RE: Gov't to reduce Golden Access Discount to 10%
It WILL go away easily UNLESS you - all of us- take the time to comment back to the USFS AND copy to your congressional folks! Sit back and let it ride and you will lose! DO IT NOW!
This is 100% true. We're used to cursing what we don't like. It's time to starting acting; it's time for change.
I did my part.
Change... I think we've had enough of that and we'd like it to stay the way it is. Change is what got us in this mess.
LOL. Exactly. It was sarcasm.
RE: Considering full-timing with 6 kids... are we nuts?
I haven't even read the entire responses, but yes, you are nuts and although you may be thrilled at the thought, do a sanity check, man. Do it after kids are grown.

RE: Home Base after Retirement
I'll be retiring in three years at the age of 53. My career choice has afforded me the ability to retire earlier than some people. The DW has not had good luck with her different career paths over the years. Her only retirement income will be SS. I started some investments years back, in hopes that they would allow her to retire early with me, but like many investments in our economy, they have not done as well as expected.
Whatever you may find or wherever you may go, my opinion is that you shouldn't retire if your wife cannot. Continue to work until you can both retire together. My retirement was vested 5 years before my wife's. I continued to work and we continue to build. To do otherwise, well besides my opinion on it, may bring on burdens you can't imagine.
RE: Rent Versus Own RV
Most of us here are NOT casual RV'ers, so renting is out of the question - at least for us.
For a very once in a while (a week or two in the summer only) it probably makes sense to rent, at least financially.
If we ever did go with a rental, you can bet that we would leave the rental mattress at home and put one of our own in the unit while we had it.
X2!
RE: Leather Repair
It's part of living with a "dern" cat. I would recommend new furniture. When you get new furniture, remove the back claws too. Is there a reason to keep the back ones over the front ones? Don't cats do knead by nature? Anyway, I'm not much help am I?
RE: What is it about "RVing"
First to OP, I am with you. To answer your question honestly and simply: People are different by nature and have different exposures to environment. There's no one answer.
Generally speaking, vacationing is no less fun for the flyer/hotel folks despite how we feel. There are so many reasons, I don't know where to begin. 1) Local folks who grow up locally with minimal means often stay local and vacation somewhat local with possibly a DW lifetime trip. Limited exposure. 2) Those that have traveled some and have the means, may get a bug to travel and figure out how to do that either more often either by RV or airplane. More exposure. 3) Some folks "RV" as a means of low-cost living. Maybe they have a vagabond nature or maybe not. A means to an end.
Most simply work hard and do what they can. RV setups are often extensive and can seem complex to support. I call these folks "Robots" now. It's life for them, but they cannot see past the car payment, child's sports, that project that's due at work, family issues, etc, etc. They're just making a living the best way they know how.
For me, I have always traveled and loved it. I've had extensive exposure to different cultures/places. I did not RV most of my life. I worked and raised a family. Those who had travel trailers/RVs, etc were going to the woods for deer camp or going to the lake for a weekend.
I became exposed to the RV concept of travel/living when it became clear I could retire soon and thought about what I could do with my time. I spoke with folks about it and was introduced to the RV possiblity. LIGHT ON. I became obsessed. The rest is history.
Although RVing can mean many things to many folks, I would imagine that a great portion in this forum have the means to support their RV desires and are older in life and have finished the family thing, the work thing, and just want to slow down and enjoy their lives do whatever they want to do. Like I said; however, RVers are all different and do it in many ways. We are no better or nor worst than anyone else. Our light just shines differently and like someone said, let's keep it a secret! I kind of don't want to share it with everyone. I can tell you that when I explain what I'm doing and my dreams to any detail, most people can see what I can see. They just can't afford it or aren't at that point in life yet. Food for thought.
RE: how long can black water be kept "on board"?
Well, I take the opposite opposite position here. I say, dump it as often as you can flush it as often as you can. If you can't, then get a tote and haul it away. Add enough water so it will flush out. You can eliminate smells for only so long. But think about this and follow this logic.
