RE: Tire side wall cracks?

Oh good-eeee, Michelin is building a 1.5 Billion dollar factory in China.
High performance tires to be built in China.
High performance tires to be built in China??????? What the.....???? :h
That's like saying you have a great 5.7 diesel. :S
Or you have a super fast high performance Yugo. :R
There are already major companies whose names you would recognize that are building products in China for export. These factories export quality product the same as products produced elsewhere by these companies. They follow the EXACT SAME QUALITY CONTROLS already put in place elsewhere in the world.
I know there are those on this forum who would find this hard to believe.

RE: How to check for previous "tuner" on a used truck?

Most but not all tuners leave a footprint even after being uninstalled. This is true for both gas and diesel motors.

RE: Getting started....tow vehicle recommendations....PLEASE!

trailer sway is mostly caused by too much weight behind the trailer axles .
heavy tongue weight will eliminate sway .
payload capacity of the tow vehicle will determine how much tongue weight you can have .
so , the comfortable riding suv probably will be limited in payload .
what seems to work the best are crew cab and extracab pickups , especially an f250 , gmc hd2500 , and ram 2500.
you can load them up with gear and carry a 15 % tongue weight .
plus the brakes on an hd2500 , f250 , or 2500 ram are humonguous compared to an f150 .
go to the tire shop and compare the brakes on an hd 2500 to the brakes on an f150 .
it is very obvious in a side by side comparison .
F250 or similar is way overkill for a 23 foot trailer. Period.

RE: Towing Speed - Am I Going Too Slow?!

I always run 60mph in the right hand lane in any state I am in. BUT, I see travel trailers passing me doing in excess of 65mph. I figure they all must be running LT tires and are not the ones who come on this forum complaining about blowing ST tires because they never speed!
NOPE NOT HERE! Not on this forum.....

An Expedition will tow that trailer fine. I would also look at the Nissan Armada, that thing has a real powerful motor.

RE: The dreaded bedroom slide crack

I have noticed this on many lippert framed fifthwheels. I also have noticed some new lippert framed fifthwheel with a control crack cut and a T-shaped molding installed this can be done for your problem. If it doesn't have a big problem that isn't known of course and my guess is you might not. The corner is a weak spot. If you notice when concrete is poured around an existing concrete slab the sharp corner will crack the new concrete and rebar is added to maybe stop it from the stress of the old corner. Enjoy your fifth and let us know the fix.
chevman
Have you noticed this on other frame manufacturers? There are more Lippert frames out there than others.

RE: Questions for "half-timers"

My wife and I had planned what we called our "trip of a lifetime" and have been traveling in our 29 foot travel trailer for 6 1/2 months. We are currently finishing our trip and heading west back to Utah.
Please don't misunderstand what I will tell you-we have had a great time and have seen almost everything we have wanted to see. I think between this trip and previous travel we are still about 5 or so states short.
After this trip we feel that fulltiming would not be for us. Some campgrounds are great...some are not so great. We were in a park where a spouse had to go into the hospital for a knee replacement. Their beautiful class A had three steps just to get in to it. After dealing with this situation in our family, he is in for a rough go of it just to get in to the RV.
It's great to have a home to go back to, and a appreciating asset and not a depreciating one.
I know there are those that feel differently and you will probably hear from them as well.
Good luck on whatever you decide.

