RE: Happi Jac transfer to a Super Duty.

Update and field report: I found a set of Torklifts on ebay, but the rears were the generic and I opted for the hitch mount ones. The install wasn't painless, but easy enough that I did it myself with patience and a piece of string to replace the 'fishing tool'. The rears (into the factory hitch) are literally a 5 minute job, including finding a wrench. I took the 'new' rig on an 'international' test run to New Brunswick the other weekend. The only constant was the camper, so it's not a fair comparison of the tiedowns..... but the Super Duty with Torklifts is so much better than the 'old style' Ford with HappiJac's I almost cannot believe it. Very, very pleased with the stability and overall performance of both the Torklift tiedowns and the truck. Thanks again for your advise and assistance.... A happy camper!

RE: 2 wheel drive and snow with a TC

The nice thing about 2 wd is that you are more cautious. Seems folks think with 4WD you can defy the laws of physics. (put you into a tree quicker) I have been using Bridgestone Blizzaks in the winter for years and they are awesome. On ice they are the best! I figure the cost is worth avoiding an 'indecent'. They used to be the only LT 'winter' tire available. Now if I can just figure a way to get them off the old Ford rims and onto the new Ford rims.... dang lug pattern!

RE: Urban Boondocking while working

That's awesome. I think urban boondocking sounds right, capt'n.

RE: Gas can carry

Probably no 'safe' or foolproof way to carry gas. I would think the concept would work well with diesel, water, etc. But I believe the Mil-spec ones could be dropped from a plane without rupturing.

RE: NY thruway

Seems like none of the EZPass websites say anything about trailers or rules about what is OK or not. They don't even have a search function and the one in RI has informative FAQs like 'If my wife dies can I still use my EZPass?' (seriously) but nothing about a trailer. I try to play by the rules and the only time I was hesitant was when someone was hauling a tractor for me on a gooseneck trailer. I left the EZpass at home and paid cash. There is a spot in NY or NJ below the Tappan Zee bridge where trucks only have to pay. I have never had a problem with a 2 axle trailer and would feel justified battling them if they complained because they don't spell out the rules, except NY will give you another pass if you haul a trailer. I think in general they don't really care one way or another. If you are worried about it you can always go through a manned toll booth with your ezpass and they will probably charge the right amount. But for me that just defeats the purpose and if they don't have the technology in place to charge based on axles then too bad. Also, at least for NY, the toll history goes back as long as I have had it and you can look at it online. I guess I could check if they charged for a trailer, but I am not going to.... it's just money under the bridge.

RE: NY thruway

Just remember.... the EZ Pass folks are 'related' to the ones 'running' the big banks and GM now. How do we think they could also run the health care system?? I have had very little contact with the folks at NY EZ Pass, I did ask them to send me some new strips and I got them. For a motor home and trailer I would think the best bet is to get the application, send it in along with the page (link) I posted. That page has pictures with the codes, so I am guessing they could get it right. But, I will say after shopping around a few years ago that they (NY Thruway) have the best 'deal' of any I found. As long as you have it tied to a credit card to replenish they will 'give' you up to 4 vehicles worth of passes. Everywhere else charges, usually around $25 for each pass. NY (and possibly MA) has an RV discount. (Thruway Motor Home Discount Plan**: Proof of motor home registration is required to receive the special motor home discount. Motor homes will receive the passenger vehicle rate based on the number of axles on the motor home. Plan Code: (MHM)) They just put it on the Newport/Pell bridge and they gave me two for free because I had them in another location. So now I have 4 of em. Not sure that the NY ones are worth keeping now. I will say it makes traveling out here in the land of toll roads much easier than it was in the past.

RE: NY thruway

If you have a standard NY account (where you prepay by credit card), they will give you another for the truck. Also they have some kind of discount for motor homes. And will give you one if you frequently haul a trailer. http://www.nysthruway.gov/ezpass/ta-w68176.pdf

RE: Happi Jac transfer to a Super Duty.

Thanks for the words of advise... I do like the looks of the Torklift's and I really hate the idea of slashing up another bedliner to mount the Happi's (I opted to leave it in on the 95, not the best idea, but it sure saved some time and aggravation.) I haven't even figured out how to get the one out of that Super Duty yet. I would add a bed mat to help keep it in place, regardless of what I do with the bed liner. Still on the fence about what to do. There is a used set of Torklifts a couple hours away on Craigslist. And I remembered I have the original 'bar' front mount that came with the camper. I sent the manufacturer (Stromberg Carlson) an email and they responded immediately with the installation instructions. I have a hard time justifying $500 to mount a 20 year old camper on 9 year old truck... Hey Sportsman Matt, my Sunline came from up in your neighborhood. Uxbridge. Small world!

Happi Jac transfer to a Super Duty.

I have had Happi-Jac tiedowns on my 95 F250, so I pulled the front plates and want to reinstall them on my 01 Super Duty. I know you need the brace for the rear 'buttons' but is it really necessary to get the newer ones for the front?? Being 'frugal' I used an old street sign post for the stiffner between the two plates in the front of the bed. When the camper is off I mounted a HiLift jack on it. Crude, but effective. Thanks!

RE: NY thruway

If you are traveling anywhere in the East an EZpass is well worth having. About the best deal is from NY, as long as you put it on a credit card ('reload' at $10) they will give you up to 4 (need a vehicle for each). I just went from east NY to Oh in a MH. It couldn't read the EZpass because of the overhang (works fine in my TC) but you just hand it to the toll collector and they punch it in. I have heard that different places have rules about trailers, but I have never gotten a notice when going through NY, MA, NH or ME with one behind the truck.