If you use the toilet in your house, and I mean really use it, and do not flush, how long can "it" sit there before you're driven out of the house because of the smell. Now, add chemical to the toilet bowl and try to cover the odor. How long can you do that?
Your tank is just a holding tank. If you let stuff sit in it, it will build up, stuff will stick, cling, and it will forever be yucky!
At least with the example above with your home bathroom toilet, you can finally flush it down. What do you see now? Right! A really nasty looking toilet! Does it smell pretty now? Nope! Not at all. The same thing is going on in your holding tank.
Remember, your tank is only a holding tank. The only difference between the toilet bowl in your house and the tank in your trailer, is you can close off the tank in your trailer so you can't see it. So, why not just shut the lid on the toilet in your house? How long do you think THAT would fly with the MRS!
Clean it out!
WRONG!
I agree that comment was wrong.

RE: Cracked china bowl in Sealand toilet
The Sealand ain't cheap and we don't PLOP either!! :B Not aware of any plop resistant ratings for any of these devices.
LOL.
RE: Cracked china bowl in Sealand toilet
Not to seem abrasive, but are you or DW "ploppers". I'll explain. Instead of easing onto the couch (and I assume the potty), a person can fall onto it. A plopper can fall from any bending height so you could have a 1" plopper or an 8" plopper. The larger the plopping distance--and of course weight, but we won't go there--the better your odds of causing stress cracks. I believe the instructions have a recommended nominal plopping distance of 1/2" on your cheaper models, but I could be wrong and it may vary based on manufacturer some.
It's like "loud-walkers", "ploppers" are everywhere. And, don't get me started on those dang loud-walkers. Anyway, sometimes, when we have company, I'll notice a plopper and have to politely ask, "Would you mind minimizing your plopping please. We've recently bought this nice furniture. I get a strange look most of the time, but it makes sense, right? It's disrespectful if you ask me. I mean, I don't plop on other's stuff. Isn't it fair to expect the same? Wife wouldn't let me ask them not to plop on the toilet and a cam is definitely out of the question. All I want to do is get to the root cause and save myself some money and pain, but end having to cringe until they're done.
I usually do all of my own work. About a year ago, my SIL comes out of the bathroom all frantic and tells me there's a leak in the toilet. I run in there to check it out and to turn off the water. If you don't know, water damage is your worst nightmare. Well, sure enough, I see a crack with water seeping through. I yell at her as I was turning off the faucet, "Did you plop on the toilet too!" My DW hit me on back. I just asked them to both please leave. Like Balvert says, this******(no pun intended) is expensive and I was just getting red-faced with anger. Cause you know she plopped, right. Anyway, to make a long story short, I changed the toilet out and went with a plop-resistant model. I meant to contact my home builder and asked them why they go with such crappy models. I think I'll do that tomorrow.
True story.
RE: Shower Door Glass Broken
How old are your kids? :) Anyway, glass companies routinely come out for a nominal charge and can do amazing things. Call one up and let them tell you as an expert if they can fix it. They should know to use tempered glass I would think.
RE: wd-40 as bug cleaner and beyond?
WD-40 will do nothing to remove bugs, it works great for road tar. I have found Simple Green to be the best at removing bugs. I have yet to find anything that prevents bugs from sticking other than leaving it parked in the yard.
X2. Simple Green easy to do. No need to coat.
RE: Crossroads RV?
I don't have traveling experience with them, but looked at them. Seville is top of line for them. We liked the model with the fake rock fireplace. It's probably the favorite of the Seville's. I can tell you that it was our TOP pick if we were going to buy new. We looked for a long time for used, but nothing on that model. Now, how they hold up is another story. From what I'm hearing from Cruiser fans, they swear by them. Good luck.
RE: My Veteran's Day Message
Thank you very much. You are 100% correct. Thank them in person. It means a lot. We are not a faceless government body, we are one of you out there. If you approach a member in uniform and tell them, it will make their day! It reinforces what we do. Although I'm retired, I still serve as a civilian and I'm asking for them. They are spread so thin and often gone half of every year to all kinds of places. They are your American Warriors, they put their lives on the line every day, and I love them all for their sacrifices. Apologies, super-sappy about the cost of our freedoms.
