RE: how do you plan your trips?

Just promise me one thing...when driving in Texas and there is a paved shoulder, move over. I just followed in my toad three snow birds from Indiana caravaning along at 50-55 mph, not allowing room between them to be able to pass one at a time and they dang sure hugged the center line. Traffic was backedup for miles. As we say, be a friendly driver in Texas.

RE: Advice on campgrounds in Yellowstone and Tetons

I guess a lot has changed in a few weeks. We left Gardiner July 11 and drove straight thru to Coulter Bay CG in a 38DP and yes there was construction and yes it was not a smooth surface but it was not in any wasy as rough as US 287 in OK.
I don't have a clue how long it took because I was on vacation and not in a hurry.
A friend of mine has a Hummer and I won't ride with him on the best of roads becuase they ride so rough.

RE: Advice on campgrounds in Yellowstone and Tetons

You would not take the Beartooth Hwy from Cody. You would intersect the hwy but west of the Beartooth scenery. We were there middle of July and they were still skiing.
We spent nine days in YS and two in the Tetons. If I had it to do over, I would spend one full day in the Tetons, half of that in Jackson.

RE: Advice on campgrounds in Yellowstone and Tetons

I was just in Yellowstone earlier this week. Whatever you do avoid taking the South road out of Yellowstone to the Tetons in the MH. It is under construction and is dirt for over 15 miles. And it's not smooth dirt. I almost rattled my motorhome to death. I would recommend going in through Cody and working your way over to the Gizzly RV park. Take the toad everyplace from there. Make sure you get reservations now as they are getting a record number of visitors this year.
thanks for letting me know about this construction but the south entrance seems to be the only reasonable way to go between the tetons and YS. Are you suggesting that we use West YS as a base camp for the Tetons? Any more advice would be appreciated.
Its probably two plus hours from west entrance to GT. Four hour rt makes for a long day unless you plan on leaving at 6 and returning late. I don't recommend driving YS at night. That bison standing in the middle of the road will be hard to see in the dark. I think you need to base camp in coulter Bay area, then move up to Gardiner to base camp. If you don't do another single thing, take the Beartooth Hwy dr from the east entrance to Cooke City in the toad.If you plan your RV relocation on weekends...no construction work is being done.

RE: Advice on campgrounds in Yellowstone and Tetons

A Heads Up
My grandson is a ranger at Yellowstone and all leaves for 14th and 15th of August have been cancelled. He was not told why except a big event. I think it is connected to the 50th anniversary of the huge earthquake that hit there in August 1959 and killed 29 campers , formed lake, etc. I would check around if planning to be in Y those days. I'll be there up at Yellowstone Edge (nicest private CG in area) campground in Emigrant and will check myself as the date approaches.
Its the last free entrance weekend for all NP's.

RE: Chicago-Yellowstone via I90

We spent 9 days in Hill City at Rafter J RV ranch. Great place if you like space. We personally enjoyed Custer state park more than Yellowstone. Much more wildlife with much less driving. The Spearfish Canyon is a great drive.
The Beartooth hwy from the ne entrance to YNP is fantastic. Best part, I guess, due to the economy the parks are not very busy.

Bryan, if you can get in, we have been staying at Rafter J Ranch resort in Hill City for 9 days and it is fantastic. Looooong and wide spaces. KOA would triple the spaces in this park. Leaving Thursday morning for Fleetwood rally in Gillette. Safe travels.

RE: Palo Duro Canyon campground

Reserve America is about useless. I've checked a cg and its full, 5 minutes later it has openings, 5 minutes later its full. The state Of Texas knows they have a problem but they also know they have a contract. Bottom line, call the park direct eventhough they aren't suppose to take reservations more than a day ahead, they understand the problem.

RE: CG on I-10 West of Lafayette, LA and East of Lake Charles

Drive straight through Houston. Beltway cost money and is longer. 40 miles from near the Highlands where I-10 widens to where it becomes 2 lanes again on the west side. I drive 50-55 through town.
There are currently 2 posts open on I-10.
travel advise needed for i-10,Fla to San Antonio
Best east to west route through Houston
copy the 2 above links to the search box on Rv.net. I drive the route from Orange to Winnie and miss the construction in Vidor. Highlands and Wallisville has construction but they are BEFORE the Beltway and the loop.
If you can make any sense of this then you should try it. I drove 50-55 mph thru Houston many times in the middle of the night, but of course I only livef there 35 years. The questions becomes, are you looking for time or miles. Many times I would drive an extra 20 miles to save ten minutes.

RE: CG on I-10 West of Lafayette, LA and East of Lake Charles

Personally, I would get as far west as you can. After you cross the Texas state line, you've got a pretty go haul to Fredrickburg not even considering what time you're going to hit good ole Houston traffic. IH10 west leaving Houston in the afternoon can be a 2 hour drive from the loop to Katy.

RE: Is this typical? Sewer dumping question.

A gallon of "liquid" between the valve and the cap is almost impossible. Think in the terms of a one gallon milk jug. My drain line only extends about 4-6 inches from the valve. Am I missing something?

RE: Waco & San Antonio Campgrounds?

Make sure you have two things...a water pressure regulator, their pressure is 160 lbs and plenty of ac. It hot in San Antonio in June. Also, do not follw your GPS to Travelers, it'll take you some roads that aren't very RV friendly.
its a great city, enjoy.
