RE: Digital Multimeters- An RVer's Best Friend

The most useful meter I've found is a clamp-on style ammeter. With a clamp-on meter you don't have to break a circuit to measure current. Most clamp-on meters will only measure AC current so you will have to spend a bit more for one capable of measuring DC. I spent $80 for the one I have. Sears sells a meter for about $60 that looks appealing.

Craftsman clamp-on
I use one of these also but I also have the cheap ones from Harbour freight that I have in every vehicle, every tool Box , every work bench and these are the ones I use all the time. At 5 bucks they are cheap enough but also very accurate that if someone needs one I just give them one.

RE: Shaw Satellite Service

I will share an email I received from Shaw Technical Service today which should answer your questions and it reads as follows:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your account; I am happy to assist you.
I would like to clear up some misconceptions regarding our services and the recent launch of our 3rd satellite. We believe that this rumor started as Bell also launched a new satellite this past year with a very limited footprint, and they changed a large majority of their current channels over to this new satellite. As such, they are no longer broadcasting past approximately the 45th parallel or Northern USA.
With the launch of our satellite, it will also have a limited foot print, but it is being launched to expand our ability to add new channels to our lineup. As far as we are aware at this time, we have no intention of moving our current channels to the new satellite. Our service will continue to work in Canada, the USA and parts of Mexico. We will still allow our "Snowbirds" the opportunity to watch TV at their winter homes or RV resorts in Florida, Arizona, and Mexico, etc, as we understand a large portion of our customers are in this sort of situation. You will still be able to access your programming while you are away. This is with the exception of any new channels that may be placed on the 3rd satellite (as the 3rd satellite's footprint will not service the USA/Mexico.) Any programming you are currently receiving will stay the same, just no new added channels
I hope this helps, but should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Please include any previous correspondence with your replies.
Thank you for choosing Shaw Direct

RE: Occasional Freeze Ups/Slowdown On Forum

Hey folks:
Is it just me or is someone else having occasional slowdowns or freeze ups on our forum?
Sometimes it is fast and other time it is soooo slow retrieving data and/or general operation.
My other websites/forums are fast, which leads me to think something might be wrong with our great forum.
Adjustments needed on my part perhaps?

RE: Shaw Satellite service

Gadget Guy
Where did you get your traveler and how much as it. Did you need to get a new receiver for it as well?
Was it worth the money?
I purchased it in Quartzite at Satelite Advantage (Paul). I had brought my receivers with me but he can supply them as well. I do know you can get the same system in Canada as well but the price was considerable cheaper in Quartzite. It was one of the best purchase I have made and certainly am very happy with it. I believe last winter he was selling them for around $1,800,00 including a new receiver.

RE: Is it warm enough

In a normal winter, is it warm enough in Jan/Feb to be comfortable to stay in your RV in Kerrville, Texas? Don't mind being in jeans or having to run the furnace some of the time, but not most of the time. We would like to take our motorcycle and have heard Kerrville/San Antonio area has some nice riding roads
We spent from the middle of Nov to middle of Jan in the hill country. The temperature was OK for us, could have certainely been warmer, but what we missed was the sun shine. Many days the fog would not lift until 11 or somedays not until 2 or 3. The bike riding was absolutely GREAT! The roads were the best with no truck traffic to contend with. The problem is that it has now completely spoiled me. Went to AZ from there and I just found it very uninteresting, dealing with straight roads, truck traffic and very limited options. RV parks are in abundance and very reasonable. The last one we stayed at was $200.00 for the month which included all utilities, how they made any money,I don't, because our heat was on the whole month. I would go back but I will not be able to convince DW in going back any time soon. If I could move the sunshine from AZ to the hill country or the roads from the hill country to AZ, that would be a bikers dream come true.

RE: solar panel

In most cases the solar panel that you have is there to charge the chassis battery and not the house battery which would seem to be what is happening in your case because you state the chassis battery is charged and the house battery is dead.

happy-2; that is 30 pounds of ice in 2 minutes, what a waste, ice works much better in a drink.

RE: I know stock tank sensors are worthless but..

And today it reads empty. Maybe it's simply condensation in the tank tripping the connection. Who knows. I do like the see level idea. Almost plug and play. Hate to do a mod like that on this coach though as I will probably trade it up in a year or so.
Easy to take it off when you sell your coach and install it in the new one. The unit is attached to the outside of the tanks. When I installed mine I did NOT glue them on, I just used duct tape on each side of the strip. Works great and I always have the correct level shown. When I sell my unit it will be very easy to take them off and reuse in a new unit. They are a great unit, designed and engineered in the Alberta Oil Patch, manufactured here in Alberta, Canada. That is most likely why they actually work.

RE: Advice Please on Auto Levelers

I don't have a leveling system but this thread has me thinking about something. Provided that the wheels are chocked securely to prevent rolling, would it be possible to change a tire (on any corner) using a leveling system without the need of a jack?
Yes, they do it in tire shops all the time.

RE: Satellites

Satellite recievers can't tell where you are. As long as the dish has line of sight to the sattelite, it will work. We've used the same reciever in two different homes for years.
WRONG, WRONG!! You live in the US and so yes your receivers will work anywhere in the US but if you are a Canadian and have a Bell Reciever it will NOT work south of about 100 miles from the border. Only the Shaw Direct Reciever will work south of the border if you want Canadian content.

Only Shaw Direct used to be Starchoice if you want Canadian programming which I assume you are asking.

RE: Canceling your 10 year permit changes!

Easier to get a NEW Passport so the permits don't show up in the future. I didn't even try to turn ours in when we sold the last rig. Maybe it will work for you!!??
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
This sounds like the right answer to me if the vehicle permit is tied to the Pasport number, a new Pasport and a new permit should work.

Vehicle permits

We have not been to mainland Mexico since 08 with our Motorhome. We are planning for next fall to return. My question is we travel with the coach, Goldwing motorcycle, truck as a toad with a 4 wheeler on the back of the truck. All of these units are street legal and licenced. Is it possible to get the required permits for all of the above?
Please NO comments about it not be safe to travel in Mexico.

RE: Yuma snowbirds

"Yuma is warm but it's pretty much a gravel pit....Yuma no saguaro cactus .... Casa Grande cactus and creosote bush galore".
I'll take the Colorado River, my citrus and pecan trees, and my lawn over cactus and creosote any day, ....but hey, to each his own.
Regards
Gemstone
That is the first time I have seen Yuma area described as a gravel pit. From what I have seen Yuma is surrounded by about 60 percent of the best farm land you can find and the rest is sandy dessert. You have to go out to the foothills to find any gravel pits.

RE: Bladder tank

I have had one for about 10 years and have used it in all different situations. I do use a moving blanket to protect it. It will conform to any space you put it it. Mine is a 40 gallon unit. Much better than a barrel, tank or other fixed sized unit. When it is not in use I store it in a plastic container with the pump, hose and blanket.

RE: Canadian car insurance

If you live in Alberta it would not make sense to leave a car down here year to year and pay Alberta Private insurance. Cheaper to get insurance in AZ. Now if you live in a province with government insurance that may well be a different cost and I would not know. As far as if it is legal with your insurance, you should check with your agent, because every insurance company is different and you should get this type of answer from the crooks themselves.
