RE: The elephant behind the palm tree...

I have been all over the country and parked in quite a few store parking lots and have parked the long way taking up 5 or more spots while the wife is shopping. I have never run across anyone that had a problem with me doing this.

RE: I-10 between Lafayette and Baton Rouge

Wow! You telling me they still haven’t fixed that road? I traveled I-10 from the west coast to the east coast in 2005 and that was the worst stretch the whole trip.

I did it in my 36 foot class A with car in tow. It is narrow in parts and some tight turns but I found it to be enjoyable.

RE: Dish Cable Connectors Hot?

There is voltage (18V I think) running through the cable to power the electronics in the dish. Wrapping it in electrical tape is not necessary but should do it no harm. I have never heard on one getting hot but suppose it is possible since there is current running through it, especially if a connection is a dirty or loose. Resistance in electricity causes heat.

RE: Replacing roof AC units

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I see no gain in replacing your airs. These things run forever. And no there is no difference between the ducted and non ducted units, they fit the same hole. In fact some coaches are wired to drop a third air in the crank up vent, same size hole.

RE: Rooftop A/C recharge??

All the above is correct. Also since there is no port there is really no place for the freon to leak out so most likely it doesn’t need recharging. You might have a 13,000 BTU unit in the front and a 15,000 BTU unit in the back. Not uncommon.

RE: Replacing carpet with Allure flooring

I am going to be doing the same thing soon. I can’t answer your question about the slide since I am not even sure how mine will come out but as far as mounting the furniture on the floor, I read that you should leave room around the mounts for expansion and contraction as you do along the walls.

RE: on the road tv reception

Directv is the worst company to deal with when it comes to satellite TV in an RV. They either don’t have a clue about satellite reception in an RV or the FCC has them by the B***S and they won’t commit to a straight answer. I have been told by one Directv phone support that all I have to do is give them the zip where I am at and they will switch the locals over, then another said that is not true and I will have to change my installation address on the account to get the new locals, and another told me I can not get any locals at all while traveling in an RV, while another told me I have to sign a waver and can only get nationwide locals from Los Angeles and/or Chicago, then another said it is not legal to take my receiver from home and put it in the RV. My advice would be to not get Directv support involved at all and just use the “over the air” antenna to pick up the local news.

RE: Campers interaction affected by bumperstickers/ decals?

I am proud of my service and display military stickers.I am also proud of my sons service to his country He is a Navy CPO and will retire in a few years.
Have had more than few comments with the USMC sticker and the Navy sticker.I have also had comments on the camper on a half ton truck

RE: Campers interaction affected by bumperstickers/ decals?

I really don't pay attention to bumper stickers unless they're humorous. Some stickers are leftovers from the previous owner of the rig.
Our policy is to be nice to everyone without letting them take advantage of us. We'll get along just fine as long you don't ask to "swap" campsites with me. That's a huge faux pas in the camping etiquette book.
Loved that license plate: "When hell freezes over we'll camp there too." Where can I get one?
Had it custom made.

I used to have a license plate frame that said, “When hell freezes over we’ll camp there too”. Turned out to be an icebreaker for a pastor that came over and talked to me.

RE: Problem with Heater

Sounds like it could be a stuck sail switch. There is a switch inside with a “sail” on it that senses air flow before it will turn on the gas. If the switch is stuck (dirt and dust) the system will not sense the air flow and turn on the gas. It will just blow cold air all day long.
Where can I find this switch? It isn't clearly marked or visibleSorry I am not sure where it would be located on your model.

RE: Gilroy to Petaluma through San Francisco

If you go that way stay on 280 until you come to Highway 35, exit 41 (aka Skyline Blvd).
Exit there and go north on 35 following it until you see Lake Merced on your right get into the left lane and follow the sign for the SF Zoo which is a left turn that puts you out at the beach on "the Great Highway".
Stay on the Great Highway for about 4 miles, you'll come to the "Cliff House" (on your left) as you curve right and climb up from the beach you're now on Geary Blvd.
At the top of the hill you might stop at a signal. Stay on Geary Blvd. as it veers to the left you're still on Geary and run a couple of miles to the general area of 23rd to 20th Avenues (cross streets) make a left turn where you find a left turn lane and go two blocks over to California St. and turn right.
Stay on California, when you cross 16th AVE you have two blocks before you hit "PARK PRESIDIO BLVD", best to get in the left lane again. At PARK PRESIDIO BLVD turn left and head out to the Golden Gate Bridge. You'll go up a grade and through a tunnel. I ran my old Winnebago Chieftain & toad and pulled my 34' Alpenlite through there many times. There's plenty of clearance in the tunnel, but if you don't feel comfortable move into the left lane. The lanes are kinda narrow but safe.
A little footnote; 280 is a 4 to 6 lane freeway from SJ to SF. I was raised on the SF Peninsula a long time ago and the street routes seem to have held together, they just go bigger.. If you have a paper version of the MAPQUEST ATLAS look in the California section around page 18 for a blow up of the SF Peninsula and you'll be able to see what I laid out for you above. Or go on line to MapQuest and enter "The Great Highway, San Francisco, Ca" and that will also give you the map I'm talking about.
Oh yeah, the tolls are only charged coming into San Francisco not going out.
Personally, I wouldn't run that East Bay freeway system on a bet as it's a zoo 24/7.
The best part is you'll get to see a beautiful part of SF that most people don't even know is there.
Enjoy Roger
I have gone the exact route you mentioned in the car so I am also familiar with it as well as the 19th avenue route I mentioned.
I know the tolls are leaving SF and not entering. We took a bus tour and the driver mentioned that fact. He said the reason is because they figure if you are leaving SF, they already got your money. I also did some research and found the tolls on the I-80 and I-680 bridges are northbound hence the Golden Gate route to avoid the tolls.
Like I said, I have been over the Golden Gate both directions in the motorhome with toad and did 19th ave both times with no problem. I was just wondering if I-80 or I-680 were worth the toll. After reading your statement “I wouldn't run that East Bay freeway system on a bet as it's a zoo 24/7”, I will do the I-260 route and probably do the 35 route since it’s a bit more scenic and I am not in a hurry.

Gilroy to Petaluma through San Francisco

36 foot motorhome with car in tow.
I am thinking of taking I-280 to 1 to 101 and over the golden gate rather than I-680 to avoid the tolls on the I-80 or I-680 bridges. What is your opinion?
I have gone this way before and know that 19th Avenue through San Francisco is tight but doable.
