RE: New to camping with a dog your advice?

We had a ID chip installed on our dog by the vet when we first got him. If lost the next vet or pound visit would know the real owner...They also now have GPS trackers (Smart phone or PC) to find your dog if he has wondered away. What a cutie, truly man's best friend....

RE: Question about driving with RV or travel trailer

Just did that in our 31'Class A From B.C on the Coho Ferry through Port Angeles,Portland,Boise,Pocotello,Idaho Falls Hywy 26 to Jackson,Yellowstone Hywy 20 to Cody Hywy 310 to Billings I-90 to Devils Tower Sundance The Black Hills Hywy 385 to Deadwood and Custer where we rented a car from the RV park we stayed at which included admission to Rushmore Crazy Horse and Custer State park. (The passes covered the car cost) We left the Black Hills by 385 to Hill City and Hywy 16 to Rapid City where we went east to Wall Drugs and north to Fort Abraham Lincoln where General Custer left from on his last expedition then back to Canada. The only time I had any concern was the downgrade from Yellowstone to Cody. Go slow and you will be fine...otherwise the total experience on the roads with the motorhome was great. The only issues was smoke from the forest fires 1st at Hood River,Oregon then Boise,Idaho and then at Jackson,Wyoming. Have a great trip.....If I can offer any additional info let me know...Mike

RE: Question in traveling Highway 16

I go to Edmonton from Vancouver and back often. Every time that I have asked if it is OK to stop for lunch in town they have always said yes. Just don't get caught in the backwoods of the park camping. They also don't allow camping on the streets overnight in the Park permit or not...The best thing to do is ask the ranger at the gate....Have fun....Mike

RE: Miles per day/hours on the road

"I am looking for your real life experiences."
Why ask the question if you don't like the answers...You asked for it take it as it is. We didn't say you couldn't drive more, the truckers sure do....But that is a job and even they have rules for driving times.

RE: Miles per day/hours on the road

You are being very optomistic. I plan 50 mph average and it usually works out and about 5 travelling hrs per day.Your total trip seems to be about 4000 miles so about 80 hrs driving or 16 days...You need to plan on a few days layover for the days when your family wants to stay put...Don't drive when you are too tired. The consequences arn't worth it...Have a great trip and remember this is an adventure not a race to the finish line.....Mike

RE: Stopping on Long Distance Travel

True story! I was traveling south on 101 trying to get to Santa Barbara before nightfall. When I realized I wasn't going to make it. I started looking for a safe place to stop for the night. I spotted what looked like a caravan of rvers on a side road beside the beach below the hyway. Thinking I would just pull in behind them and stay the night. There was a very wide shoulder with a three foot rockwall beside us when we parked. As night came I noticed the BBQs firepits and camp chairs coming out. Awesome. Was awakened in the early morning by a knock on the door. Looking out I saw a park Ranger so opened the door. He asked if I had been there all night. Yes I said. He says that will be $18. Apparenly I was parked in Carpenteria State Park in Calif. along with all the rest....Now that is what makes memories.

RE: winter rv'ing on Vancouver Island ??

There are many who winter on the Island as we have mild winters and as mentioned there are years when we get little snow and few days with freezing temps. There are the odd years when you would think we drifted up to Alaska. You should be prepared to winterize your unit for those times. The norm is for mild temps gray days and rain...Which is why Islanders become "Snowbirds" Pick a town or a city and you will be able to find a spot. One of our favorites is Parksands Rv park in Parksville along with many others on the Island.......Mike

RE: What not to Miss After Wall and the Badlands

Well here we are at The lions campground in Devon Alberta. A pretty little spot on the river.(It'll be our little secret) Wish I had known about this spot before now. Booked a week so we can visit my son and his family. We also have grandkids that moved here a few years ago.Good to see them again. Then it will be back to the Island to dream of the next awesome adventure...Mike

RE: What not to Miss After Wall and the Badlands

Actually we kinda had fun at Wall and the Drug store. You have to take it at face value. I even found a metal art wall hanging I couldn't live without..We ended up staying two nights. Sadly the Wounded Knee Museum wasn't open due to the building having a structure fire. Probably electrical. I know some say it's not worth it but this is a terrible thing for them. I hope they didn't lose anything irreplaceable. We drove there along route 44 a nice drive through the National grasslands and part of the Badlands. We were at Fort Aberaham Lincoln last night and I had a tour of the Generals house today. They picked an awesome spot to build a fort. The history of the place was well worth the visit. We are now in Minot North Dakota.Thinking of detouring through the International Peace Gardens on the way home. Has anyone been there......As a side note I must say the areas we traveled through were impressive but as always, not as much as the people we have met. Hope to be back soon....Mike

RE: Rv Park in Jackson Wyoming

We tried Virginian in Jackson but the whole town was full. Went to Gros Ventre 10 miles north. It's a big park with spaced out sites. Mostly no services. We paid $22.50.There are about a dozen hook-up sites also......We would do it again....Mike
