RE: Off brand ATV's

I'd look at used name brands. Suggest you get one for yourself while you're at it. Have fun.
Believe me I am a name brand guy.
The problem is that a used Honda TRX90 that's even 5 years old is over $1000.00. I can get a brand new 110cc off brand for $399. Apples and oranges, or is it... I was doing some reading that off brands now share a lot of the same parts with different stickers as the name brands. And if I got a used brand name I would have to pay someone to work on it, but the cheap one at least would have a warranty. Seems to me, that if he gets 2 years out of it I'd be way better off getting the cheapo. If he turns out to be a great MX rider I would not hesitate investing in a good piece of equipment. But I don't want to bite that bullet unless I have to. He has a nice bicycle because even good kids bikes are still under $300. A good atv could set me back thousands.
But most assuredly it would not be safe for him to ride alone ;) Daddy would have to have one too. Further exacerbates my cost issue though.

RE: Gutters

I had this discussion with my neighbor. We live in a heavily wooded area. I went with cheap Lowes screen guards and installed them myself. Probably only paid $100. 6 Autumns later I have not had a single clog. My neighbor went the expensive route and had the top cover models installed. Cost him about $3500. I would think you could almost hire an immigrant worker to live on the roof and keep it clean 24/7 for that. He said they look nicer. Maybe. Can't remember the last time I pulled up to anyone's house and thought "nice gutters". I mean the ones I installed you can't even see. Anyway, the problem with his fancy top cover models in that in a hard rain they flow over. The rain goes pretty heavy into the beds around his house. To each his own. I have had great luck and spent very little money with the Lowes Cheapos.

Off brand ATV's

Let me preface by saying I know little about motorcycles or atvs. I've ridden them, friends have had them etc, but never owned one. My son who is 9 expressed an interest in getting a 4 wheeler or dirt bike. We have several acres of wooded property so it makes sense we could have something like that. Prices on new or even used brand name bikes (Yamaha, Honda, KTM) etc are way too much money to spend on something that we aren't even sure if he'll take to it, and if he does I imagine he'll grow out of what he can fit now pretty soon. There are quite a few places around that sell off brand ones. Something his size in the 90-110cc category can be had for 1/3 of what a brand name one would sell for. I hear they can break easier, makes sense but they carry a warranty and the local shops assure me they can get parts pretty readily. I am a firm believer in getting what you pay for as I have raced bicycles for years and know the value of a high end bike. But he's 9. I mean seriously how long will he have it? Seems to me that saving a LOT of money to ease him into it makes much more sense than getting a used one at 3x the price for a name brand which I would have to pay a mechanic anyway. I did have a cousin that had an off brand atv and said they had no issues with it. Ran hard and lasted until they sold it. Anyone have thoughts?

RE: Boondocking at Walmart

As others have said we see this topic almost weekly. What I still can't fathom is why it's such a heated debate. If someone wants to stay at a WM and they let them, who cares? I don't get it. One of the coolest things about an RV is it's a rolling apartment. You can stay anywhere. And if that anywhere is ok with the management, what's all the fuss about? I really don't understand why folks get their knickers all in a twist about what other folks are doing. You do your thing and let everyone else do theirs. If you don't want to stay at Walmart, then don't. If you do and it works for you, great. Who cares?

RE: Good Sam GPS

Unless they upgraded the processors from the previous RVND 5510 and 7710 I would stay away from it. That's all they are is the same RVND models with GS campgrounds on it. The previous ones had every campground in it anyway so I am not sure what the GS partnership is all about. I have an RVND 5510 and the thing freezes up constantly. Tells me I will be on a dirt road in a half a mile even if I am on the interstate, and the customer service for Rand McNally is obviously overseas. In India I think and they don't speak good English. I have had mine replaced twice, and it still freezes up in the most convenient locations like on the DC beltway. The solution by customer service is to download repair files which takes hours. And not real convenient while travelling. And touch screen response time is very slow. Like 10 second between the time I touch the screen and it reacts. Again not helpful in traffic. It has some great features, lots of POIs and is fantastic when it works. And that's the problem, a lot of times it stops working. It's not reliable. Again, if they upgraded the processor over last years RVND models, maybe you'll be ok. Otherwise look elsewhere. I will never buy another Rand McNally product again. Now I use the co pilot app on my I phone. Cheap and easy. I may never buy another gps.

