RE: Fuel Mileage

I found that running 91 octane in my 05 Ram when towing seemed to provide better power, a small difference, but a difference just the same. I never seen any improvement fuel mileage though. You'll never hear 'pinging' anymore with modern engine...they all incorporate a knock sensor which will retard the ignition timing to cure the pre-detontaion. Of course the engine is more likely to pre-detonate under the loads of towing. The retarded ignition timing also reduces the power so if you want maximum power, use 91 octane. I seem to recall that the recommended octane for the Hemi is 89. It will burn 87 no problem, just won't make max power. Dave

RE: Trusting the dealer

WHY would anyone trust the dealer? X2...usually trusting and dealer shouldn't exist in the same sentence. Dave

RE: Love my tuck bed fuel tank

The downside is the 500 pounds of payload capacity you've lost. For some, that would put them over their payload limit. Dave

RE: Jayco owner looking at a Crusader......Quality?????

You could ask this question on forest river forum... http://www.forestriverforums.com/forums/f210/. Lots of crusader owners there. The manufacturer, Prime Time, seenm to be very customer service oriented. Dave

RE: EQ hitch - 1,000 pound bars with 1,100 pound TW?

Don't think that you'd be breaking the W/D bars if they're too light. It'd be a case that they can't provide sufficient weight transfer or they'd cause a lot of bounce when towing. Dave

RE: EQ hitch - 1,000 pound bars with 1,100 pound TW?

I'd certainly try it and see if you the W/D you need. You can verify by measuring ride height of the TV before/after hitching or by weighing. Dave

RE: Law requiring WD?

That is correct. But they also use trucks that are suited for pulling without WD - such as an F450 or bigger What I saw mostly frequently on our recent 6 day of towing was typically 350/3500 duallies and they'd easily handle 1200+ lb tongue weights. Its the lack of sway control that would concern me! There may be no rule requiring W/D hitches while towing. However if you bumper's dragging and you're lighting up the trees, you may get pulled over and weighed. Dave

RE: Leaving our dog in the trailer...

A few years back on another forum, there was a sad story where a travel trailer caught fire because of a refrigerator malfunction, while unattended.....It didn't end well for the pet's that were inside. I don't do it...... Sam Yes, that's sad, but following your logic, you shouldn't leave them in the 'stick' home either. Dave

RE: Law requiring WD?

Anyone know for sure how camper delivery outfits deal with it? I believe that most don't use W/D hitch when delivering a new TT, but am not positive. Dave

RE: Chocks I can count on.

What's wrong with using rotochocks on both sides? Way better than wedges. Just have to ensure that you re-tighten them after the tires have cooled down to ambient temperature. Dave

RE: Admission Corner...

Got to the dump station and pulled the cap off to hook the hose. You know where this ones going don't you... About a cup or two of brown water drops out and splashes me. Don't know how that happened? The valves were closed. Anyway, I hook the hose and pull the valve for black, then gray. At the end of gray, I pick up the hose to get the last little bit down the septic, and the fitting on the end of my hose comes apart. Fortunately, it was only a gallon of gray, but boy that could have been so much worse. Well you did learn that you rinse the black with gray water, including yourself! Sorry for your misfortune...it'll only get better! Happy camping... Dave

RE: Pin Box System

If the dealer is willing to install a aftermarket pinbox at upgrade cost alone (something way less than the full cost outright), why wouldn't you do it? There's no doubt that it'll Mor/ryde or TrailAir will be better than a standard pinbox. Will it totally eliminate 'chucking'...maybe not. If you're paying full price to change pinboxes, try towing with the standard pinbox first. Dave

RE: NO Trailer Brakes

If you had trailers brakes when you use the manual slide on the brake controller, the brake system wiring is OK. Did you try turning up the gain on the brake controller? Have you checked the trailer's brakes as they're probably manually adjusted? Dave

RE: Levelled or lifted trucks

Go to the dealer with the measuring tape. I think that you'll find that a lot of 5th wheels are about 60" to the ground when level measured at the overhang. Thats the part of the camper that's to be 6" above your truck's bed rails. Dave

RE: Which trailer to buy?

These posts are tough as most will respond with 'buy the brand/model that I have'. With your truck you probably should look at campers with a GVWR of 10500 lb max. Assuming a pin weight of 20% will probably be under your truck's GVWR. Visit manufacturer's sites online and get an idea of the floorplan that best suits your needs. Once that's settled your can narrow it down to a specific manufacturer as most have the same or similar floorplans. The final decision may be more subtle differences with features, decor, cabinetry, etc. Good hunting... Dave

RE: Advertised hitch weight vs actual loaded weight

I also try to look at the storage areas on the camper and where they're located to get some idea of the impact when loaded. As an example, our camper's a rear kitchen layout and the pin weight was the same % unloaded or loaded. Some other layouts that don't hasve much storage behind the axles and the pin weight may grow significantly when loaded. Dave

RE: half ton tow vehicle

Towing near the design limits (not just tow rating) of any TV can be unpleasant. With today's half ton tow ratings so relatively high, many do not realize where they stand with respect to any of their ratings. So, having a more capable TV is always better when towing. But it is not something everyone can and is willing to justify. I currently tow our 2009 Jayco 32BHDS with my '99 Silverado 1500. It has the 5.3 ECSB, 4x4, w/ 3.73s. Our camper weighs 7984 as shipped from the factory. If that is not overweight, I don't know what is.X2 X2 And to make matters worst, 35 gal of water and firewood in the truck bed for probably another 400 lbs. Good Grief!!! Dave

RE: Forest River....Flagstaff 25KS vs Rockwocd 2503

Rockwood and Flagstaff share the same floorplans...only difference is the decals and the decor. Dave

RE: 5th Wheel towing questions

The unit is a Cougar 330RBK. Below are are specifications. I have a few questions. This is stated to be 1/2 ton towable. I just don't see it. I checked Keystone's web site. The only 1/2 towable 5th wheels they list are Cougar Xlite West Coast models. The East Coast Cougar Xlite are different floorplans and make no reference to half ton towable. The Cougar floorplans, East or West, make no reference to half ton towable. Dave

RE: 26-foot aluminum TT: what are decent ones?

If, "our," 26-foot weighed about 1,500/1,800 pounds lighter, I'd have a real nice outfit. Are you thinking that the lighter weight will mean much better towing fuel mileage? The camper's weight won't make much, if any difference. The biggest factor is aerodynamic drag and that won't have changed. I used to tow a 6000 lb TT and switched to a 8400 lb 5th wheel. The fuel mileage is virtually the same regardless of the 2400 lb increase as the TV/5th wheel is a much more aerodynamic package. Dave
