RE: 5.5kw Onan genset in my 2011 toy hauler belt broke

Make sure they replace the idler pulley along with the belt JimL

RE: Generac Genset Issue

Eliminating the resister could over amp circuit/s in the regulator or the control board and wipe them out. Be careful. JimL

RE: Generac Genset Issue

How about cleaning the brushes and slip rings first?? JimL

RE: 5.5HGJAB-1038D Onan Generator

Could be a bad voltage regulator. What are you calling the "control module"?? the control board or the regulator? The 117 and 110 voltages could be from the field flash circuit. JimL

RE: Onan Microquiet 4000 running issues

It is also possible that the choke linkage is overcenter from it's normal position. Check the service manual picture. JimL

RE: Entry Step Reinforcement

I found a Honda car jack in a junk yard and bolted it to the underside of our bottom step. Arriving a campground or home, setup the trailer and then extend the jack to the ground on the screw. Problem solved for a dollar. JimL

RE: Battery on whole house generator

I've got a 20 kw home standby LP generator. The printed circuit board in the unit has a maintainer circuit in that it comes on for 5 minutes every couple of hours for 5 or 10 minutes. Been working fine since hurricane Floyd in the early 90's. JimL

RE: Onan KV 2.8 Microlite

Next time you are in the Myrtle Beach SC area send me a pm and we'll arrange to meet. Don't plan on coming this spring as I'm still battling bladder cancer with chemo and radiation, not to mention lots cystos and bi-opsey's. We are planning on being in Newport, RI this October for nieces wedding. hopefully, we will make it. JimL

RE: Onan KV 2.8 Microlite

It is a voltage regulating capacitor. ONAN part number 0300-4329, PCB Assy capacitor. It is used in various gensets and evidently the loose wire is not used in your setup. If you can get a wiring diagram, check the wire number that is almost readable and check it against the diagram. Don't mess with it. It is not a spring chicken and the printed circuit board may break if twisted or abused. The wires on the capacitor should go to the wiring harness for the voltage regulator as a separate circuit to buffer the SCR outputs (as I remember, but then I'm getting older by the day). JimL

RE: generac question

To stop the unit, the Generac board shuts off the 12 v power to the fuel solenoid and the ignition gets grounded. See if you can trace the solenoid wiring and see what safety items are connected to it. JimL

RE: generac question

There is a regulator that is on the generator at the fuel inlet pipe. It takes the low pressure LP from the bottle and conditions it for the demand regulator that feeds the carbruetor. Generac boards are known to go bad. Some are exposed to the weather and others are in a heat zone on the geneset. They go bad about as fast at the other brands. Go to Generac.com and click over to the SERVICE manual section and download yours. JimL

RE: generac question

Some Generac units had liquid LP withdrawal and would precipitate oil out of the liquid propane at the point of vaporization. You may find a pipe cap type drain in the vicinity of the gas solenoid where fuel enters the generator set. Turn the bottle off first and be careful, the stuff STINKS. JimL

RE: Changing spark plugs in genset

If your hands are not too oversize, you can remove the air filter and reach behind it with a plug socket and ratchet. Once loose, remove ratchet and turn socket with fingers. JimL

RE: Installing a Generator

I would carefully check that 20 year old wiring and the transfer switch. Also recommend a horizontal LP tank rather than vertical due to freezing during winter operations. During that time frame, generator manufacturers wanted to sell to all the major camper manufacturers so they made the generator mounting footprints the same or very close to the same. For example the ONAN Emerald and the KOHLER Confidant had identical mountings right down to the remote plug. Have fun. JimL

RE: Onan 6.5 Generator Issues

Dan That thing was built in February of 88, almost anything can be wrong. Try the simple things first. Unplug the fuel pump and see if the voltage is higher. Trace wire from pump about 5 inches and find plug. Then unbolt the choke heater wires (plastic cover, 2 wires, under air filter adapter) Is the voltage pulsing on the negative side of the coil toward ground?? Those coils tended to crack at the top in the plastic filler area and at the bottom they could crack at the center and allow moisture into the coil. To check the electronic ignition, you really need the service manual. While the test procedure is straight forward, replacing the module and the ignition rotor under it can be a checklist type job. JimL

RE: Onan 6.5 Generator Issues

I believe the D model had electronic ignition. If no points at top center of genset do the followinig: Dc voltmeter from coil + to ground. Should be about 12 v when cranking. Choke heater and fuel pump are on same circuit. DC voltmeter from coil - to ground. Should be pulsing 0-9 vdc when cranking. Check coil continuity first if readings are not as above. If no pulse, obtain service manual and CAREFULLY read section on changing electonic ignition module and/or ignition rotor. Decide if you have the capability to do job before diving in. Good Troubleshooting JimL

RE: onan 5500kw commercial power (need help)

We need to know the complete model and serial number of your unit. ONAN makes both RV and Commercial gensets. The commercial units may or may not be capable of 120/240 volts. The RV 5500 watt units are dual 120 volts output with 0 volts between the two black wires. Until we know these numbers, everybody is just guessing at your problem. We want to help, but you have to help us help you. JimL

RE: Onan generator backfires

Backfiring can be caused by over tight/leaking valves or a broken timing key on the flywheel. Overtight valves can be checked by removing the valve cover and checking the clearance with feeler gages. The flywheel timing key is tiny. You could fit 6 on your little fingernail. It will require the removal and disassembly of the rear of the generator to access it. It sometimes shears due to shutting down under load with its consequence sudden stop. You might also check the vent tube on the secondary regulator. Bugs sometime plug it up. Get a service manual and follow it closely. LP engines don't varnish. JimL

RE: Onan GenSet won't stay running

As long as the throttle rod is attached to the governor actuator, the problem is usually the governor controller box located under the generator assembly. It has two or three polarized plugs on it and a new one can be temporarily installed by just plugging it in. JimL
