GAWR

I know what the GAWR is but have a question about what's included in it, specifically the rear, since that's where the trailer is. My truck has a GAWR (RR) of ~5000 pounds. I was wondering what was "included" in that. For instance, is it like the GVWR where the full tank of gas + the 150# driver is included but nothing else? Looking at getting a new truck and want to be sure the new axle is okay for the TT.

RE: brakes and bearings

Ok. Thanks.
Another question - I've read that the bearings need to be repacked every 6 months. Is that right or is it a different length of time?

brakes and bearings

I was curious if anyone could give me advice on how to tell if I need new brakes on my trailer and if my bearings should be repacked or not. I got it used in the fall of 2011 and haven't done anything with either before.
Also, should I do these things myself or take it somewhere to get it done?

towing capacity brain freeze

It's been a while since I did research on what my truck can tow safely, etc. I'm looking to get a different truck and wanted to be sure I remembered how to figure if it could safely pull our TT. It probably won't be a problem since it's just a newer model of what I have now.
But...can someone refresh my memory on how to figure weights/GVWR/etc., please? :o

sealing roof edges

As I was putting the cover on out TT for the winter I checked the seams around the edges of the roof, air conditioner, etc. to see if there were any problems. I noticed that the seams on the edges of the roof - where it meets the sides of the TT the sealant/rubber material (can't remember it's proper name, sorry) was coming up just a bit on the top of the roof. I am thinking that as a preventative measure I should replace this in the spring, but wanted to get feedback from the knowledgeable group here. I forgot to take pictures of it, sorry. :(
If I should replace it, what do I seal it with? I know everyone raves about the Entrabond (sp?) tape, but is that for the seams too or just around things like the AC unit, etc. that are on the top of the roof?
Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. BTW, this will be my first go at redoing this type of thing, so please feel free to be helpful as I'm a little nervous about doing it. :B

RE: Not having much fun

Hang on for a year or so. You'll get more comfortable with the driving and backing. Look for campsites that are pull-throughs....no backing.
Buy enough stuff to keep everything in the rig between trips. I unpack only dirty clothes and fridge food.
You'll eventually find campgrounds you enjoy. Go into the internet and look for state campgrounds, federal campgrounds, maybe even boondocking (takes more planning -- no water/electricty).
I wouldn't enjoy camping at GS campgrounds.....too many people.
x2 We have camped at primarily State parks thus far and are going to be at an RV park the next 2 times out. I like my space and from what I've seen/heard it seems as though that's not available at the RV Parks because they are private and have to pay taxes, etc. Therefore, they pack as many people/rigs as possible into the space.
Best advice I've seen/heard to get comfortable is 1) not to worry about the people behind you - they can go around, especially if on a highway and 2) find a vacant (or large, somewhat empty) parking lot and practice the backing up. DW is very uneasy about backing and hasn't done it yet, but then again I haven't taken her and the TT to a lot to practice. I'm sure she can learn, just as you can, but it does take practice and lots of patience. Just remember, we've all been there at some point in time.
Best of luck.

RE: Getting a new TT home

I don't really know much about delivering trailers, but have heard that there are places that do deliver. Are you looking at new or used? If new some places around here deliver to your house. Also, maybe a friend w/a TV that can pull it (or you can borrow to pull it)?
I don't know of any car rental company that rents trucks that have towing capablility - my in-laws are going to Nova Scotia later this year and were going to maybe take our TT but they didn't want to put that many miles on our TV and looked into renting one. They couldn't find a company (i.e. Hertz, Alamo, etc.) that rented trucks that had hitches (my theory is because they don't want you pulling anything with it in case you don't "know" what you're doing). Maybe UHaul trucks can pull it since they rent the trailers too?

RE: Buying used: what age, make model to look for? avoid?

I agree with Jared. We got ours (1st one) by finding it on Craigslist last fall. We were very naive and appears as though we got lucky and the TT doesn't have any leaks or anything. The guy we bought it from was real nice and helpful and gave us everything including the hitch. One thing I've learned on here though is that you need to be VERY WEARY of TTs that have leaks and that may be why some (but not all) people are selling them. So just be cautious. Ours is a '09 (30' with no slides) and we got it for $8700. Good luck.

RE: New Tires

Why not?? I had a blowout in Tucson AZ, went to Discount Tire and they mounted 2 new tires, 2 (correct) tire stems, and also checked all my truck tires and let me know that I didn't have the proper valve stem caps for TPMS stems and put them on for free. All trailer tires and truck tires adjusted for inflation exactly the way I asked them to. Couldn't be happier with them. You would be happy too.
I guess my concern is them raising/jacking up the trailer and bending the frame if they think that you can raise the trailer just like you could a car/truck. Do you think this is a valid concern?

RE: New Tires

Assuming that you purchase the tires from Discount Tire do you let them mount them on the trailer? I'm in the market in the next year or two for some new ones and didn't know if I should trust them to mount the tires on the trailer or not.

RE: Fresh Water fill

I forgot to put that while I can see the hose clamp I can't get it through the hole to reattach it to the plastic "plug" that the cap of the fill goes on. Sorry about that.

Fresh Water fill

You all have been so helpful with my learning and understanding our new TT, I greatly appreciate it. I now have another question.
The previous owner at some point when filling the FW tank unscrewed the white plastic part that goes from the outside of the TT to the fill hose attached to the tank. I noticed this the other day when taking off the cap and the whole unit came out. The hose has a clamp on it that I could loosen and re-tighten, but I can't get to it because it is behind where the city and fresh water connections are. I can see it but can't get to it. I was wondering if I needed to remove the panel that houses those two things and then re-caulk around it or what the best way to access this fill hose is. I don't remember for sure, but don't think I can access it from underneath.

RE: (Oh No!) Another Milestar Tire Thread - 3000 mile trip

I don't want to hijack the thread, but if you order Maxxis who do you have install them? Do you trust Discount Tire with installing them on the TT? I'm going to need some next year and was curious.
