RE: TOY HAULER MAGAZINE

No more magazines? - great, here comes the next mod -I'll have to mount a laptop and get satellite internet acces in the throne room to have something to read!!!!! :B
Seriously- I've enjoyed Toyhauler Magazine a lot. I've always looked forward to getting my next issue and eagerly read it cover to cover once I get it. Thanks Terry for a great run! I wish you luck on restructuring and hope to see something in the near future.

RE: Dexter EZ Flex for triple axle.

I would highly recommend it!!. If you had a chance to read my original posting
The Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection
you will see that I had a shackle failure on my Skyline Rampage 337(tandem axle though.) The EZ-Flex kit certainly tows smoother and less bounce. I've never had a chucking issue (trailer or otherwise!!) so I can't comment on that. I would go for it and not look back. I'm sure your triple axle 377 will get similar benefits. Once you see the beef on these Dexter units you will start to wonder about ALL the other trailers on the road that are running around on a ticking time bomb.

RE: Toyhauler Towing

We are in a similar situation with 2BlueHeelers-minus the RV endorsement-still working on that one. The wife will/can drive the rig. She will back up with coaching from the FRS radio and myself when needed. There have been some tight manuevers needed where I've guided her in/out from the best vantage point - the roof! This is where having low range shines!

RE: Ford Ranger payload

Our first "toyhauler" tow vehicle
1990 STX - 4.0 V6 4x4
It did okay-but it sure worked hard. I never did weigh it. Bought it at 105,000 miles. Sold it at 185,000 miles. Original transmission. Never towed in Overdrive. Serviced the tranny every year. My transmission guy said he had never seen one look so good with so many miles and with the kind of abuse dished on it. Never any major work other than a clutch fan/water pump and multiple tries on the front rotors/pads to eliminate rotor warpage.

RE: No Good - DEAD - Prodigy- BACK IN BUSINESS

rvnit-
Nope-I could not find the receipt. Not needed. The phone number I called to get technical assistance and warranty info was 1-888-785-5832.
Let us know how it turns out.

I'm running the Tru-Cool Max 47,000 also to mine in addition to the stock one. Fairly easy install. Well worth the money.

RE: 2wheel or 4wheel for tow vechicle

I personally would not want to tow my trailer without having 4 wd. I have installed a 2 wd low range unit on my tv and often use it to manuever in and out of the campsite, my rv access, etc. Some of the steep climbs/descents I encounter I like to go easy on the tranny by altering the gearing by using low range 2wd-plus it is easier on the brakes.

RE: replacing brake controller

Also-
The Prodigy unit comes with a Lifetime Warranty. Mine just died after 7 years of use. The company said just bring it in to a dealer and they will do a warranty exchange. Sure enough. No receipt or anything. That is great sevice!!

RE: No Good - DEAD - Prodigy- BACK IN BUSINESS

UPDATE-
Kudos to the Prodigy manufacture - Cequent and my local dealer-Village RV for doing just as they said. My wife took the unit in to the parts department and came home with a new unit. I installed it last night and sure enough- I've got brakes now!
Again thanks to these two companies for their excellent customer service. There are not many products/companys that say they offer a lifetime warranty on their product AND stand behind it!!

No Good - DEAD - Prodigy- BACK IN BUSINESS

Looks like my Prodigy brake controller has gone bad. I had a feeling that the thumb wheel adjustment had stopped working. Everything displays normal when connected up to the trailer-but when I go to apply the brakes or manual override - NADA. It just stares at me with the double O.O's. The last time I towed I had turned the adjuster to zero and now it seems stuck there although the wheel still turns. A call to the technical assistance line verified my suspicion. I'm told the Prodigy comes with a lifetime warranty and all I need to do is return it to the authorized Prodigy dealer where I got it and they will do a warranty replacement for me. Unit is about 7 years old. No problems up until now. I'll let you know if they will truly stand behind it.
Anyone else ever have this happen?

RE: Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection pt. 2

Wow! Nice catch. Did you read some of the archived posts on these spring hanger/frame area failures? Skyline Rampage Frame Failure
I'd see about boxing the hangers and maybe even putting in the 2" spacer so the hangers are not welded directly onto the frame flange.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

SRockwood-
I got one of the earlier models that came with the 2" receiver on back of the unit standard with the narrower track width axle. I believe on the later models they went full TV width and began to offer the 2" receiver as an option as well as the spare tire mount. I finally got a spare last summer when the OE tires separated. I want to fabricate a mount also for the spare-I wish I could find a diagram or picture of the mount they offered.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

Ya-i think those OEM Tires were not up to the task. They were still in-tact but were bouncing horribly as I think they were becoming more and more separated internally. No noticeable wear on the pin holes on the receiver unit. Structurally everything looks sound. I re-check the torque on the mounting bolts to the frame periodically. The lateral rods help to dissipate the horizontal forces on the receiver. I would think the greatest forces get exerted at slow speed manuevers when negotiating tight turns. Had 1 very panic stop thru So. Cal- 60 mph stop fully loaded on a transition ramp from 1 fwy to the next. I was amazed at how quickly the extra set of brakes on the HB helped stop us straight and true-it could have been ugly!
I may switch out this receiver with a Tow Beast or a Super Hitch down the road.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

Popsracer-
No steering on the axle-think of it similar to a spread axle semi-trailer. The tires scrub to negotiate turns.
