RE: Albany NY to florida

If you want to go from Albany south, I would take I-87 south from Albany to I-287 South at the NY/NJ line. I-287 to I-78 West, I-78 west to I-81, then I-81 south. In this way you avoid the over-the-mountain portion of I-81 in central PA, which is under perpetual reconstruction. This also takes you around the busy traffic, etc. in the NJ/Delaware/Baltimore/DC corridor. Your best choices to cut-over from I-81 to I-95 would be either I-64 into Richmond, or I-77 and I-26 north of Charleston. X2

RE: New truck, new hitch, old trailer, new problem

oh and stupid question but you never know.... Do you have the right size ball in the B&W turnover setup?

RE: New truck, new hitch, old trailer, new problem

Quick question. Do you feel the bouncing in the front or rear of the truck. If its in the front its because the pin location is too far back (behind the rear axle). If its in the rear most causes are from a light pin weight or a rear weighted 5er.

RE: Mileage- Class C vs. 5th

I get between 8.5 and 9.5 mpg with the below sig setup. I don't tow 55mph though. Most of my trips are short weekenders or 4 night shots. I just want to get there. Being that said I usually tow 72mph. I'm sure if I slowed down I would get closer to the 10/11mpg range but I can't see much more then that. Another thing that will change mpg is the profile of the 5er. My setup is 13'5" so basically pulling a large billboard behind me. Most 5ers over 30' fit into this category. Good luck in choosing what works best for you and don't sweat 1-2mpg. Just enjoy the ride!

RE: Slideout pump

Any hydraulic supply store should carry them. Just bring the oring and tank and they can size one up.

RE: Emergency exit window in bedroom of 2001 Cameo 5th wheel

Same thing here. I am planning on doing something about it next spring since I dry camp frequently. My idea is to install a spring loaded clip like the ones for the basement doors on one side of the window wall. this will hold the window up. Then just frame out a small box shaped like the window opening out of OSB and then staple screen material to it. Pretty easy, just have to remember to remove the screen and latch the window b4 leaving. Then just store the screen insert in the closet until the next time I need to use it. PS: use cardboard to make a template of the hole then trace to the OSB. Cheap and simple! Good Luck, Sean

RE: 1 Ton SRW conversion to DRW

Ditto smkettner. Not worth the time and hassle. X3!!! Also Remember that adding tires, axles, spacers, blah blah blah will not change your GVWR. Legally you wont be able to carry more weight. Best thing would be to get a dually not make one. Leave that up to the manufacturers. Good Luck though, Sean

RE: Car wash with 5th wheel hitch

Not to be a buzz kill but running your greasy hitch through an automatic car wash is just rude and VERY inconsiderate for the next person in that will get a greasy mess all over their vehicle. If that ever happened to me I would kill someone... On another note... Just replace the grease if it ever comes off. Not a big deal. The hitch doesn't become damaged by loosing a little grease.

RE: prodigy maxed out and won't stop 5er

I have a prodigy and had same problem. Answer was grease on the magnet/ drum surface. Grease on pad will usually cause brakes to lock up. My inner seals went bad and dropped grease on the magnet face. When applying the brakes fully with the manual slide bar the trailer wouldn't even hold my truck back at an idle. We had to remove all drums and clean the magnets/drums. It could be a bad wire but my guess is a greasy magnet... Good Luck! Sean

RE: Leveling and Jacking Up. Question

Tip: Don't bring your slides up until all jacks/stabs are down and tight. Otherwise the slide will cause the trailer to lean when they are extended without the rear stabs down.

RE: Diesel owners please reply

GM/Chevy will have the better ride being independent front suspension. But a truck is a truck, you can't expect anything more. I had my CTD for last years winter here in upstate NY and NEVER plugged it in. Had temps as low as -11F and it started right up after allowing the 12V intake heater to cycle.

RE: fuel problems on 2006 3500 dodge quad 4X4 short bed

...white smoke always except hard hills then black as over fueling... Herein lies the key. If you are indeed seeing white smoke there is a fueling/combustion issue. Please, please, please confirm the crankcase oil level is not increasing. Fouled injector/s are a major issue not to be trifled with. This is a problem the fleet at my job has been encountering ever since the low sulfur diesel rolled out. Basically the fuel eats at the injector/injector pump seals and the crank case oil can go into the saddle tank or diesel can enter the crank case. In all of our affected trucks the motor oil would be forced into the saddle tank emptying the motor of most of it oil before the motor would shut down. 17 quarts later the engine would be filled back up but it would blow a nice white smoke out the exhaust kind of like a blow turbo would. I suggest go to a real Cummins dealer. They can work with your existing warranty/Cummins warranty. Good Luck Sean

RE: Some good advice

Going to a Dually I would agree with also. But as far as a 3500 single rear wheel there really isn't much of a difference other then the helper springs from the factory and the shiny 3500 badge on the door. That can be made up by airbags/ Timbrens. Again I would still suggest a Dually but he already has his truck so....

RE: Fifth Wheel Cover..... Who Does it?

No cover.... They are a pain to get on/off and tear after a couple years of use. I park it as is in my yard where no leaves/debris can build up on it. As for snow, the dealerships don't do anything and they have some used units older than mine.... Good Luck Sean

RE: 5th Wheel Hitch Mirror

Just angle your rear view mirror so you can see your hitch in the bed. Then just watch the pin with the hitch in the mirror as you back up. Works for me every time. And that was included in the price of the truck!!!

RE: Using 5er while attached to tow vehicle

Few things here: 1 - I do it often. 2 - I never drop my landing gear if I stay hooked up so I don't forget to raise it in the am... Brain farts frequently...;) 3 - If you do remain hooked up for the night ALWAYS recheck your 5th wheel connection/pins. Especially when in public parking lots. (someone may have played a cruel prank and removed one/all of the pins. Also I have stayed overnight not dropped gear and still put out my slides. It doesn't hurt a thing for just one night. Just remember not to open your slides where another vehicle could hit them. Good Luck and enjoy your 5er! Sean

RE: What will it tow

My friend tows a 30ft Chapperal with his 06 f250 5.4L and he hates it. Turd on the straights with a head wind not even counting the hills. Better start looking for a more qualified motor. Good Luck
