to the Wingard arm?

DircTV HD Crank-up Antenna

Have DirctTV SD with a SD DVR. Use the Wingard crankup on the roof or a tripod if in the trees. Just looking at a neighbor's HD antenna on a tripod. The dish appears to be the same...the 3 horns are the only diff I see. Could I: Put a HD "horn/LNB" on the existing Wingard dish to get HD?If yes, would that retain my capability to record/watch 2 programs at the same time (I know I'd have to get a HD DVR).If no, can I still use the roof antenna with an HD DVR and get a HD dish for a tripod (if I were going to be in a place for several days I would use the HD tripod; for overnights just watch SD from the roof) Is an HD antenna difficult to aim? I have zero problems with a SD one even in foilage. I know I could get a HD antenna for the roof but the comptroller probably would not authorize the funds. Thanks in advance! Steve

RE: without elevation sensor???

Mine ate batteries so I installed a very small toggle switch to turn the battery on and off. Ahhhh...now that is a most excellent idea! Thanks!

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

We figure about $50/day. We do not count food because we'd have to eat at home and we've found it cheaper to eat SOB in non-fancy restaurants or in the RV. I count only gas, tolls, insurance and CG fees. An intangible is lower utility costs at home since we aren't there. I could stretch this further because if we weren't SOB, we'd be RV'ing somewhere, probably at greater cost. And, of course, the experience is priceless!

RE: Barnes & Noble Nook sold out!

You ney sayers haven't been with my DW when she runs out of books (reads 1-2 a day) and we can't find a second hand bookstore while we are on the road:E. Now she just turns the Kindle wireless on and downloads more. I like it because we've lightened our load appreciably.

RE: MS Streets & Trips

I find that, for myself, 350 miles per day is about right, but I have to fool the program to get it close. Anybody figure a better way? Jim...Maybe use the Measure function under tools? You can do multiple clicks along the route until you see the 350. You can also set a drivetime zone but that is driving hours based, not distance. I've found it quite close though. Steve

RE: Kindle Free Books --- Any Catch?

To us, the merit of Kindle (or any reader) is not just in the price of the book. It is being able to get books while on the road and not having to find a 2nd hand book store and not hauling many pounds of books. DW is an avid reader...1-2 books per day! We often could not find a 2nd hand store and could not find books during our Mexico travels. She can now carry about 1500 books and downloads them easily from anywhere on the East Coast, so far. Plus, she can do this from any internet connection if the Sprint doesn't work. I was afraid she'd miss the "feel" of paper but she hasn't. She also enjoys reading it on the beach in full sun.

RE: Mexican Vehicle Import Permit

Eddie, when did you send in your vehicle import paperwork? Did you just send the letter, hologram, bills of sales, ID, permit paperwork? We were told 3 to 6 months. We are hoping that long. You are the first we have heard of that has actually sent the originals and all in. Keep us posted. Marlin and Kay I did last year using the info that Turtle, Moisheh and QTLA provided. Took about 3 months but, apparently, the info on the computer happened quicker because we had no trouble crossing. My back up plan was to import the MH on DW's name.

RE: Road Tolls - What Am I?

Moisheh, they (in MX) almost always charge me for a bus and a car....2 separate transactions...they give me 2 receipts. Like someone else said, they often ask the person in the other booth what I'm towing since they cannot see it. But, you have done this more than I have, exponentially...and you speak the language (I have trouble with English)!

RE: Anyone know where to go for RV/home swap? hawaii/cali

A long shot, try www.vrbo.com. Its a site for Vacation Rentals By Owners. We have our place on there and have had folks offer to exchange houses...maybe you could search and see if any RV's pop up? Again, I know it is a long shot, but, who knows?

RE: Comparing maps and GPS etc.

We used S&T 2009 last year and I bought 2010 a few months ago. The covereage in MX was quite good, even in some small towns. The only 2 times I got lost was when I did not believe S&T and I went where I thought was right. I was wrong. It gets confused on toll vs free roads when they parallel closely but not significantly. 2009 crashed and hanged up a lot, always at the wrong time. In about 2,000 miles, 2010 has yet to crash or hang up. I haven't noticed any significant diff in coverage.

RE: Road Tolls - What Am I?

A diagram showing what is rolling on the ground and how its towed, pasted to the side window and viewable to the person manning the register, might help. But then again, how they ring that one in is still the question That seems a great idea! In my case I could add under the diagram (tow a jeep 4 down): "Autobus 2 Ejes + Automovil"

RE: DVR works great.....but won't play off the dish...

I was told on the AVS forums that the HD version will not work with no Satellite...BUT...a week or so ago on this forum, folks said it will. My R22 (non HD) will work and we do it often. Do a search about a week ago and someone gave the exact sequence but I just wait til it starts searching for the bird and then hit Exit Then hit List and there is what was recorded.

RE: Sewer tips

So our advice is never leave the T valves open and do lots of sloshing whenever you can. What can I say.. that advice is well-known around here. :) So what? Is there a shortage of electrons? :( To answer your question: "What can I say", how about say nothing if you don't have anything constructive? Hope this helps with your query.
