I hope this goes well for you; as a current Hallmark owner it does give me "pause". One thing you wrote grabs my attention, namely that the exterior panel was not attached to the wood frame. I thought that the walls were bonded together so that the different components worked together to give structural integrity. Is it possible that the moisture intrusion broke that bond?

I agree wholeheartedly with those who recommend caution. I have a 33" extension on which I "only" carry two bicycles, but when you consider the weight of the bikes, the bike rack, and the extension itself, suddenly I have doubled what I think I am carrying, and the leverage is immense. I try not to use the extension all the time and I frequently inspect the receiver.

I ... would truly like to understand the engineering advantages or likely disadvantages built in to the N/S overhead bunk for a pop up versus a hard sided camper.
The presence of the non supportive soft wall in a pop up must present the manufacturer with engineering and construction challenges to prevent failure at the cantilever. That of course was not the failure in my case, and might not be a pop up vs hard side issue at all.

Maybe you could post the pictures you took of this damage. ...Might help somebody else in the future.
Repair Pictures
Here's a link to the repairs. I think there is tremendous force applied to that part of the camper when you consider the mechanical advantage of the cantilever and adding weight past the fulcrum. I do believe there have been other camper manufacturers with the same problem, if I remember the conversations on the forum well enough.

What NS camper collapsed?
2006 Outfitter Apex 8; the front of the tub collapsed and the passenger side wing ended up on the truck box.

Having had a N/S camper and having had the cabover collapse, I would be hard pressed to buy another. But I sure wish our current camper had one - it's a great feature.

I hear you Mathew. We don't need it all - I was thinking about the very same thing this weekend. We were camping in a site that had electricity, the first time we did that this year, and the STUFF that people had brought with them was astounding. We were one little truck camper parked amongst the redwoods of the RV world. Funny thing though, it started to spit a little snow and everybody else was watching TV and we were sitting in front of a warm fire. There is a beauty in simplicity.

In my mind, an absolutely immaculate clean room with temperature & humidity regulation, with positive air pressure system needs to be employed for vacuum bonding a composite structure (whether a jet fighter composite structure, or an RV). Even the employees entering the room should be clothed in appropriate attire.
