RE: Scary Handling Problem

We gave up!! Finally called it quits. Traded the RV in on a class a with a LONG wheel base. I think the whole problem has been the wheel base all along. I will say the thing that helped the most of everything we did was the heavy duty sway bars. Everything else would help a little, but no joy. In the end, just not worth the worry trying to drive the thing and the safety issues when it wouldn't respond correctly.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

He really didn't say much. He and his wife are thinking about buying an RV and are VERY interested in our results. So far, it hasn't been a very good recommendation.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Sunday I borrowed 500 lbs of clay from a potter friend of mine and piled it between the front seats. Was going to take it for a spin, but noticed the left rear tire seemed low. Checked it and found the inside rear tire was FLAT!! So, Monday, I aired it up and took it to the tire shop. They fixed the tire and I took it for a ride that afternoon. Unfortunately, we had 35 mph wind gusts that day. Probably not the BEST test drive. This afternoon it is sunny with wind about 9mph. So, off we go. Drove it about 30 miles with the 500 lbs in it and got it weighed. Front axle was 3960 and rear 8100. Then offloaded the 500 lbs and weighed it again. Front axle 3600 and rear 7980. Have to say, it drives better without the 500 lb extra weight up front. Guess we'll just use it for a while and then decide if we're going to sell it and get something else.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Caster after alignment is front right 5.9, front left 5.2. We're going to try adding some weight to the front and see what happens.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Finished installing front and rear sway bars. It did make a difference. Only time it's really white knuckle now is when trucks go around. Have to say, it still drives different when the toad is hooked up. Steering seems more stiff when the toad is there. Right now, I'm just pondering.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Since the front weight was done without me in the rv, I'm getting closer to that 75% mark. I think all the tanks are behind the rear wheels. Why they did that, I'll never know. Somebody had their head somewhere it shouldn't have been. The spare is in the back storage compartment. The generator is also in the back. Guess I'll have to think some on where and how I could possibly move some of this stuff.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Weighed it a while back -
front axle - 3480
rear axle - 8420
I'll have to look at the tire sizes tomorrow.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

FINALLY back to working on installing the heavier sway bars. While working on this, a thought occurred. All 6 tires are not the same. The outside backs are Michelins. The inside backs and the fronts are Goodyears. Could this cause any of what we are seeing?

RE: Buying cruise America ex rental

If you want a used RV in New York, try El Monte RV. I personally think they take better care of their fleet and they have an office in Linden, New Jersey, a suburb of New York city. Just a thought.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Ordered them online from sdtrucksprings.com. Haven't looked at the installation instructions online yet, but when I put on the saf-t-steer and the rear trac bar, I had to call hellwig about a question and they were VERY helpful. Really like the company.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Hellwig front and rear sway bars on order. Let's see how much they change things. We've had the thing weighed and the front is about 30% of the overall weight. When we travel, we try to put as much of the stuff in the overhead up front as possible and leave the rear compartments as empty as possible.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

FINALLY got the RV back. If anyone in the DFW area wants a recommendation for a great fiberglass repair place, I have it. They did an excellent job. It still doesn't drive right. We finally had our friend measure the overhang on her motorhome and compared it to ours. Her overhang from the center of the rear tire to the end of the rear bumper is 128". Ours is 142". So, the last thing we can try is the sway bars. We're researching that right now and hope to get them changed out before mid January when we have our next big trip planned. Does anyone have any experience with tires making a difference in the handling? Just a thought.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

We used Longhorn Tire in Mount Vernon for the alignment. They are supposedly the best in the area. HOWEVER, they're also the ones who damaged the RV. That said, I don't think you'll EVER see that happen again. We had them set the caster way ++ because of things said on this forum. Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy your MH.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Just got the estimate from the repair shop - $10,500. We're in line for the work - they say 2 weeks before they can start and then 2 weeks to do the work. Anxious to get it back!!

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Met with the insurance adjuster Monday. He TALKS a good game. We'll have to see how it all turns out. With the help of someone of the forum, we found a place in Burleson that does good fiberglass work. We emailed him the pics and we're taking the rv over there on Tuesday. He's supposed to coordinate with the insurance guy. I was worried about them maybe totaling the thing. The insurance guy said they total them when the repair will be 75% or more of the value. He didn't think it would come to that. Let's hope not.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

After looking at some reviews of RV service places, we're now considering taking it to Wade's in Oklahoma up by Tulsa - a 4 hour drive, but they have good reviews. Anybody had any experience there?

Does anybody have any recommendations or NONrecommendations for a place around Dallas that does bodywork on Class C's? We're thinking about taking it to McClains in Rockwall.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Got the bigger bushing put on and the caster on the left is now set to 5.1, right to 5.8. Drove just the RV in windy conditions and it drove GREAT!! Would have liked to try the toad with it, BUT the alignment place drove the rear end of the RV into a fence when they were trying to pull it into the stall. Back bumper now is bent at a 90 degree angle. Back panel is broken. Back of both right and left sides are damaged. Backup camera doesn't work - don't know if that's from wires being damaged or what. They say their insurance will cover the repairs. We'll see.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

I know, but we want the left to be 5.3 and the right more than that.
