RE: Stranded in Utica, IL 1998 Four Winds alternator?

Hi jimdmorrison
I live south of Chicago, but camp regularly at Hickory Hollow Campground in Utica,
There is a place that does RV repairs in the next town over LaSalle Illinois
Illinois Valley Truck Repair
815-223-4464
I have seen them in the Campground making mobil repairs
Just for your FYI
Good Luck!

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

Are your airbags 'plumbed' separately? If not, do so. Will really help stop the rock n roll.
Thanx, Yes they are plumbed separate

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

Hey Mike
Appreciate the info,
I just got off the phone with Hellwig and it, the Helpers, Definitely will not work with my Air Bags...... so you were right,
He did say they make an air bag system that would allow for the Helpers to be installed, but that seems like an awful lot to go thru.....

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

I looked over the Instructions on their website again, but it doesn't mention the Install on something with Airbags.....
I think I will call Hellwig support and double check just to be sure,
They seemed VERY confident in saying the Airbags would not be in the way.
Still Scratchin' my Head??? lol

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

Dave n Holly, if you have air springs on the back, you will probably need to remove them to add the Hellwig helper springs. Do you have as much pressure in the air springs as they will take? The air springs serve the same purpose as the helper springs.
Mike
Hi mikebo
Yes, I have Ride Rite Firestone airbags on the rear, which I have Filled up, I was on the phone with a Hellwig Rep Today, and was wondering if the Air Bags would be in the way, but he told me they wouldn't...
I have 11 Stack leaf springs on the rear, I got under it today and it sure looks like the Airbags will be in the way if I try to put the LP-35 helpers on....
Not sure what to think now:h

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

I went to Quadra Manufacturing Bigfoot in White Pigeon Michigan last spring to have levelers installed. That shop does alot of Heavy Truck suspension upgrades and glider rail extensions for motorhome applications, so I may see if they would have any suggestions, the local places in my area are totally clueless when it comes to RV suspensions, and I Mean TOTALLY!
I may take your suggestion and call Hellwig, I was just on their website and they have a contact number, so I think I will give them a ring, I am sure they have applications for what I am trying to do,
Just have to find a shop for the Install.....
Thanx j-d!

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

I have never actually got a tape out and measured the difference, but the fact remains the rear of the unit is dragging at times and I have alot of Air in the rear air bags, soooooooo, I have to do some type of add on to raise the rear a bit, Again just not sure what the options are,
Guess I will check with some type of truck suspension shop in my Area.....

I am always aware of what I put in the rear basement and try to keep the weight as light as possible, Fresh, Black and Grey Tanks are all to the rear of the rear axle, with the fresh water tank back wall nearly at the rear bumper under the Bed. We camp alot at State Parks without water hooks and I tend to fill the tank at home, Thinking maybe I should fill at the State Park when I get there to save the weight and sag on the ride there, I was amazed at what the weight of that tank filled is....
At any rate, the Hitch bottom still drags when loaded, so I still believe a rear suspension upgrade is necessary to get the rear Lifted a bit, Just not sure of the Options.
I Appreciate all the Input Here! :)

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

Hey Jim,
Thanx for the Insight, Gives me some "food for thought" as I will definitely give that air adjust a try.
Mine is also 31 feet long, but I believe the sagging rear really needs to be addressed, and I am wondering what could be put on to raise the back end a bit?
Spring Helpers Perhaps?

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

How much air are you running in the front tires?
Jim
I keep them aired to Tire Spec, but tend to be on the lower side...
Not sure I follow you,
Would air pressure in the front tires make that big of a difference as to this Problem?

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

D'n'H, What's the wheelbase of that 32-ft C? From the picture, it seems the "house" is pretty much balanced on the rear axle. This can bring the rear axle load to/above GAWR, and contribute to poor handling by not letting at least 32% (Ford spec) ride on the front axle.
Wheelbase is 158
I really don't believe it is "Well Balanced" the front wheels have a "Float" about them when driving, as if the rear is loaded so much as it causes the front to rise and not really "Planted" on the ground if this makes sense to anyone....
The Overhang past the rear axle is substantial in my opinion, and has alot of weight with rear basement storage and all water and waste tanks.
I had a fellow RV'er at a CG take it for a ride once and he was in agreement with what I am Feeling when Driving.
Just wondering if I "beefed up" the Rear Springs and raised the rear a bit if that wouldn't help a bunch?
The Hitch has been known to drag on some pitched driveways,
and I might add,
The Pitch was not that Steep!!
I see alot of Members here with Chassis Expertise,
Would again, LOVE some insight! Thanx!!!

RE: New Bilstien/Helwig

Have a 2009 E-450 32 ft. Class C,Did the Bilsteins all around, plus front steering damper which made a great difference in driving, however even with the Firestone air bags in the rear aired, am finding the rear is really starting to sag even when it's not really loaded that heavy,
Not sure what upgrades to research, but I have to address this issue,
Any Thoughts Please?

Thx rvten.....I was also concerned with less chassis twist thats why I was always leveling first and then putting the slides out.

Slides in or out when Leveling?

I have just had Bigfoot Hydraulic Levelers installed recently on my Class C and it seems when I level with the slides in and then put them out it goes off a bit from level, maybe due to the weight of the slide perhaps :h
Does anyone put there slides out first and then Level??
Thoughts and Comments Appreciated!

RE: Big Foot Leveling Systems

Tried to post this before but must have goofed up.
To answer the question of the fix for over extending the levelers, the tech had me un plug the power cord from the "brains". In our case, the box is located under the drivers seat. We unplugged for a minute and plugged back in. System reset and I was able to re level in a new spot. Worked well.
Appreciate the info sask! Happy Trails!