RE: Help Shopping: Half ton

Looks like this might be a thread that ends as a dud... I made calls to insurance and the property tax office to make sure I wasn't jumping into any surprises. Insurance was no big difference. However, property tax is insane in South Carolina. I knew this, but didn't expect anything like what she quoted. She said it will be right at $1k/year for the truck I'm looking at. It stays there for 3 years, then gradually comes down. But it will still be over $500/year for the first 10 years!
As a matter of principal, I will not pay that much in property taxes for a vehicle.
So, I went out and washed and waxed my trusty steed. She's gonna have to be our workhorse for awhile longer. I'm very disappointed. But this forces us to make due, and that ain't all bad. We'll be screaming in 2nd gear up the Rockies, but we'll have pocket money to do all we care to. :)
Having just relocated from Southern California a year ago, I will share what it is like for vehicle fees there. I purchased my Silverado new in 2011. The total "registration" fees were $635.00. You pay a base fee on the purchase amount, and then trucks get a special "weight fee" and then in California all trucks must be registered as "commercial vehicles" regardless of what (use) they were purchased for. These fees go down a little bit each year.
So - your "property tax fees are not that much higher, especially if those are your total fees each year. But the cheapest option is to keep the truck you have.

RE: Lichtsinn RV, No Discount!

wnytaxman & executive: Thanks for your posts since it has made me look at my spreadsheet and see if I was missing anything. The first column is price of new rv, second is trade-in value and third is difference of 1 and 2. I think we are all saying the same thing that the price difference is the key. Love this forum since it makes you think about what you are doing and make sure you are doing it properly. Thanks for all your help.
rr2254545: I was not kicking the tires. There was a very long phone call with Lichtsinn including lots of personal and financial data from me and they knew I was serious and close to making a purchase.
I wouldn't give anyone financial data unless I had a closed deal. I hope you didn't give them your social security number. I have purchased 32 cars in my life-I tell them I am well qualified or I wouldn't be here talking to them. And if they don't want to deal I will walk up the street to someone who does.

RE: Help Shopping: Half ton

That was payload for the specific truck. Good advice to get it equipped how I need it. We do keep vehicles a long time and I have a tendency to go cheap and then regret it.
I went back and test drove an Eco today. Was a little disappointed that the transmission felt like it was trying to keep me out of the power. I hope that would change with tow mode and max towing rear end. Any comment on that? Also drove the 5.0 and felt the same. Got to say, Ecoboost didn't feel like the freight train many describe. I didn't sense the torque like I expected...maybe it doesn't present itself without a load.
Don't get me wrong, it pulled hard when floored, but I expected 2000rpm to be all I needed for rolling hills unloaded. It wasn't, I had to press on the peddle some.
Maybe I just don't have the experience to have an opinion.
The Ecooboost engine and trans need around 1000 miles before towing. I was headed down the road with trailer on first trip when sometime after the odometer rolled over 1200 miles it seemed to "wake up". I have read that they have the computer "lock out" max boost until it reaches a certain mileage. Others have noticed it sooner and some a little later.
That's a great way to sell trucks...not have it perform like it should when you test drive it.....

RE: Help Shopping: Half ton

To the OP-
A half-ton truck is ideal for the size trailer (5,500) pounds you are looking at. The Silverado with the 5.3 is a great daily driver and will deliver 20mpg solo highway.
YOU DON'T NEED A 3/4 TON-YOU DON'T NEED A ONE TON.
I am currently on my way home from a trip across the U.S. with my 5,500 pound ( 29 feet)travel trailer and my 2011 Silverado w/the 5.3.
Up to this point the truck has performed flawlessly.
I have towed my trailer 6,000 miles thus far. I have put more than double that on the truck doing sight seeing.
So much for the "you need a dually" crowd to tow a pop-up.
So-it can be done.

RE: V8 4Runner + 19 foot TT (Four Winds Breeze) towable??

I've got a 2006 Toyota 4Runner Sport V8. The manual says towing capacity is 7000lbs and a 700lb hitch weight. I would be using an Equilizer hitch and a Prodigy brake controller.
I just checked out a Four Winds Breeze 191RD that looks amazing. The unloaded vehicle weight is ~3900lbs and the GVCW is 7000. Tanks full and carrying all my stuff I never expect to be above 4600-4800 pounds total. The trailer is 19 feet and about 22.5 bumper to hitch.
On the 4Runner forums I see people towing 23+ foot trailers but it seems uncommon. Is this 19 foot doable with a proper weight distributing hitch and brake controller or do I need to look at something smaller?
Thanks.
(PS - Anyone have any experience or thoughts on the Four Winds Breeze? It's a 2011 and looks mint.)
As someone who has pulled a 25 foot trailer with your same vehicle-you will have no problems! Have fun!
I am waiting for guys to tell you need a 3/4ton truck! LOL!

