RE: TC Pass thru window

Mine leaked bad. I caulked it shut because I never used it anyway, doesn't leak now.

RE: Converting to a gooseneck hitch

I have the B&W hitch and a goose neck adapter that has been used for 10 years on my trailer, no problems.

RE: Opinion on Timbrens

I have them, like them a lot. They are probably the best "bang for the buck" mod I have done.

RE: Pull weight??

I would not. The 9960 lbs is more than likely "dry" weight, loaded ready to camp you will probably be pushing 11500-12000 pounds. That would be VERY heavy for a half ton truck. On edit- I looked up the tow rating for 2003 F150's. The highest tow rating for any configuration is 8800 lbs.

RE: 1992 chevrolet 3/4 H.D. total weight

My truck is a little newer and has the 454, but this might get you close. My 1998 owners manual says that a 5.7L with a 3.73 rear end can tow 6,000 lbs and with a 4.10 it can tow 7,500 lbs. By the way, you have a pretty heavy truck, my scaled weight with the 454, me, turnover ball hitch and a half tank of gas was only 6,600 lbs.

RE: K & N Cold Air Filters.

Back on topic- From my experience, K&N are good filters. I didn't buy mine so much for performance, but for economics. A K&N costs about what 3 replaceable filters would cost me, so over the life of the vehicle, you come out way ahead. Even when you factor in the cost of the oil you still save a lot of money. And as for how good they filter, I have a vehicle that I put a K&N on when new and after 150,000+ miles it still runs great and there are no signs of particles getting through and in to the throttle body. My 2 cents. I have never personally spoken to one person who had any or all the problems ballyhoed on this forum about K&N filters. I have run one on my unit for 8 years with no problems. A close friend of mine has had one on his 92 Ford 460 since it was new and no sweeter running rig can be found. I know several others who have been running them for years and 2 of them run regular blackstone tests with absolutely no problems. I do know I have saved multiples of my K& N costs in savings over oem paper units @ 25 to 30 dollars each. I have told of using a new Kleenex to go up in the piping to the turbo from the airbox and it usually comes back out as clean as it went in after 8 plus years so not very much dirt is going into the engine or turbo either!!IMHO. It must be a right of passage on these forums for many newbies to put up numbers of posts condeming K&N.. Even when like old Sargeant Schultz of Hogans Heroes said ( I Know Nothing ,I Know Nothing)!! Have a great K&N day You got it. And because of the good luck I had with the vehicle in my previous post, I have installed K&N's on every car I own with no ill effects. You guys are the only one's I know that haven't had problems with K & Ns. From dirty mass air flow sensors (from over-oiling) to sucking dirt into turbos (from under-oiling), we've seen way more problems with them than they are worth. I will not put one on my vehicle, nor will I ever recommend one to any of our customers. But I guess our years of experience running a repair shop and being in the auto repair business means nothing compared to your own vehicles and your friend's good experience. Jmho. Don't take it personally, I guess they have just worked out for me. I must not over or under oil. I'm pretty meticulous by nature and mechanically inclined.

RE: Replacing 245 75-16 with 265-75-16 on GMC

Going from a section width of 245 to 265 is a difference of only 20 millimeters, that equals 0.78 inches. I agree that you should not put huge tires on stock wheels, but a tire a little more than 3/4 of an inch wider than stock shouldn't hurt anything.

How much do you tow with your 454?

I was inspired by the "How much do you tow with your Hemi?" post. Just wondering how many other 454 people are out there and how you put the Chevy BB to work.

Calling all electrical gurus

I had a strange electrical thing happen today. I turned on the stereo and noticed a kind of "buzz" in the background. When I turned on the a/c it kicked on then off abruptly and the stereo went out also. Checked all the breakers and nothing tripped, also, no blown fuses. Switched on all lights and they worked- then comes the strange part- when I cycle the water pump or water heater switches, the stereo powers back up. Next I disconnected the batteries and unplugged shore power. Pulled out the converter and looked for loose wires, didn't notice any. Anyway, decided to hook everything back up and the stereo and a/c work normally now. My question is now, how did the a/c effect the stereo or vice versa and why did turning on the water pump or water heater power up the stereo? Any of your insight would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Truck/ 5th wheel compatibility question

Is the rear suspension stock? If so you should be fine. But if you have a lifted truck, then the bed height may be an issue for keeping the fiver level. Stock pin height for a fiver is in the range of 47-48 inches with a drop of about 12 inches from the gooseneck, which puts the gooseneck at 60 inches off the ground. You need at least 6-7 inches space between the gooseneck and the top of the truck bed. So, if the bed is more than about 54 inches, then you may have a problem. In addition, assuming a pin weight of 20% for the fiver, that may not settle your stiff rear suspension enough to help either. It is stock height, but has a healthy stack of helper springs, timbrens, slightly bigger than stock tires and a sway bar. Thanks for the response!

Truck/ 5th wheel compatibility question

Hi, I'm a truck camper guy that is also going to start towing a 5th wheel part of the time. My truck is a '98 Chevy K2500HD with a 454 and 3.73 axle. Suspension is not a question since the truck is set up to haul 3000 lbs + in the bed, my question is do you see any problem towing a 30 ft 5er that is about 9000 lbs loaded with this drive train? All responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

RE: Snow Pictures from Oregon's Incliment Weather

Here is some real Oregon snow. Ofcourse, I live at a much higher elevation than Portland, 4300 feet. http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x130/f100jetmech/SnowJan82008011.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x130/f100jetmech/SnowJan82008008.jpg
