RE: Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection pt. 2

Wow! Nice catch. Did you read some of the archived posts on these spring hanger/frame area failures? Skyline Rampage Frame Failure
I'd see about boxing the hangers and maybe even putting in the 2" spacer so the hangers are not welded directly onto the frame flange.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

SRockwood-
I got one of the earlier models that came with the 2" receiver on back of the unit standard with the narrower track width axle. I believe on the later models they went full TV width and began to offer the 2" receiver as an option as well as the spare tire mount. I finally got a spare last summer when the OE tires separated. I want to fabricate a mount also for the spare-I wish I could find a diagram or picture of the mount they offered.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

Ya-i think those OEM Tires were not up to the task. They were still in-tact but were bouncing horribly as I think they were becoming more and more separated internally. No noticeable wear on the pin holes on the receiver unit. Structurally everything looks sound. I re-check the torque on the mounting bolts to the frame periodically. The lateral rods help to dissipate the horizontal forces on the receiver. I would think the greatest forces get exerted at slow speed manuevers when negotiating tight turns. Had 1 very panic stop thru So. Cal- 60 mph stop fully loaded on a transition ramp from 1 fwy to the next. I was amazed at how quickly the extra set of brakes on the HB helped stop us straight and true-it could have been ugly!
I may switch out this receiver with a Tow Beast or a Super Hitch down the road.

Popsracer-
No steering on the axle-think of it similar to a spread axle semi-trailer. The tires scrub to negotiate turns.

I don't remember which tires it came stock with but they still had good tread life on them. I think it was the heat that did the OEM tires in. When we stop for fuel I always go around and inspect each tire on our rig. I found the HB tires had bulges on the tread. I wish I had ordered the higher capacity model with the 16" tires. That way I could have had the same size tires and my trailer. I may be pushing the 3500lb pin weight rating on the HB.

RE: Thought I'd Seen It All.....Until

I agree with Srockwood. Glad to see this thread cleaned up. We've probably towed our trailer about 9k miles total-7500 miles of which have been towed with the Hitch Buddy. Last summer on our trip to the Oregon Dunes I had to replace the tires on the HB as they were separating badly. A typical fuel stop usually takes a good 20 minutes or so because every RVer who is at the fuel station wants to talk about the HB and ask questions-I usually have quite the audience. The ride in the TV is great. The suspension of the HB really isolates the road bumps from the tow vehicle. It actually is a smoother tow when we use the HB.

Wow! Some of you guys are pretty passionate about knocking things you have not tried! Haven't you ever read Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham?
Ask me your questions about the Hitch Buddy- we have one and use it. My wife even drives it!! Yes-the tires scrub in turns. Yes it does increase the turning radius because it fights the steer tires. No it does not make the tow vehicle wiggle, jiggle or wobble. It is nearly as stable as when I am conventionally hooked up with my in in bed 16K Reese Slider. Why in the world would I use one of these? Because it works well for certain towing situations for ME and MY family. We need the camper shell to shuttle our 185lb dog and to and from our long trips to and from the sand dunes. The Hitch Buddy does increase my overall rig length from a conventional tow by 8 feet. Extra caution must be used on wet roadways as although the air shock does transfer some weight from the HB to the receiver and thus the rear axle of the tow vehicle-it is not even close to the pin weight over the axle of the tow vehicle to provide great traction. Btw-I did not feel comfortable with the factory 2" receiver ratings (12,500 lbs) so I replaced it with a Putnam XDR that has a rating of 15,000 lbs weight carrying capacity. Anyone up for a test tow- Sam I AM ???
Check out some of my pictures in my sig.

RE: The Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection

Wow!! There was no way to tell that the equalizer was broken like that until you jacked up the trailer and let the suspension droop. I'm glad everyone is getting in on this. I would imagine with triples you might need to do that prying and jacking to get things to line up-I don't think it presents a problem-but maybe you guys who have already installed yours on a triple axle can comment on what kind of persuading you might have had to do.

RE: The Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection

Allright!!Allright!! I'm still waiting for mine! Doesn't look like I'll have it before our trip this weekend-leaving Friday. Sounds like Dexter is giving priority to their internet purchases over the wholesale distributors and retail outlets. I "ordered" mine on Tuesday May 26th--- Ahhhh- I should of gone to Midas!!!

The Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection

Hey guys. It's been awhile since I've posted. We haven't had the trailer out for camping since Thanksgiving at Glamis. Caught this the night before departure for Memorial Weekend when I was checking/adjusting tire air pressures on the trailer tires. Pretty eye opening!!! Luckily the local trailer supply store had them in stock. I've temporarily replaced the faulty one as well as the "good" one on the same side.

I will be installing the Dexter E-Z Flex system with the wet bolt kit as soon as it comes in before my next trip.
Dexter E-Z Flex
I would estimate less than 10,000 miles on this trailer. Any guesses what would cause the failure so prematurely??
