RE: Shopping Jayco Jayfeather Hybrid -Thoughts?

If it's a 19H it doesn't have the U dinette. We had one for a number of years. Loved it. Ours was an 05. We upgraded to our current 232 when the kids got bigger. We usually used the couch when we ate too. Just extra seating. How many are you camping with? As a previous owner, I'd recommend the trailer.

RE: 2013 Wisconsin Spring RV Net Rally, May 10th-12th

Sounds like you should have a decent weekend. Little cooler, but nothing like the snow we had at the fall rally once. Enjoy! Hopefully I can get my work schedule squared up and get back with the group, one of these days!

RE: TV Advice

Stoutcoach - you may find the same thing I did with the old body style Explorer going with a Durnango or Jeep - both same platform currently. I had plenty of tow capacity, but not enough vehicle. Even with dual cam sway control, a 25 to 27 foot trailer can be quite a handfull in a stiff cross wind. You may find more room in a Crew Cab pick up than you think. We've been tickled with all the space in our 11 Super Crew. If you want to stay SUV though, the new Expeditions can be equipped with an intergrated brake controller and have proven their salt with more than one of our friends. Might warrant a look.

RE: Warm enough?

I can carry a 5000lb dry weight trailer. Hi Julie - help us out. You said you have a 1500 Suburban. What motor? What year? You said 5K# dry weight. What do you base that on? I usually look at the gross weight of the trailer and then figure backwards from there. DF points out I always think a little backwards ;-). What do you have for TV specs, that might help. Thanks! Steve

RE: Warm enough?

Car Guy, that 232 is REALLY nice. If I had a bigger TV I might even consider trading my 17Z in for that model! Jayco doesn't build the 232 anymore. They have added a similar floor plan (I can't remember the number) but with a slide out dinette. The hard time I have with it is by adding the slide out, they eliminated a wonderful floor to ceiling Wardrope AND pantry cabinets. For a gain of what, maybe 18" of floor between the dinette and the sofa? And the gain of hitch weight from the slide out ahead of the axles? I did pull the 232 with V-8 Explorer, and it pulled ok, although in stiff cross winds it was a little like the tail wagging the dog. I would definely reccommend the trailer though for nice layout, low step in height (no slide) and roominess.

RE: What are your fun family activites while camping?

We didn't start camping til we were older. Folks are retired farmers. We have gotten the entire family together once a year, every year for the last 13 years. Alot of our activities revolve around eating and then working it off... ;-) Annual events include a nature hike/canoe ride hosted by my sister. Kayak/canoe tag on the lake in front of our sites. If you can picture 8 to 12 canoes and kayaks chasing each other. We actually draw a cheering crowd from across the lake. I usually come up with huge grill/deep fried hors' doerves spread before dinner. Ladder ball and then round out the evening with guitar and Mom's 'button box' Concertina singing songs around the fire. Lots of remisching and story telling too.

RE: Warm enough?

Hi Julie- You sound like you're exactly where I am - with a few years experience (my side). I've camped with tent, Popup, and 2 hybrids - I am considering a travel trailer. We only did a tent 1 year. Mostly space and comfort. The pop up only had an 8 foot box, it was damp on cold mornings and did need dryout. It was small enough that I could dry it out in my garage. DXW decided as the kids got older (as did she) she didn't feel like running to the pit toilet and having to go outside just to turn around. Hence I discovered my first hybrid - a Jayco 19H. 2 bunks and a couch/bed. This was fine until the son was 6 inches longer that the couch. I did find that using tent covers (space blankets) and refletix helped keep it warmer. We grew into our current 3 bunk hybrid about 4 years ago. I have continued to use space blanket/tent covers and reflectix for both warm weather and cold weather camping and added one little twist. As with most hybrids, the cold air intake for the furnace is in the center of the trailer. The warm air registers are close to the outside walls. I took flexible dryer tubing (about $3 at Ace hardware) attached it to the warm outlets and funneled the heated air to the outside of the tent ends. I then use a small ceramic heater in the center of the trailer. The combination of the heater and the furnace allow me to keep the trailer between 69 and 72 degrees from one end to the other. This has worked in outside temps down to 10 degrees with 20+mph winds. Use ceiling mounted fans to move the air around in the tent ends and I've pretty much eliminated any condensation inside the tents. Along with that, having the tent covers, unless it is a deluge downpour, the tent ends have stayed dry and thereby don't need to be reopened to dry out on the return home. My current Jayco 232 comfortably sleeps 6 or 7 and has slept 10 in a pinch. You mentioned towing. With a gross weight of about 5,000# this trailer, 25 feet long when closed, is easy to tow with a regular 1/2 ton vehicle. When you open all three tent ends you're over 33 feet long and 12+feet wide in some places, all without the added weight of a slide out. Feel free to PM if you want more information. Value, space, towability and flexibility I've found it pretty hard to beat my hybrid.

RE: Peeking into this forum... Don't tell anyone...

Are your kids getting older or will they be sleeping on the dinette and couch? Going from 3 dedicated beds to 1 might be difficult. The Jayco looks like a great unit and having one currently you know they make a quality one. Somehow we still keep busy during setup. Not having to make the beds definitely saved us time but we're still spending it somewhere. It's probably just something we're doing... all the kid stuff kills us I think lol. It's entirely possible to pull in, unhitch, push the button for the stab jacks, push the button for the slide, push the button for the awning and be ready. Yes, kids are leaving the nest. DD will be starting college in the fall and is doing ALOT more with BF. He doesn't come from a 'camper' family. DS will be only part time in about a year. I can see keeping busy during set up. Her arguement is we can leave when I get home from work, drive park the camper and be in bed in less than 30 minutes if it gets late. Less labor intensive set up.

RE: Peeking into this forum... Don't tell anyone...

Interesting about the set up time. DW seems to think set up will be much faster with the hardside. Of course when I do set up I'm putting tent covers on all 3 bunks and then there is the making of 3 beds everytime. So I may be more involved then some. You are right about missing the birds in the morning. I feel like I'll miss the fresh air in the morning, since there is only one window that opens in the bedroom and they don't put vents over the bed anymore. We have camped down to 15 degrees, tent covers and refletix work really well. Just seems like the next logical step though. Anyone had experience yet with the 27DSRL? Thank you!

Peeking into this forum... Don't tell anyone...

Hi all- Just peeking in here. I've been over on the Hybrid board for years. Just starting to dabble in the hardside trailer idea. I know a there was posting about a year ago on a Jayco White Hawk 27 DSRL. I've been seriously considering it and wanted some feedback from folks who've camped with it for a season. What should be my concerns coming over from an expandable to a hardside travel trailer - I know, besides a whole lot less set up... ;-) Thanks in advance for the words of wisdom! Steve

RE: Road Trip / Where have you been this summer!

All these cool weather spots sounds great. We've spent the whole summer 2 hrs from home in some great Florida State parks. But just darn HOT. Looking forward to a cool trip in the fall. Come on north! Wisconsin was in the 90's most of July, I'd expect we'll get snow here in the next week or two... ;) We hit the ground in June coming east, Hershey, Lancaster, D.C. up to Livonia MI and back to Wisconsin, otherwise just a couple local weekends. Too busy, and I agree, too hot!
