RE: Is my half ton capable for this?

fair enough. I didn't downgrade from the F250 to a 1500 with the sole intention of doing this. I'm fine with doing one or another only, or getting a small travel trailer and maybe have someone else tow the boat. Just seeing if it was an option. Down the road I plan to move back up to a 350, possibly dually. In the meantime I'm absolutely loving this truck. Thanks for all the input. I'll start a new post if I ever get around to doing anything crazy, like buying a 4 wheel offroad camper or something.

RE: Is my half ton capable for this?

as fyi I'm thinking about something like this: http://www.truckcampermagazine.com/news/tcm-exclusive-2012-travel-lite-770-super-lite As a manufacturer, Travel Lite offers several non-slide hard side truck campers that fit into the half-ton niche. For example, the Travel Lite 700STD comes in at 1,935 pounds (wet and loaded with 500 pounds of stuff).

Is my half ton capable for this?

I sold my 08 F250 diesel long bed recently because it had a 6" lift and big tires. Had a Hallmark Vail pop up camper on it that I also sold. With the oversize cab I also had to add a spacer for it to clear the cab so with the lift kit the camper was almost a foot taller than an average truck. Just not usable. I decided to take a break and bought an 09 Chevy Silverado quad cab short bed 1500 Z71 with the 5.3 and I think gearing is around 3.43. I have a 21 ft power boat that weighs around 2800 pounds. I'm at work now and just pondering (I will look at door jamb weights later) but was thinking of getting a short bed hard side camper, one that does not go past the bumper and one that does not cover the tail lights with minimal necessities. Without going into hard core research you think a "lite" camper like that and my boat will be doable with my 1500?

RE: lifted truck for big Lance 1191?

well I don't have an 11 ft or a slide (mine is a pop up). But I have a 6" lift with 35" tires (in profile) and it drives pretty good. Its an older camper and a newer truck so I had to put a 4" spacer under the camper to clear the roof. So its way up there. I had custom made spacers for the stands to lift it higher. It does get a little wobbly so I have to make sure I'm mostly level when taking it on and off.

RE: First post - just inquiring on double towing with F250

Good point about the fifth wheel frame. That would definitely be a factor to know it can handle towing the weight. Would that be listed on the specs of the trailer or is there a better way to confirm that? I'll be purchasing used, probably a little older.

RE: First post - just inquiring on double towing with F250

good advise on the hitch receiver. If it becomes a reality I'll be doing most of my research on the hitch. And likely add airbags to the truck. Thanks for the advice so far. My neighborhood is full of RV's and boats so I'm sure I can get some advice from some of them as well. Think the fifth wheel will be more suited for the family than the slide in.

RE: First post - just inquiring on double towing with F250

Looked it up, truck is 21', boat maybe add 4 ft to be safe on either end is 25' and a 27' trailer would be 73. Your right, I looked again. Colorado is 70'. I don't mind a small fifth wheel. If I got a 25'er and double check the length on the boat I'm sure I'd be within a foot of legal. I'm guessing it would be easier to stay within a reasonable weight with that length of a camper? I realize the height of the truck could be an issue with some campers. it drives great though. I love it.

Colorado DOT website says legal tandem length is 75'

First post - just inquiring on double towing with F250

I am currently using a pop up slide in camper on My F250 so weight has not been any kind of issue. I recently purchased a 21ft speed boat that probably weighs in around 3,500 pounds. I will be putting marine grade electric brakes on it around Christmas. I currently drive a 2008 F250 4 door, long bed, diesel and is tuned, and have a 6" lift with 35" E rated tires. I live in Colorado so I know the length won't be an issue but was wondering if my truck would be capable of running around a 25' to 27' fifth wheel with the boat behind. I've read about some of the pin weights and such but want to get some first hand accounts if my truck is worthwhile for this or if I should just stick with the bed camper (which I suspect most will tell me to do). But since I have the boat now I don't really expect to be doing much backwoods camping which is why I bought the pop up in the first place and think a fifth wheel might be the better choice going forward.

RE: asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

I'm going to look into some water safe electric brakes. I agree with everyone the trailer probably should've had them to start with. I would prefer to control the brakes with the vehicle over surge. Talked to my local trailer shop and sounds like they can help me for a good price. No one really mentioned anything other than trailer brakes (and my high cog) so I think I'm set. Thanks

RE: asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

Well since I'm asking for advice and I'm getting it this last post is a complete waste of my time

RE: asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

Looks like I'll be adding brakes to the trailer. Read some articles that electric brakes ate the way to go now over surge brakes. Anyone have suggestions on a good place to buy a conversion kit to add the brakes? I'll be doing research in the meantime. Won't be towering the combo til spring anyways

rated for 3860 pounds per tire.

RE: asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

It is a fiberglass speed boat with a V8. I'll have to go check the tires and reply later. And yes, Stopping is always helpful. I will look into adding surge brakes. They don't look too expensive either.

RE: asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

I bought it with the lift and I like it with the lift. Has E rated tires.

asking weight police about my setup - camper and boat

I have a 2008 F250 4 dr long bed with a 6" lift and 35" tires Diesel. I currently have a 1989 hallmark vail pop up camper that drives very easily when loaded. (can see it in my profile). I just purchased a 21 foot boat that probably weighs about as much as any average boat. The shocks on my truck are in good shape. I have yet to pull both at the same time but feel pretty confident about the whole set up based on towing each individually. I'm sure there is a scale somewhere around but short of going through all the hassle any advice on towing the setup? I do not have any airbags or anything like that and trailer does not have brakes.

Need to build a new storage stand, need some advice

I have a 1989 Hallmark Vail pop up camper sitting on some stands in my back yard. It holds it pretty well as is but I need to build something a little sturdier. There is no cross beam across the top of the door so whenever I want to access the inside its hard to close again because the camper flexes just enough to make it not aligned. Its actually ruining my door by flexing it and making the laminate come off which I now need to repair. Its sitting on loose gravel with just a slight incline. I don't mind if the stand sits uneven, just as long as I can drop the camper on it completely and it sits even on the stand itself. I would prefer to make the stand a little tall for reloading on my lifted truck. Cheaper is better. Any advice on what type of stand (and how) I should build it considering the ground it will be on? Also, since winter is approaching I'll be getting a large tarp for it. What should I put on the roof (under the tarp) to help keep snow off? Maybe some pvc pipe and put them at angles?

RE: Truck camper on a 08 3/4 Ton Ford?

Don't have the measurements but you can see my 08 in my profile. Could've gone with 3" but wanted to make sure and went with 4" high density foam pieces under my camper. Hasn't squished a bit. Took camper on highway for a few hours, some back country roads, washboard roads, etc and is holding up perfect.

RE: Couple of newby battery questions about my pop up camper

Checked the camper. There is a regular 3 prong plug on the outside of the camper. Can I just attach a regular extension cord from the garage to the camper to charge the battery? Inside electrical panel says: Electrical center, power inverter, series 6400 from BW Manufacturing, Model 6415, LR-26446. It has a 120 plug in spot 10 amp, a couple fuses and a battery or converter switch. Hope thats enough to let me know.
