RE: Here is something to chew on.......

Why is it that the auto industry gets all the "Buy American" rhetoric? Other industries have been quietly moved 100% off shore and nobody gave a rip. I know a lot of American auto workers that bought foriegn made electronics and clothing back in the '70s and didn't care because the American workers in those industries weren't union members.
It's because they are one of the only durable goods manuffacturers left standing. We cared when it happened to big steel. We cared when it happened to Machine Tools, Rail cars, appliances, electronics, etc. And it's happening to aircraft, construction equipment, agriculture equipment, shipbuilding. And we do care. We all care. It's just that now we are good at manufacturing hamburgers, potato chips, frozen foods, and RV's. I care about that too. But what about the durable goods manufacturing? We cannot survive with only service economy.
Oh...We care alright. But those in power don't know how to deal with it.
Just for the record, rail cars used on US freight railroads are nearly 100% US made from US sourced components.

RE: engine mods

I wonder about a 400 small block Chevy crank in the 350...which would give you a 383 cube V8. Also an RV/tow truck cam ?
You can call different cam companies and their consultants can advise and this is something I would recommend.
Or check out some GM crate engines...not all are hot rod engines.
You have to be careful though....all this can add up and unless you can do the work yourself...it could be costly.
Maybe not cost effective.
I'm not an expert and many of the other guys offering advice aren't either. So wise to review different ideas with someone who has expertise.
GM offers a HT383 through the GM Performance Parts catalog. HT stands for high torque. Its whole purpose is to replace the SB 350 in the TBI trucks. It is designed for towing, and has something like 400 ft/lbs of torque. I have thought about it for my '94 K2500 if its 350 ever wears out. (I may have to help it ;) ).
Edit: Right now all I am finding links to is the pre-emission hot rod engine, I'll see if I can find a link to the replacement towing engine later.

RE: Made in America?

Just like the one posted yesterday by the Motley Fool, this one is full of holes too. It list Chrysler as an American Company, which it is NOT. It list the transmission as either produced in the US or is not, which leaves a gaping question.....where did all the parts inside the transmission come from. Same question for the engine and all other components used to manufacturer the vehicle. Again, it appears to give Mexico and Canada credit for being American made products, which they are NOT, as they are foreign countries......For any person, especially a supposed learned college professor, to publish such incomplete and inaccurate info makes one wonder just who these people are trying to fool......
Name calling......
I guess we are in Kindergaten.

RE: Might be forced to buy Diesel

Modern diesels are pretty quick to warm up. I wouldn't be concerned about 6 miles. If it becomes a problem you could always take it for a long drive in the weekends.
A big block gasser would fit your needs the best, but those are no longer available brand new.

RE: NASCAR at it finest ........huh?

Dick Trickle never won a cup race, but always was very popular. Danica has won in open wheel. She is a racer. Nascar has to do something to grow not decline. Some of our female friends are somewhat becoming interested in our beloved sport, so that having a female driver, if it helps the gate, is more than OK with us.
If it was easy, everyone would do it!
Dick Trickle was in the headlines just recently........

RE: 2013 Major League Baseball Season Thread

My youngest son (who BTW, is making his own headlines playing baseball) attended the StLouis Cardinals vs Colorado Rockies game one week ago tonight.
We got to watch history. Shelby Miller gave up a base hit to the first batter, and then retired the next 27 batters in a row. Had he retired those 27 without the base hit it would have been the über rare perfect game.
Also on that night John Lester of the Boston Red Sox was one hit away from a perfect game. This is the only time in MLB history that two pitchers were one hit away from perfect games on the same night.
What makes Shelby Miller's one hitter so special was the fact that he retired 27 in a row. That is only possible by starting the game with a base hit, and if you were to look into MLB history more rare than a true perfect game.

RE: Help with gun selection

Please, please, please!!!!!!!! before firing a pistol/rifle/shotgun at water, know that, and you are fully aware of, what will happen to your discharged projectile.
Practice shooting at water when you know that no one else is around just to see how your shots will react. Water is unpredictable when shooting at it. You can be firing at a surface target 5 feet away, and hit an unintended target a 1/4 mile away........honestly. Almost every shot fired at water from a low angle will ricochet back up out of the water........ Think of skipping stones.
I want you to protect your self, and a firearm is a straight forward way to do it, but you need to know that discharging a firearm at water can go really bad really fast. It is not like firing into a wooded area, or dirt bank.

RE: Anyone know about the Chevy 409 truck engine ?

The 348/409 (Z11 427) was known as the W engine (from the shape of the valve cover). They had a flat cylinder head deck with the combustion chamber integrated into the engine block. Compression ratio was adjusted with domed pistons of varying height.
As far as I know, the truck engines shared the same block/head/crankshaft components as their passenger car, and pick up truck brethren.
409s were notorious for dropping valves, but a valve spring retainer, and lock upgrade would cure this.
The Mk-IV big blocks that replaced the W engines in 1965 were stronger, lighter, and more efficient.

RE: 2014 CHEV. 4500??

He asked about the 4500..... I answered.
It's out there, may not be for everyone.
However, a Chevy Express 4500 could be what replaces the F-450 I drive at work. We will see when that time comes. If Chevy doesn't start building a 4500 pickup then odds are it will be an Express. And ugly is a matter of opinion.

RE: GMs new secret weapon......LOL

A Buick passed me on the interstate the other day. I had to do a double take to see what it was.......definitely not your grandpa's Buick. A much sportier looking car than I would have expected a Buick to be. I would even go as far to say above par when you compare it to its competition.
