ERA towing a Smart Fortwo FYI

Fri night at Rocky Knob CG, near Floyd, VA my neighbor had an 09 ERA (24 ft.) Tennessee plates with a ForTwo in tow on an aluminum carrier.
We spoke for a while and compared notes.
Regarding the rig: He has 100k on the odo, tours 3-5 months per year, replaced glow plugs twice, third set of tires, never used the awning, frig/freezer not working as well as earlier years, always leaves power sofa in bed position. Not aware of rv.net but he is now.
Bought the Fortwo last year because he got tired of using the ERA as an everyday drive.
In common: Love of touring, hit and run camping.
Not in common: He's single, early retired and without pets.

OP,
Forget the "10 yr. rule" with a Sprinter. More camping, less worrying.

RE: Sprinter for cold weather

Hey OP,
For seven seasons we have used the water system down to the low 20's overnight without incident. Daytime temps ranged from 40's to 60's during these adventures. Never camped below freezing for an extended period.
In all cases we kept the water heater fired and cabin temps in the low 60's.
No problems yet... knock on wood.
I won't try to pump out the gray or black tanks in the 20's.

Late spring, late NPS CG opening...

Over the past seven years I have always looked forward to dry camping in our B on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Upsetting to read the CG's are opening nearly a month later this year due to budget cuts.
Hope this doesn't affect your plans to visit your favorite NPS CG's this spring.
Bad enough that winter won't go away... Jay

RE: Sprinter Class B Lengths - and other ?? from a newbe

So here are my early questions.
Besides parking garages and low hanging branches - what are your regrets with a 10" clearance of a high top? NONE
I read a lot about a single parking spot. I am considering the Mercedes Sprinter long body coming in at 24'. Why would we be sorry?
NOTHING TO BE SORRY ABOUT.
If you have a Sportsmobile with the two back couches that make to 2 singles or a queen - can you get a bottom sheet on? Are the comfortable? - I do not want to pack toppers for sleeping comfort.
DON'T KNOW. WE HAVE A ROADTREK ADVENTUROUS.
I like the 110LB example on the Sportsmobile site because they designed 15" of storage in the back. I am thinking rods, tackle, grill, chairs, maybe a folding bike, thoughts? NOPE.
Does anyone have Thule type storage on top? NO.
I do not like having to use a shower curtain. That is another check in the custom Sportsmobile column. Our boat has a small "wet" head where we shower with a handheld with no curtain. The wood is teak with laminate walls and counter. The boat is an '85 so it has held up well. Has anyone designed a bath combo that does not need a shower curtain to protect it? WE HAVE A STOCK PURCHASE WITH AN ENCLOSED BATH BUT WE STILL NEED TO USE THE SHOWER CURTAIN.

RE: Old style vs new style interiors

Re: Fixed beds. We like them for a few reasons: Loose storage (put a few items tucked on the bed), we like haing the beds made up and ready to use, and most important to me with my bad back, I can get up during the night and hobble around without disturbing sleeping beauty.

RE: Sprinter based B's

To the OP,
You mentioned renting a condo? Careful. It wouldn't surprise me if you find many resort condos banning class B's or conversion vans from the premises.
Such is the case with our condo in Cherry Grove Bch, SC.
OTOH, a hi rise condo near us permits renters to bring B sized units.
I'm thinking they are hurting for income and are bending the rules.

RE: Sprinter based B's

"The question is, are the Sprinter based units too big for running around in town? NO. JUST ENTER DRIVEWAYS PERPENDICULAR (STRAIGHT ON) TO AVOID ROCKING.
It also seemed to have very low ground clearance, is this an issue on dirt roads and such? YES. IMO WASHBOARDED DIRT ROADS CAN BE HAZARDOUS.
How about the height? Do folks pull a toad with these?" WE DON'T, BUT SOME DO.

Stick with the mountain route. 100 more miles but no tolls and fewer hassles.
Prettier too.

RE: What made you decide on a "B" (long ramble)?

"For a while, I debated between a short C and a B... then realized that a short C isn't going to be able to be parked early in parallel spaces in a small town before their annual shindig, while a B fits right at home. I want to keep things simple, so I don't want to run around with a toad."
You say "I" and not "we", so a B seems fitting.

RE: Do You Ever Get Claustrophobic In Your B?

Late reading this thread.
If the OP is still looking for opinions, we DO get claustrophobic after 4-6 nights in the rig and go to motels. The Drury Inn & Suites is our favorite but it is a smallish chain and urban oriented.
We have a much easier time sleeping in the rig at the high elevation out West with it's lower humidity and cooler nights.
Off thread question: Any motel chains besides Drury and LaQuinta that are truly pet friendly?
