RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

I think you need to do some reading of this thread to find out what you joined. Sound like a Senator that says you must pass the bill before you know what is in it. You might be barking up that same tree and not know what you are guarding and the stance of some companies on guns. Good luck...this is not for everyone for sure.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

They definitely could do a better job, but I'm sure it is in par with every one else. Not sure if you mean par with other LOMA sites or all Gate Guard companies. IT is NOT par with other GG Employers.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

:B Just thought I would say that on HWY 468 there has sure been a lot of FRAC and Drilling units going one way or the other. So there has to be new drilling and Fracing. Understand there are new gates all the time and some shortage of guards. Service has been top notch this Fall for me and get paid on time!!! LOMA has a few gates on Hwy 468 between Cotulla and Big Wells. Gate Guards LLC also have several sites and many other areas for both. Not aware of any other Co in this area. Seems there is a big pipeline going in South of 468 and they need GG also. So check out the companies and get to work!!!!:C

What does a light tower rent for per day or month? Is there a company site one can go to for rental prices?

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

We plan to go to work the end of this month or early Nov for GGS. Have been treated very well and some changes for the better have happened in the Western district to make all happier. Not saying other are not good or as good but we have worked for over two years with them and plan to stay. We do hope they up the daily rate but for the time being we will stay and just try and ask for more!!!

RE: Satellite equipment

I wanted the HOPPER from Dish and they wanted $100 for it and my 2 year contract was up!!!! So I called and put the "NEW" account in my wifes name and will cancel the contract that was up! They seemed happy and so am I. Since we were going South this month for the winter it worked out perfect!!! I ALSO get first year of the 2 year contract at $35 a month OFF and get Movie channels for 3 months FREE! Also got one HOPPER and one Joy Stick??? So they either want you to leave or do something like this to keep THEM happy. Sure cost me nothing to do it. It saved ME a lot of money. Guess many never try or figure it is not worth it. Some pay $3.99 for gas when across the street the cost is $3.69 So it takes all kinds...I am just the "cheapie"!

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

We thought that Satellite phones would be the answer. So we purchased from Pleasanton, TX dealer and they did not work and I lost my $200 deposit and they have the phones back. I was led to believe that since they did not work for us that we would get our $200 back. So be careful of whom you deal with. The dealer is very nice and I am sure good person but the company does not back him or maybe...You just be aware.

RE: BornFree ValVec Mirrors

:B YES, that is ME...I got the mirror fixed. Cost a total of $80!!! I took the mirror off the MH and then took the "shaft" off, has 4 cap screws, then took that part to a body shop with lathe and he was able to tool the spool and then fitted it down through the now drilled out center. Spot welded it to the bottom and now I had a new shaft and cut groove for the "spring" retainer to be pushed down over and lock the spring in place. Took a speedy bolt and put down the center of the shaft and put a nut on the lower side. There is an opening where the wire comes out of that is able to be use. Then put a large dia. pipe, short piece, over the spring retainer and then with the ready bolt or speedy bolt put on a nut that was turned tight till the pipe pushed the spring retainer down and it snapped into the groove. SO...it IS possible to fix the mirrors!!!!! Why they do not sell that spindle is, well, they do not have to and they make more selling mirrors. It is SO simple to compress the spring and set the spring retainer. That is what the company said could not be done! Save over $500 this way. :C :B

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

GGS have been with them for 2 years and none of the problems mentioned or listed. Gen was always working and serviced on regular basis. Sewage was pumped as requested...water delivered when nearly out. Pay always on time. Roger has been my contact and know with expansion of the oil business and the picking up of new gates that they are working many hours to keep up. When we return this Fall it is with the idea of still working for them. As for a single person on a gate....I do not know how that works...Not the norm but because of the need...there are people trying to man the gate being single person. Most of the "snowbirds" left...we left June 1st as planned. I know of a couple more that are leaving for the summer. Employment is good in TX Oil Field. Sorry some of you have had bad experiences with gates and GGS but I know of many that will return this Fall and Winter months.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Leathercrafter...so you got me to the new gate but I still had to drive and make at least 2 trips. What if you do not tow your other vehicle...like we drive a MH with a trailer behind it and a car to go to do the errands. You did not comment on the other possible outdcomes which working that close together for 2 years 24/7 could cause problems...I know of several wives that are not on the gate with the husband after only 6 to 9 months. So that does happen. Some people need a break. Some could do it...but a 2 year contract would sure stop me from doing it. So I put it out there as Food for Thought! We like the job but would only want to do it for 2 months and then a break. Maybe we are "odd" but talking to others I find this a more reasonable feeling than going for over even 1 year. What happens IF you have a family or medical emergency? Do you find your own replacement? Bottom line in my mind is to think that one over a lot before committing.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

I think "FEW" that want to sign a 2 year contract and work 7/24 for 2 years!!!! That is $80,000 each minus the gen..lights, bells, hoses, cords, septic tank and pumper cost and upkeep...and YOU have to move it all each time they move!!! NO THANK YOU>>>>it may look good but if you move 70 miles and have to make a trip for each item...WOW...and guard the new gate while the other one moves all the stuff!!! So IF they will do all those things for you...well, money might look good but what IF you break the 2 year contract. What IF it cost you your marriage, what will that cost each of you. JSHT of mine on that deal.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Thanks Texan for the info. Not being from TX I was not sure how it works here. We have the same sensors that you have the link to. Some of the problems I have had is IF you are close to the Hiway they will sometimes give false signal for the big trucks going by. Then sometimes the wind will set them off with moving branches or weeds. In the winter they worked the best. It is an option and not that expensive, and I put mine in a plastic bag to keep the moisture off so they would work on wet mornings. I would like a better setup but know it would cost more. We leave the bell outside and have started to double it on one end and single on the other. This way when they come in you get like 2 bells per axle and when leaving they only trip it once per axle. Just what I have experienced.

RE: Michelin LTX225/75/16 M/S2

I put 215/85/16 on mine. So I know they will put larger ones on and this was a BIG CHAIN store...Not a "CLUB". It corrected my speedo and I have been very happy with them. I do have a dually.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

When you are hired as employee or employees...does the income come to each person. Naturally if you are only one it would. But, if you are on a gate for 24/7 how are you paid as an individual different than if two people work it? Why could you not still get all the pay to one person like you are now Blondie and still keep your husband from showing income> Just do not understand how one is paid for 24/7 as an employee. What is the difference other than SS sharing and FICA? Is there a law in TX that anything over 8 hours a day is overtime or 40 hours a week? There just does not seem to be a BIG or ANY advantage to being an employee..vs the deductions and depreciation one can take as a contractor. Can someone explain it?

RE: Michelin LTX225/75/16 M/S2

Most of the time the "Clubs" have tires with their specs and never quite the same name tire even though it is a Uniroyal, Michelin or whatever. I know that WalMart in "Most cases" will not put other than an OEM size tire on your vehicle. You can take the rims in and have them mount any tire that will fit....and get the warranty and put the tires and rims back on your vehicle and you are set. I have had Big Dealers in tires increase the size of my tires after much measurement and eyeballing. So "reputable" is a hard word to define....just MHO.
