RE: automatic vs manual transmission

Today's manual transmissions cannot handle the load that their automatic counterparts can. Todays manuals will handle as much or more than the automatic counter parts......my 24 year old manual is rated for 26,000 GCWR. The manual is getting phased out because there is no demand for it in light duty trucks anymore. An automatic transmission is more reliable with no clutch or master or slave cylinders to fail. I can replace 4 complete clutch, master, and slave assemblies and still be under what it will cost you to replace your electronic 6 speed automatic. At that point my truck will have close to 400,000 miles on it. Manuals get better MPG since there is less parasitic loss in the drivetrain. IMO manuals are a better trans and cost less to operate than an auto. They give you more control over the power and breaking ability of the engine. The only advantage to the auto that I see is its a no brain drive.....stick it in "D" and push on the gas, that's my take anyhow. Well Said...

RE: automatic vs manual transmission

Where you drive should be taken into consideration as well. If you will be spending lots of time stuck in traffic your leg will really thank you for going with an automatic. The days of HIGH EFFORT clutch pedals have been gone for many decades. Hydraulic assisted clutches are nothing like there old counterparts. little or no pedal pressure needed to operate.

RE: automatic vs manual transmission

Today's manual transmissions cannot handle the load that their automatic counterparts can. Although I prefer the control of a manual transmission, I gave in to automatic for this reason. If you drive in stop and go traffic with the truck, the automatic will save your clutch leg and make for easier driving. ????????Really???????

RE: Cooking underway

I recently installed this 3000watt power inverter. It will power anything in the TC, even the microwave. Please DON'T ask how much it cost...LOL http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x94/desert1957/ScreenShot2012-12-07at75939PM_0.png http://dimensions.sensata.com/product-inverter/3000w-12vdc-pure-sine-l-series-inverter Desert

RE: honda 2000

no. you will need two of them in parallel. great generator, probably the best there is. for the price of one, you could buy two champion inverter/generators. My 2000 will run my 13.5K BTU AC but have to switch my Fridge to run on propane. Desert

RE: New Michelin LTX M/S2 Dually clearance issue??

I have read on some other forums that some aftermarket aluminum wheels for GM's have a little more offset, I don't know if it would be enough to make a difference. Every little bit would help. 5.00 inch to 5.350 would amount to almost 3/8 inch , might be enough to make the difference. Desert I think the total spacing would be 7/10ths of an inch. You would combine the two 0.350 backspacings to equal 0.700. That's close to 3/4". 3/4" is about what I have on my 2010 Dodge 3500 Dually. Not really because if you purchase a set of 4 aluminum wheels for your GM (2 Front and 2 rear) you are only gaining the offset on the outer rear which is about 3/8" roughly. The 5" offset steel wheel still remains on the inside. Desert

RE: New Michelin LTX M/S2 Dually clearance issue??

Just thought I would mention something everyone might not know. If you look at the "Accuride Wheel" catalog it list all the replacement wheels sizes and specs. Unfortunately for GM owners, replacement wheels have the least amount of offset, about 5.00 inches. Ford and Dodge wheels go up to 5.35 inches (on each wheel)or more, all this makes extra clearance at the tire. I guess my point is Ford and Dodge owners will have more clearance with the same 235 85 R 16 tire than GM guys. Desert That is exactly the problem with the GM's , the offset is the same till about 2010 when they went to the 17" wheel . Why they cut it so close is a mystery . Tires vary from make and model within the same size . I believe the GM spec calls for 8.8" being the max tire width , so check the tire specs for the one you are interested in. I am running 235's that are 9.2" and they show that they have touched at the bulge bouncing down the road at full load . So far it has been 3 years and 30000 miles and no troubles , but that is not proof of anything .I am still looking for a better solution because I do like the 235's . I have followed this subject on several forums and have not read of a single failure using Fred's spacers and think I am going that direction . The key to the spacers is to make sure they have the lip to keep the outer wheel hub-centric and stays centered because the lugs are washer type , not tapered .I had spacers on an old suburban for 100,000 miles with no problem . When you think about it all one ton dually's have a 4" spacer on the front wheels . I have read on some other forums that some aftermarket aluminum wheels for GM's have a little more offset, I don't know if it would be enough to make a difference. Every little bit would help. 5.00 inch to 5.350 would amount to almost 3/8 inch , might be enough to make the difference. Desert

RE: Great weekend until the transmission went south

WestCoast Transmission serviced our 7.3L F-250 annually when we lived on the Island. They kept repeating that giving these trannies good cool down time is important, especially after backing uphill which we had to do every time we returned home to Shawnigan Lake. Drives me crazy, but DH will idle the truck for about 10 minutes after some heavy duty work. No issues thus far ... touch wood. Not only backing but doing any heavy climbing in any gear that the Torque converter does not lock will rapidly raise the temperature of the tranny fluid....I watch my temp very close under those conditions. Lot's to be said for a manual tranny!!! Had that on our previous truck.. Jim I thought a lot about this when I built this truck for my TC 4 Speed with a "Granny" Low gear http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x94/desert1957/008.jpg Desert

RE: didn't secure my air conditioner

Did anyone else open this thread expecting a story about an air conditioner not being bolted down? :) To FishB8s: As others have said. The only real potential for harm to the AC would be if the voltage was too low due to too light of an extension cord to handle the current. The question now is, did the breaker trip right after you plugged in the camper, or did it try to supply power for part of that 2 hour time period before you noticed the tripped breaker? Turn off the AC, plug the camper back in and give the batteries time to charge, then give the AC a try. If it comes back on don't give it another thought. Yes , I sure did....
