RE: Do Florida stores carry the pink antifreeze?

I made it up into lower Alabama and bought a couple gallons at a Walmart. Winterized in their parking lot and then continued on home.

RE: Need tips before leaving home.

I'd turn the water off at the main valve coming into the house. My parents and another family I know both had major water damage. My parents had a leak in the ice maker on the refrigerator and the other family had a leak.
My parents also have an inexpensive temperature monitoring system that calls their cell phone if it gets too low. It went off a couple weeks ago, and sure enough the furnace was not working. My brother had it serviced for them.

RE: FW full hookup vs preferred

What's the difference? Besides $50.
At Disney Fort Wilderness. Full hookups are W/E/S. Preferred include cable TV and might be a little bigger I think.

RE: Transmission Fluid Gritty Checked Cold

The bigger question is how does the fluid smell? A burnt smell is not good.
Check how the particles feel, are they hard? It might just be clutch disc wear, there are quite a few discs in a trans.
The transmission fluid color is like new and it does not smell burnt. The particles are pretty hard. Kind of feels like plastic. I'm guessing it floats to the top in the pan.
I thought it was interesting that both mine and my neighbors MH have it.

RV in Storage... MICE!

Just put the motorhome in storage a week ago, and when I checked today I had styrafoam coming out of a ceiling AC vent. Last time this happened it was a sign we had mice. Today I put Bounce fabric softener everywhere in vents, cabinets, etc. Is that going to do it or does anyone have a better solution?

Transmission Fluid Gritty Checked Cold

We have a 2006 motorhome built on a Ford F-53 chassis (gasser). I know not to check transmission fluid cold with engine off, but I pulled the dipstick to see how it looked. The fluid was a nice clean pink color as expected, but there were blackish gritty pieces on the dipstick. A friend of ours has the same year and chassis, so we checked his when cold too. We saw the same thing. We tried a magnet against the grit and it does not appear to be metalic. Both motorhomes have less than 20K miles. Is this normal or a problem? Anyone else have this? You might want to check.

RE: Miley Cyrus Bus Crash (she was not on it)

Cyrus as in Billy Ray Cyrus...or Rae, or whatever the spelling may be. Is not a Prevost an RV?
Thank you.
Yep, not only is a Prevost an RV but I'm pretty sure driving an RV down a highway is part of our lifestyle.
I am very safety concerned when driving my MH, and I'm always interested in what causes these terrible (fatal) accidents.

Who's Miley Cyrus?
She's a teen singer/tv star. Also known as Hannah Montana. Very popular with kids.

I was surprised not to see anything on RV.NET about this. One of Miley Cyrus' Prevost buses crashed. The driver was killed.

RE: pets in trailer

We barely even leave our 2 Brittany's alone at home for more than a couple hours. Same with when we are camping. They tend to get separation anxiety. Plus, we always want to be careful about power for AC and other things in campgrounds. And now, we even have parakeet that travels with us.

RE: 2010 Ford Edge

We just set up our 2007 Ford Edge as a dinghy this summer. First time we had anything behind our gas motorhome, and like the previous post, I can feel it a little back there too. Don't even notice it on flat grades. It towes great. Did 1,000 miles so far. Prior to the motorhome, I had a couple travel trailers, and never wanted to go back to the tension and white knuckle driving. Well, towing the dinghy is not that at all. Easy setup, including brake buddy.

RE: Ford Edge or Lincoln MKX Dinghy Question

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but I have to ask, why does the key have to be turned? Is it disable a locking pin in the steering wheel? Or is it for some other reason?
I have the Ford Edge in my gun-sights, the reason I asked.
Yes. To unlock the steering wheel and to be able to have the transmission in neutral.
Thanks to all the feedback received. I will set the key all the way back left after neutral. I'll check to make sure the Brake Buddy has power.

Ford Edge or Lincoln MKX Dinghy Question

I have my Ford Edge set up as a dinghy. The mechanic said put in neutral and leave the key in the first click clockwise accessory position and just make sure radio and other things are off. The owners manual states the same. I've heard people say their battery goes dead in a day. I saw posts on the Internet that say put it in neutral but leave key to the leftmost position.
Anybody out there with an Edge or MKX dinghy that can advise?

First Time Dinghy - Question on Braking

I've towed many travel trailer setups, but never a dinghy before. I have a V-10 Gas MH and a Ford Edge dinghy with brand new Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar and Brake Buddy with remote alert.
Everything sets up great. When I went for my demo drive with the mechanic who set it all up, I asked him why the remote alert doesn't show any braking going on by the Brake Buddy. He said, it's best to have it set up for only real hard stops or break aways, and the MH does all the normal braking. I read the instruction booklet today, and it says it should assist if over 15 mph.
So my question is, what sensitivity level should the Brake Buddy be set to, and should it assist during normal braking?

RE: Backup Camera Fixed Works Fine But Not In Reverse

Once again, I was the originator of this post, and now I have an update that I've completely fixed my backup camera system. For those of you that were skeptical about me saying I was 99.9% sure I wired everything back together properly, I did. My mistake ended up being at the back of the monitor under the dash. Stupid mistake, I had the connection in Camera 2 not Camera 1 and never noticed it. Camera 1 must be the one set up to work in reverse. So... Now my camera with sound works in all positions. I am a very happy camper!

RE: Leaving home winter checklist?

One item I'd strongly recommend is to turn the water off at the main valve.
My parents went south and came back after a month to see that the ice maker line on the refrig leaked and caused tons of water damage to floors and walls. Another family down the block experienced a similar problem during a one week vacation and had tons of boxes in the basement get wet.

Tow Bars, Brake Systems - Any good websites?

I am possibly getting ready to set up my 07 Ford Edge as a dinghy behind my motorhome. I have quotes from 2 dealers. One is Ox Blue and the other Road Master. This setup gets really expensive. Is there any good websites or resources for finding used equipment or really good deals on new?

Backup Camera Fixed Works Fine But Not In Reverse

How ironic is this. I fixed the backup camera on my motorhome (mice ate through the wire connections in the roof). Now it works great in park or any gear other than reverse. I'm almost 100% positive that I connected all the wires together properly. I did have to strip back and solder the harness back together. Any ideas?

RE: MH Backup Camera Not Working... - MICE!

I posted this thread about my backup camera not working and found that a mouse ate the connection between the backup camera cable and the cable running up to the monitor.
The manufacturer and a local RV shop both said it would cost me enough to probably file with insurance and that a new cable would need to be run from the monitor, thru the firewall, along the frame, and up to the camera.
As an update, this morning I removed the window trim around my back window, drilled a 1" hole up thru the plywood frame, and got lucky enough to feel the cable end very close to the hole I made. I fished it down along with the end of the camera wire, stripped, twisted and soldered the wires, taped it all up, and it works great. Cost... 1 hour. All the window trim is back together exactly as it was.
