RE: The continuing Saga waiting for my new Ram 3500

15K on your truck and only filled DEF once? I have 12K and have gone through about 20 gallons. Of course 4500 miles was towing at 11.5 avg towing MPG.
My 10 K oil change, the Alabama dealer topped off all fluids, EXCEPT DEF. I asked him why not? He said, "Oh we don't do that as part of an oil change." I replied, Then why did you tell me you topped off all fluids?" His response, "Well we did." My response, "BullShoot...Go top off the DEF". They did. Fifteen minutes later the truck cam back to me. "OK...DEF full now. It took ten gallons. That'll be $56."
Last time I insist the dealer fills the DEF tank again at oil change. I didn't even know the tank would take 10 gallons, even if COMPLETELY empty. I had added 2.5 gallons back 2000 (towing) miles before, when I got the 500 mile to empty alert.
My bad, 15600kms.. which is 9700miles.. and yes only filled it once, still showing def OK. Tank is only 5 and a bit gallons, I think they pulled a fast one on you.
Still the point is that it is not inconvenient to fill the def tank from under the hood.

RE: The continuing Saga waiting for my new Ram 3500

Okay new guy question :B is there something wrong with the fuel/DEF fillers caps?
They look pretty tight to me from the photos. I've rented a few of cars at the airport that had the "cap-less" type fillers which seemed to work fine :R
DEF running down your paint job don't sound to good. Maybe that dreaded awful GM design is better :W
BTW.... Having to open the hood to fill the DEF tank is not my idea of a better design, but for some it's probably a good thing.
Maybe they should have put the windshield washer fluid in behind the fuel fill door too, I have to fill that way more often than the def tank...
15K on my truck now and have only filled the def tank once!

RE: New (old) Bigfoot, now some questions?

Now we are getting way off track.
All I wanted to know was how to remove this "sealant". From the OP:
Is there any known solvent for this "sealant"? I've tried a bunch of things without success, I would like to remove most of that and seal the roof penetrations properly.
I am still interested if you have the answer to that.
Have you had any luck getting the sealant off of your BF?

RE: 19.5 inch tires - ride reports ?

I tried them on a 2500 D/A and was really displeased with the harsh ride lodad or empty as well as the loss of a few mpg. I guess that was caused by the larger OD of the tires acting like I had a different rear axle ratio. Starting was like the truck was in a higer gear than first. Stopping required more pedal pressure also. I finally just sold the under rated, overloaded truck and bought the dually I should have had. I tried to use the 2500 because I had it for a few years prior to the purchase of the TC. The dually was a pleasure to drive and made using and driving with the TC on board fun again. If you are buying the truck for a TC, my opinion is just buy a truck with plenty of capacity to start with and don't spend lots of time and money to make something work.
Excellent advise!

RE: Problem at a loss of Ideas

If you have verified that both tires are in fact the same as in same load rating, then go back and make them change out the tires with tires with matching manufacturing dates or as close as possible. It is very possible that someone grabbed a tire with a lower load ratting.
Don
X2 on checking the load rating of the new tires... I put new E tires on my truck, the next year I was rotating them and I noticed that two of them were load range C, I was pissed to say the least!
On a side note, our work truck got new Goodyear Wrangler silent armor tires and that thing had the worst tread squirm, felt like it was on ice!

RE: 19.5 inch tires - ride reports ?

I am interested in hearing from people who are running single rear wheel trucks with 19.5 inch tire/wheel conversions.
What is your opinion of the ride / handling when using your truck for light hauling / empty driving - compared to properly deflated load range E 10 plys?
I did all the research on this subject as well before pulling the trigger on the 19.5's You will get some people saying no problems, rides good no tread squirm, takes a while for them to brake in before handling will improve... Well it is all bs or their idea of good is not the same as mine..
Loaded they make a huge difference! But unloaded, thats were the fun ends, rough ride, poor handling and noisy. I tried airing down, airing up etc. I now have a 3500 with factory wheels and tires that are able to cary my load.
Good luck!

RE: Finally..the CEL is gone...See How I Did It

NICE! You could drive that truck a long time and still get good $$ when it comes time to sell.. I have never seen a non 4*4 3500, had a friend looking high and low for one a couple of years ago, he gave up and got a 4*4.

RE: Should or shouldn't I???

Thanks for the replies folks. As I read them, I do have to ask some as they make it out like I've spent "tons" of money on it. Truth is, I really haven't. In the course of 10 years all I've done is what I wrote about. These things are mechanical and do break down and if I got 10 years of service out of everything original, I think then the truck has been a good truck. Sure no one likes to pay coo-coo bucks for parts/labor, but if the cost of what I spent is spread out over 10 years, then it's cheaper than a payment. Sure there is always the big ticket items that may fly the coop and by then, it's "OS". Maintenance is done religiously, injectors check out fine. Even w/ new trucks that are maintained well break down. I also know there are many naysayers about the 6.0, but given the vast quantity that Ford sold, the ones w/ the most problems are the ones heard the loudest while those that run w/o issues never are heard from. Mine hasn't been w/o issues. True. Am I upset w/ the way Ford handled some things, Yes. But the truck has done what I asked of it. Just hard to swallow spending 700-900 bucks/month--that's a house payment with a tax deduction at least.
I am sorry but that is a lot of repairs in 10 years, I would have gotten rid of that pig long ago. If buying a diesel I wouldn't even consider Ford for my next TV, Ram or GM all the way!
Just for comparison, I sold my 2003 GMC after 10yrs and 143k of ownership and only replaced a water pump and front rh wheel bearing, thats it! So when it came time to buy another truck I went back to GM.
Seriously, get rid of that truck.

Nice truck! I ordered my Silverado LTZ 3500 Duramax/Allison last year in Feb and it took 8 weeks to get, it has been an excellent truck and hasn't been back to the dealer for anything.

RE: Home Made Stableloads????

This is what I used to use on my 2500HD GMC. 2" round billet aluminum blocks with urethane bump stops on the tops.
Before loading the camper I would use a pry bar to open up the springs then slip the spacer into place and bolt it to the leaf spring, done!

RE: 2500 and 3500 trucks - 2012 sales numbers

For most of the 2012 my in Canada, Ram was offering a no charge on the Cummins. That works out to $9250 from the msrp, I think that would have made 3500's a little bit more attractive.

RE: 06 Dodge Cummins to an 06 Duramax LLY

I would do that trade but not for the 10 grand. If you end up spending a good portion of the 10 grand on injectors are you still going to be happy? The Chevy will definitely out pull the Dodge.
So, are you saying the common rail Cummins wont have any injector problems?
