RE: "Little things to know" about 2500 series Suburbans/Yukons?

X2 (depending on budget)
I love mine but those 8.1's are a nasty beast of a motor.
I did a quick Craigslist search for Phoenix and found a 99 like mine with 88K miles for less than $6K. Very lows miles for a truck that old. Apparently all the old K2500's are out on the west coast!
Because they don't rust out west.... :)

RE: 2500HD w 8.1/Allison Opinions

Just feed her lots of gasoline and she'll run forever. 250K on my 02 and the tranny still shifts like it were new. Just put a new water pump on her at 250K. Did I mention that my 2002 has been supercharged since 5k miles? Love this truck.
Which charger did you install? What power/torque ratings before after did you see? Any mods to the engine along with the SG?

RE: 2500HD w 8.1/Allison Opinions

My only complaint is WTF who designed the oil pan to drain on the exhaust crossover tube.
You can easily and cheaply solve your problem with a Fumoto Valve and attached hose. These work very well for problems like yours.

Interesting....Not sure if there is enough room between the plug and the exhaust pipe. I can't get a sock and ratchet in there. Any idea of the depth of the valve?

Great tow beast, wold jump on it! Price is a bit high but if they know these are in demand and no longer produced...well. I'd say $14,500-$15,000 is more appropriate.

Unique depends on where you live. In Texas it might be unique if it didn't have the brush guard.:W

RE: CARB causing air pollution?

I work with CARB occasionally and Water Resources Board, both agencies are nothing more than tantamount to runaway agencies with power to disrupt the economy and prosperity of CA. They have self aggrandizing agendas that are self serving and are out of touch with modern day needs and survival of businesses. There is no accountability on their part and many I’ve worked with have never had to make money, nor worked for a business that made any money. Back in the industrial revolution unions were needed to protect the worker, just as those business (yes they are business and only look to make money no days) it’s time for certain things to move on and cease to exist. I’m all for clean air/water but at what point is the threshold of reality become overbearing and ruthless. Gov’t solves nothing just creates road blocks and inefficiencies.
Then how do you account for the turn around in air quality despite a four fold increase in popoulation and more cars than any where else in the country?
Carpool lanes.... There is a worthless concept. Gas cost increase means we are actually driving less, driving more efficient cars/trucks and efficiency is also having a positive affect on emissions.
Then add the businesses that have left or shut down and no new refineries have been built in decades. The unprecedented power they have been given..wow you want to give them accolades go ahead.

RE: New Truck Price

I would love a new TV, but if I had to spend all that $ on a TV I couldn't afford to put fuel in it or go anywhere. So glad my TV is paid for and I can save for the next one.
Don't need a new TV, the cost as what I have works perfectly. These prices are just insane and simply not worth anywhere near 60k. The unions are killing this industry with wages and legacy costs....

Love the innovation and thought that went into it....Ford should use it as hey look w/ an F350 can do....lol
I was worried about this at first but with FAE it drives like a dream.

RE: How far can you tow prior to fill up?

Well never really travel on flat ground but over the Sierra and back I get about 110 miles on a 26 gallon tank. Doesn't require a "Full" fill up but I couldn't make it back over.....love the power :)
I have poured gas from my generator to make it to a station before...lol

RE: My 8.1 is at 100,000. Time for plugs.

Was curious what those of you with an 8.1 run? And so you don't need to look at my sig, it is a 2002 8.1.
Do the plugs with the gold, silver, dodad electrodes work best? Are all the "bells and whistle" worth the money? Maybe one that could get me to 20 MPG.
And it looks as if they are very accessible for me to pop those out myself.
Recommendations please?
Thanks
No matter how you drive 20mpg out of a BB is never going to happen (well if you park it..lol, you can spend $$$ any get a 1 mpg or so better bug huge gains just isn't a reality. This engine loves fuel, imho save any enhancement costs for fuel.
Longevity wise I suggest leaving the TM there, I have a hard time keeping the tires from sliding as it is...lol

RE: Experience using Hypertech programmer with 8.1L Chev V8

There is a ton of potential locked away in the Chevy 8.1. With that being said, my 8.1 is a horse, don't think I'll ever consider altering it from stock.
However, if I were I'd look into EFI Live. EFI Live requires an experienced hand. A novice can unwittingly screw up their timing and fuel maps, and that would require a reset of the ECM.
I have considered turning off the torque management, and leave the timing and fuel maps alone. I have a 6sp manual, so the transmission is not a concern, slipping the clutch is, and dual disc units are available if that is an issue.
As far as injectors, some guys are tuning their trucks to run on E85 on the stock injectors without any repercussions.
They really could have advanced this engine so much further, but the sales were so dismal that it didn't make sense for GM to keep it.

RE: Experience using Hypertech programmer with 8.1L Chev V8

imho the torque management is there to protect and the longevity of the engine
I know you said IMHO, but Actually TM is there for the transmission & drivetrain (excluding engine), but in reality it's only there to prevent shock to the "system".
Best way to explain it is rolling up to a red light cruising to a stop, light turns green you hammer (literally) the gas, you feel drivetrain "slap" (for lack of a better term). It's that split second when every thing is changing from slowing to accelerating.
Well, I don't know many people that drive like that (unless you are racing) aside from a 16yo. Besides anyone who knows anything about driving/racing knows the smoother you are the better.
After talking to some local shops the best HP increase can be had from reworked heads, a more free flowing exhaust, FAE, cam replacement, larger injectors with improved air intake.
True sort of, best HP increase is from a supercharger. But I know what you mean.
When My exhaust system needs replacing I’ll probably grab some headers,
Be VERY careful which exhaust setup you go with, as the 8.1L (along with the 6.0L) needs backpressure, and you will actually loose some lowend torque.
Ya forgot to add supercharger or turbo for that matter...5k to increase some humm, would love to for craps and giggles but just can't justify the cost...not to say it wouldn't be sweet!
Ya the TM is there for the slap but also under stress when climbing with a load through the gears. I'm sure GM went overboard with the TM for warranty purposes but my truck needs to last for the long haul and while it'd be fun to remove it again just not worth the cost and repairs later....I'd be stopping on it I know myself. I've already burned out through the intersection w/ a 6k load....fun!
Correct about the back pressure, didn't state it but yes there is a certain amount needed.

RE: Experience using Hypertech programmer with 8.1L Chev V8

I use mine for towing exclusively, imho the torque management is there to protect and the longevity of the engine. After talking to some local shops the best HP increase can be had from reworked heads, a more free flowing exhaust, FAE, cam replacement, larger injectors with improved air intake. These begin to add up and really don’t provide the gains to justify the cost. I’m towing a 10-11k and stock pulls great, not in a race. When My exhaust system needs replacing I’ll probably grab some headers, until then I’ll enjoy the BB power and save my $$$ for gas. As someone else said you want to save mpg..parking and toss the keys cause it isn’t going to happen.

RE: Which Tire Takes The Most Punishment?

Of all four trailer tires both rears needed replacement at the same time. The tread was chewed pretty good from being scuffed in turns and what not.
If I blow a tire I replace all four tires and my leaf springs...just sayn' :)

RE: 8.1L MPG?

I agree you can get 7-8mpg on flat ground. I can get 13 empty going 60, but anything more and it drops to 11 easy with 4:10's. Towing I'll get ~7 on flat ground towing my 8k trailer, but as soon as I go up into the Sierras it goes down to 2mpg at times... Just the price to pay for having the power. Pass everything until you see a gas station...lol
