Farewell

After 10 years of RV'ing, 8 years of solo Finally Fulltiming and lots of workamping, I'm now going to be Finally Fully Retired. It was a great experience & I'm glad I did it, but I think it's time to settle down. Have traded the RV for a car, bought a condo near the ocean in sunny Florida and am looking forward to a more leisure lifestyle. Many, many THANKS to all of you on this Forum who have helped me over the years. I've benefitted greatly, especially when first starting out, and have recommended the Forum to dozens of others. Keep up the good work.

RE: Sightseeing in a C w/no toad

Just completed 8 years fulltiming w/o a car - just a bicycle. Get a back pack for groceries, use buses & taxis when necessary. Otherwise, just drive the RV.

RE: Nat'l Park senior pass

In fact, it's an unbelievable bargain! How many millions of us old folks have these? At $10 or $20 for your lifetime? Here the government is (supposedly) searching for ways to increase income and reduce expenses when all they'd have to do is make the passes annual, so you would have to re-up every year. The personnel to make the sales are already in place, so the only cost would be printing new passes. Can't do the math, 'cause I don't know how many people, but I'm guessing the Parks Dept. is missing out on millions of $$/year.

RE: Fort Myers, FL Area Campgrounds

Traffic is very heavy in the Ft. Myers area - in fact, anywhere near the beaches. Look inland for quieter, smaller towns. Lehigh Acres, LaBelle maybe?

RE: As I sit here and read threads about

Hope that pic is not current & is not in Idaho - pretty chilly up that way? Looks very much like Anza-Borrego.

RE: mpg estimate?

You didn't mention length. My 1999 24' Itasca with the 350 averaged 10.5 over 3 years. Never less than 9, never over 12. Held it at 55-58 and 62 on interstates. Now have a 25' with the 450 frame and only get 8-9.

RE: Propane Refill Scam

Being in favor of menu-based pricing, I've always been amazed that propane filling stations don't charge for the filling itself. Most convenient for me back in NYS is a Uhaul store. If I'm just topping off the RV, the total might be as low as $20. It takes the person at least 20 minutes to walk out, perform the fill, walk back & ring up the sale. If he's making just $12/hour, that's $4 labor on top of the propane cost. More if you add taxes & benefits.

RE: The new Walmart

WM itself does not have restrictions - they are initiated by the community government or sometimes by the property owner (where WM leases the land). As noted above, likely other stores are quieter or perhaps more level.

RE: Durango, CO or Maggie Valley NC?

The Durango-Silverton train ride is the best I've found in the USA. T'were me, I'd go there, hands down.

RE: Tired of The Same Place

Don't understand why people say NOT Florida, but if that's your choice, my next best winter experience, weather wise, was in the RGV region of TX. Your best bet is to research the net, keeping in mind that: The further South you go, the warmer it gets. Sounds simple & obvious, but check out the temperature differences between Jacksonville & Miami in FL or Dallas & McAllen in TX. The further inland you go from coastal areas, the cheaper the rates (and generally less wind). In general, "Parks" and "Campgrounds" will tend to cater to more true "campers" than "Resorts", which tend to lean more toward long term RV'ers. Most Resorts feature lots of activities, both indoor and out. The longer you stay, the lower the rates. Finally, you'll never eliminate bugs, flys, insects, burrs and wind unless you want to stay in an underwater hotel.

RE: Tired of The Same Place

Lots of places like that exist! And they're all in Florida, like the one I'm in right now.

RE: He wants/She wants

10 years ago I bought my 1st RV and dealt with the he/she issues for about 9 months. Left the wife & the house and the RV & I hit the road. Haven't been back since. My bumper sticker reads: "My way AND the highway"

RE: 50 amp rig with 30 amp service

Trick is not to pull too many amps at the same time. Just to avoid issues, I'd run the fridge & water heater on propane. Maybe just turn the water heater on when you need it. If you're talking an electric space heater, it should run fine, even on Hi. My 30 amp rig will run 2 space heaters on Low, plus the fridge & the microwave for a short time. Turn 1 of the heaters on Hi & it pops the circuit breaker. But I think 50 amp rigs pull more amps for gauges, sensors, etc. so you may want to experiment a little.

RE: Ideas for New York state?

As 2hams said - WG, Sampson, most any CG in the Finger Lakes area for things to do & places to go. Letchworth for outdoor activities & "real" camping. Definitely bring the car.

RE: Easy Shrimp Pasta

Tried your version with the wine today, but still skipped the peppers. Much lighter and likely healthier than using butter, but - a bit too sweet for me. Next time I'll use a Chardonnay rather than a sweet white.

RE: Easy Shrimp Pasta

Been making a similar dish for years, but without the peppers and wine. Helpful when you can find the "tail off" shrimp. Sometimes I substitute frozen turkey meatballs for the shrimp. For a bit more taste, add a chicken bouillon cube or two to the pasta water. And I like whole grain angel hair. I've been using butter or margarine instead of the wine. White wine sounds like a healthier choice - can't wait to try it.

RE: Fort Pickens Info

Just an add-on to the above - the parking area & pavillion mentioned is very close to the Ranger Station & is on the Gulf, not the Bay side, where you likely want to be. And I believe it is Langdon beach.

RE: My beer can,my golf cart and me,,,

Down here where I'm staying in SW FL, rolling cocktail hour starts about noon & sometimes I'm suspicious about what's in some of those morning "coffee" cups. Don't have a cart myself but I sure watch out for them whenever I'm on the streets.

Maybe the extra $100 is for an RV?