RE: GPS

Do NOT get an RVND 5510. I wasted my money on one of those. While it has a lot of POI's, tons of info, RV Specific, and overall great when it works. That's the problem, it freezes up constantly, continues to tell me I will be on a dirt road in .6 miles even on a highway, and their customer service barely speaks English. Their solution to the problem is to always do a file repair. I have never had a GPS where the processor is so unstable it requires repeated file repairs. Especially handy when it freezes up and you are on the DC beltway. And finally it's heavy. Downright brick. Still keeps it from being too light for a boat anchor. Expensive paperweight. Now I use CoPilot app on my Iphone. Works great. The co pilot app is only about $10.00 if you download the maps. I'll never buy a gps again.

RE: Electric anode for LP water heater?

Check it out really good. A Motor Homes as new as your should probably already have the gas/electric option via a simple switch. Have you looked for a switch?
Nope no switch. LP only.

Electric anode for LP water heater?

This may sound like a silly question, but I think I read somewhere that some LP water heater units can add an electric anode to heat via electric vs gas. Does such things really exist and can they be added to an LP atwood WH?

RE: Corn Toss

We made ours. 1x3 painted frame, 1/2" solid maple top, clamped and glued, we ended up doing a surfboard theme on the top with green and blue stripes and left the rest natural, several coats of varnish, hardwood legs on the bottom with hinges. They are heavy duty but turned out awesome. I got a few pounds of feed corn, some heavy duty hawaiian floral pattern material in 2 differnt colors, and sewed up our own bags. Was a good bit of work, but far better quality than anything you'll buy. And you can make whatever design you want. Totally custom and not another one like it.

RE: BEST gps

I am not sure what the best GPS is. Mainly it comes down to preference. But I can tell you what isn't the best; the RVND 5510. Pretty expensive paperweight.

Anything else on the GFI circuit? You may be trying to draw more than 20 with the addition of the TT.

RE: I want to build my coach out of legos

I downloaded the lego designer and it's a helpful program for sure but it's clunky to work with. The upside is it will create instructions for you. Downside it's every bit like doing it twice and real legos are easier to work with. I think a scale of 1" = 1'. I should end up with a 30" x 1 foot tall monster. Anything smaller and I am thinking details will be lost. Lots of specialty pieces I'll be needing for bin doors etc. We'll see how it goes. I'll document my build. Thinking the son and I might start soon. Sure would be nice if Lego gets back to me with a basic build sheet for one of the ones they have. Modifying an existing design would be easier than scratch. But who knows, if I nail it maybe I could sell the plans or models.

RE: Gas Pods for an RV to improve gas milage?

Remember the vortex/tornado you could put in your carb to allow fuel to enter the carb with more velocity?
And I think someone else already said it, but I have 5 of these on the top of mine already. They are called clearance lights. Thank goodness they are there or I am certain I'd be getting 3mpg instead of the 8-9 I get now.

I want to build my coach out of legos

Returning from a trip to Lego Land Fla. My 9 year old and I LOVED it. If you have kids the place is awesome. Anyway, while there they have these various massive city models. These things are huge and one such model is Daytona 500. In the infield are various motorhomes. The detail was incredible and they looked to be about 18 - 24" long. Slides, graphics, etc. So having millions of legos I wanted to try and build my coach. Anyone ever try this? What's the best approach? Lego designer? I emailed the park but have yet to get a response. Am I nutty? - Wait don't answer that. Saw a youtube video where a kid built his grandpa's Winnebago complete with bins, slides etc. Figure I could try that.. I've said that before with mixed results though.

RE: The elephant behind the palm tree...

I usually get this question asked in a sarcastic way when I'm refueling, "what kind of mileage does that thing get?" My reply, "enough"!
I usually get "how much does it take to fill that thing up?" - I started responding, "are you offering to buy my gas?"

RE: Toilet bowl seal not holding water

Update - resolved. Replaced ball valve and seal. They sent the wrong instructions so had to figure it out on my own so took longer than anticipated. That said still straight forward. But if you ever attempt this, whatever you do, do NOT let the spring get relased from it's holding notches. Quite a booger getting that thing back on. All done, cleaner than it was when I bought probably, and back in holding water. $20 fix. No idea what the dealership would have soaked me for - pardon the pun. Thanks all for the advice.