RE: Possible Purchase-Opinions Please

Done deal or not - that is too much trailer for that truck! Should have been looking at Ultra Lights.
I have a 29 foot travel trailer at 29 feet at 4,500 pounds dry. Filon/Aluminum construction.
Not as well built as yours but well within my 1/2tons specs.

RE: Travel with guns

Glad to help!
You can also ask them if they have a responsibility to protect their families and when they say yes, just ask them what tools they plan to use if a bad guy has a weapon. Most folks who don't carry say they'll just call the cops and wait. So ask them to look up what the LEO response times are for the areas they're commonly in. In many urban areas, they'll have about 5-7 minutes of praying the bad guy has a conscience...and 45 minutes or more in rural areas. And then look up how long violent crimes usually take from start to finish. Aside from rape, most are over well before 5-7 minutes.
IMO, leaving my family's safety in the hands of a bad guy is shirking my responsibility to them. There's nothing evolved about that. Failing to plan is planning to fail, and in a game where the first failure could be your last chance, the stakes are too high for me to take that risk.
And being in the RV doesn't change that, so I look for ways to ensure I can legally protect my family when I travel. Usually that's as simple as...
- Knowing whether the states have reciprocity with my CCW permit, and any differences in laws
- Knowing whether the state has a Castle Doctrine, and if so, whether that extends to vehicles
-- Even when it doesn't extend to standard vehicles, sometimes it extends to RVs (and even tents). This is when some laws can get complicated...as in the firearm can't be in the cab, or loaded while the vehicle is in motion, etc. This usually only matters when there's no reciprocity...otherwise, I'm legal to carry anyway.
- Knowing whether the state is Duty-to-Retreat
I also carry the lockbox in case I want to have a beer. :) Don't need a gun on me with alcohol in my system!
The first few are pretty easy...it's the RV specific ones that are sometimes a little harder to find, and sometimes open to a little more interpretation.
As I said, if all goes well I'll never need to find out exactly how those laws apply! :)
You can spin it any way that suits you fancy. My bottom line is I have traveled thru over half of the USA in the past 6 1/2 months and have NEVER needed a firearm, or NEVER NEEDED to call the police. The way some RVers talk about carrying makes one think there is a bad guy in every RV campground, rest area, gas station or truckstop looking to rob you of your possessions or harm your wife.
And I haven't run in to one of them. TOTAL TRIP-16,000 miles thus far. Includes both towing and non-towing miles.

Whatever carrier you switch to will have inferior service - no doubt.

RE: Very major and costly recall for Chrysler pending

jody h,
Once again, GM like Ford voluntarily recalled and fix the issues with out a fight. Did NOT say NO! Chrysler did say NO and is fighting the recall that has killed more than the 55 humans so far!
A ticking time bomb and you are driving it! That's simply Chrysler saying, screw you owners of the vehicles we designed and manufactured. Should you burn up, it's your problem as we won't help you prevent it's happening in the vehicle made and marketed by us, Chrysler Corp!
Comforting, isn't it?
Ford-PLEASE GOOGLE Ford Pinto! They decided it was cheaper to pay judgements than fix the cars. People were badly burned and/or killed!

RE: TT tire upgrade, should I go with Loadstar

The Maxxis tires seem to be doing ok here. I had Carlyle's before these with poor results. Both brands were load range E tires. Now as for what I really recommend, that would be the TPMS of your choice. Now if something goes bad like low tire pressure or overheating you get a warning before serious damage occurs. JMO.
Again and again and again-Carlisle has a new tire. It's not the tire you had before. They have a new nylon cap to deal with higher heat.
I have them (the new Radial Trail RH)on my trailer and they are doing great.
