RE: Old Fella Rally Branson Missouri June 19-23, 2013

We have had a messed up haying season, equipment break downs and too much rain and not enough sun. We aren't done with getting our fields cut and baled, but it looks like it will continue with rain next week and no window to cut hay, so we should be able to make it. Probably, maybe... How's that for a definent plan.:D
Looking foreward to maybe seeing everyone!

RE: Anyone Full Time In A TC?

I have lived in TC's on 2 different occasions. both times were up in the mountains above San Diego. Once by myself while I built my house and the second time was my wife and I while we built another house.
Each time lasted about a year and I did fine by myself and We did fine together. But I was very happy to move into the houses.
this was in the 70's and the campers did not have all the essentials. on my own I got by with a rented porta-potty that doubled as my bath house for bucket showers and I had a small 'closet outside to keep my clothes in.
The second time since there were 2 of us we built 2 8x12 sheds, one was a bath house and one was a closet.Would we have been OK with just the camper? NO!!

RE: Swing bracket install help

Oops1 I sure thought it would support it.
but if i were putting it on my Dad's truck and it bottomed out and made funny noises I would quit also.
Glad you got it done. Now you can see how well that new truck handles it1

RE: Low Buck Dually Build

that's an encouraging post for people debating dumping their old trucks and buying new.
You put alot into it but not compared to a new truck.
It looks great , Happy camping with it.

RE: Swing bracket install help

I would have no problem putting a half ton under the front of it. It will handle that weight easily for just supporting the front.
and yeah take that picture.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

Sleepy,
Here in OZtralia, maximum legal width for all RV's is 2.5m/98inches.
Eagle Cap 1160 I want is 102" and weighs 4320ib dry.
So, 4" over width, here.
What is maximum legal width for RV's/Truck Campers in The US?
according to a list at Readybrake
most states allow up to 102" a few are only 8ft and Hawaii is 9ft

RE: What Would You Do?

when we got our diesel it was 2002 and our 87 f250 460 was not as reliable as it once was. After another problem that had the truck down for a week we decided to get another truck because our backup to the 87 had died (a 79).
DWs search was for a F250 or F350 stick shift SC LB 4x4 V10 or we could go with a diesel, DRW wasn't on our list.
We are farmers we haul very heavy loads a t times, in the bed and/or in the stock trailer, 16ft flatbed or 24ft GN flatbed.
She found the truck we have now and I decided we could live with the training wheels if the price was right. The dealer came down a long ways to meet our price.
We didn't know we would decide to start Truck camping again a few years later. Before we got the camper we were very impressed with the diesel and the DRW.
Much better stability. And then when we got the TC it was just perfect.
We still use the 87 to haul with when we have the camper on or for some reason the other truck is tied up. Also use it for our dirty work and it is the backup in case we have a breakdown.
We could live very well with a gas engine. But then we used to haul A camper and trailer a 6cyl and then a 283 and then a 360 and we went slow but were content.
The diesel puts a grin on my face every time we use it.But the gas can do any job it does, I won't go back to gas or SRW .

RE: What Would You Do?

our friends have a 04 6.0, they have had the typical problems with it and also a generator and high pressure oil pump.every fix seemed to cost from 3000 to 5000. They were lucky for the 1st 150,000 miles. No problems.
They don,t haul anything at all with it.
It's a Kingsranch and it's her daily driver. It now is pushing 300,000 miles.
They are still happy with it, in spit of the expensive repairs.
Her brother and nephew have had 6.0s in their loging bussiness and they ran them with chips but not until they bullet proofed them and then they had transmission failures.
If you could find a low mileage 7.3 you could switch to that.
I think if I were you I would take it to a really good independant diesel shop and run it by them and see what they would suggest It shouldn't be that big a mystery about the current problem.
Good luck

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

parking is more difficult in crowded lots.
The dual wheels can let a low or flat tire sneak by. you can't tell visually when it's low. You have to check pressures or at least thump them with a club or bar.

RE: '90 Chevy 1/2 Ton 305 V8

I had a 68 C10 sb 6cyl , 3sp that had coil springs.
I carried a lite 6 pack camper on it. It handled very badly. And then I added better shocks, sway bar, heavier tires, overload leaf springs and a 4sp with granny and it was much better. and I pulled a 5000 lb horse trailer behind it. It was probably less truck than yours and I used it for several years, Recommended? No! will it work? Yes!
Have fun and be careful.

RE: Which camper would work better for me

at that age condition and care have more to do with it than brand. Find out as much as you can about each one thru questions and pictures and then you need to actually see and touch each one unless one was eliminated already.
Good luck.

RE: New To TCs. Have A Few Questions

Hi and Welcome to our world.
We have a 1987 f250 460 4sp 4x4 with 411"s 8800 GVWR. The truck camper sheet that was in the glove box say's we can carry a 1930 lb camper. our truck came with the trailer/camper packages. Your 89 truck should have about the same ratings.
Tough decision to make. Would we keep our 4x4 and use it? knowing we might be overweight, probably.
Consider the age of your tires it might be time to replace them regardless of tread.
Have fun and good luck.
