RE: Jacks down while camping with camper still on truck?

In the mountains while the camper is on the truck I always put the jacks down for added stabilization . With all the wind from the snowstorms the jacks are a big help in keeping the camper motion to a minimum.

RE: Is the aisin trans good enough?

I believe the Aisin and the Allison were developed jointly so some of the parts may be similar. The Aisin was previously only available (as fas as Dodge goes) on the Ram 4500 & 5500 and now with the high output 3500.

Hmmmmm a 5.9 and a 6.7 and the 6.7 gets better fuel mileage then the 5.9??????? Yeah let me talk that over with the Easter Bunny first..... It may not be a big difference but no way the 6.7 out does a 5.9 My old 5.9 with 4.10 got 12-13 mpg towing my 5er and now my 6.7 dually with 3.73 only get 10-11 mpg towing the same trailer...A lot worse empty.....Now let me put a tuner on it I may get back up to 12-13 mpg with more hp and no black smoke... A few of the kids roll the coal and they are the ones everyone remembers. But they are kids. Back in the day it was glass packs and big wide tires and cut outs...today it's tuners and laptops.
Ok, I understand your reasoning, however, as in my case too you will generally get better mileage with 4.10 axle towing a heavy load. The engine doesn't have to work as hard. Was yours 5.9 a 12V or 24V? The 12V was great on mileage and performance for their day. As far as performance goes I'll take the 6.7 over the 5.9 24V especially in the mountains.
Two winters ago my friend and I both carried our campers down to Mt. Bachelor in Bend, OR from Yakima, WA. He has a 1998 12V and me the 2011 6.7, our campers are about the same size and weight. His truck is extended cab 4x4 2500 with 4.10 axle and mine is in my sig. On flatland he could keep up with me, in the mountains forget about it. No comparison! Yes, he did get better mileage than me and my truck only had about 6,000 miles on it so she wasn't even broke in.

Going back to the EPA, I am not endorsing or approving of all of the things that the EPA has done over the years. But on the other hand, if you didn't have something like the EPA, the air we collectively breath, the water we drink, and a lot of other fundamental things in life that are easy to take for granted could be a LOT worse for ourselves, our children, and our families. Take a look at what is currently happening in China & Beijing as an example of a totally unregulated environment where anything goes.
The EPA is not the greatest that's for sure , neither are any of the other government agencies . Folks seem to forget what it was like in " the good old days ". Many of our rivers and waterways were sewers . Our cars and trucks got 10-12 MPG . No one had a clue how to deal with our industrial waste . Almost no recycling except metal . As you said , something is better than nothing . Without getting political I'll stop there .
How true!! Most of us are campers and enjoy clean air, pristine streams or rivers for fishing or rafting plus clean lakes for the same. Whether you like the EPA or not they are doing the job of keeping our country as clean as it can be.
I certainly would enjoy better fuel mileage, but at what cost. Doing a delete and tuner for a Ram truck costs $1500 and up and I figure it would take approximately 40,000 miles or more to break even on that. Now lets not forget that the tuner and delete voids much of your drivetrain warranty so if your tranny quits you are now on the hook for how much? Thousands! What about turbos, injectors, differentials, transfer cases and the engine itself?
I read a Dodge Diesel Forum and find it amusing that most of the posters that have the above problems are deleted and tuned. So how many more thousands are these people out? Yeah, but they sure can roll coal and look real cool as they beat up their $40,000 to $60,000 trucks. That rolling coal also dirties up those nuts in a sack hanging off their hitch too : and lets not forget the big fine if you are inspected and found to be missing emissions equipment.
The present 6.7L Cummins engine is designed to run (minimum) 350,000 miles with all that EPA equipment attached including all that soot in the oil. That is a lot of miles and if you take better care of your vehicle than the average Joe you could go much further than that. The only modification I have done is add a bypass filter to help keep my oil cleaner, thats it! I spent too much money on my truck to mess with the factory design. Yes, there were some big problems with the 2007 and 2008 6.7L Cummins, however, the newer 6.7L is much more reliable. So far it has been as reliable as my 2001 Cummins and almost as good on fuel.
My 2001 Dodge 5.9L Cummins 2500 auto was a quad cab 4x4 with a 3.54 axle. Highway mileage empty wast about 17-19 mpg and I generally did the speed limit. With the camper on I got anywhere from 9-11 mpg on the highway doing no more than 65 mph. Now my 2011 Dodge 6.7L Cummins 3500 DWR auto with DPF is a crew cab 4x4 with a 4.10 axle. Yes, the empty highway mileage is less than my 2001, I get 14 to 16 mpg, but remember this is a bigger truck with DRW and lower gearing so lower highway mileage should be expected. With my camper on I get 9.5-11.5 highway mpg doing no more than 65, ok maybe 70 at times. So with the camper on this DPF truck I actually get a touch better mileage and have a metric butt ton more power. So why would I want to delete, what would I gain? Looks like the gain wouldn't outweigh the cost.

Rare to see that in a camper, but was an option for some from the factory. You would have to rip your roof apart to do that now.

Nice camper, but for a 10 foot floor length basement model I find the holding tanks a bit small compared to some other campers on the market. If you boon-dock often the gray tank could be too small.
Only one 30 pound propane tank, just isn't sufficient for any winter time camping. I full time off the grid at a ski area during the winter, this camper unfortunately wouldn't cut the mustard.

The commodes are a little smaller than at home, but is sure nicer than what I had on various nuclear powered submarines. I really appreciate the heater duct that blows directly on whoever is seated on the throne.
Yes, they could be better, but you are camping. The alternatives are not so good.

Glad you enjoyed Alpental, I've camped there for their Cinco De Mayo celebration. Have you considered White Pass? The new RV lot is fairly level, family friendly, free, ski in and out and fires are allowed if in a stove or something similar. Most people forget about White Pass because they think it is just some small podunk ski area when in fact White Pass is about the same size at Stevens and has more vertical. The tree skiing in the expansion is awesome as is the new mid-mountain lodge.
White Pass is a family mountain plus lift tickets are cheaper than Crystal or Stevens. White Pass is a gem.

If you camp in the winter, insulate insulate insulate. Your camper is built as most are, I used latex foam on those areas you are looking at and around all access compartment doors. My waterlines under the cabinets and bathroom sink are insulated, waterlines that run with the heater ducting are not.

Another one I would look at is the Eagle Cap 1165, a bit heavy but so are the Lance and Chalet. They are all good campers, but the EC has a full front fiberglass cap and a 3 year warranty on the rig.

Guess I am a lucky one since I work at a ski area, live in my camper and have a locker to store my 3 sets of skis, however, when traveling to other ski areas my camper has a pullout tray under the door that can hold one pair of skis (2 if I really try). If I am traveling with more than one pair of skis I just put them on my bed and sleep with them or put them in the backseat of the crew-cab. Not many options with a camper and skis. If you have a dry bath then the shower is an option.
I have seen a homemade box mounted on the camper bumper and back outside wall with a hasp and padlock. That might be your best option.

In Washington State all vehicles are required to have chains/cable chains while traveling through the mountain passes during winter.
Thermal windows are good, but the metal frames sweat and frost if really cold. I have not been impressed by thermal windows, still way too cold. I block foam and reflectix my thermal windows for the winter.
Don't over think on the truck and tires. It's not rocket science and truckers do that kind of travel all the time in the winter using highway tires and without 4WD. I've been doing the skiing and camper thing since 2003 at White Pass, Washington. First started out with SRW now DRW and never an issue even on compact snow and ice. Did use chains once coming down the mountain on my SRW truck in 2004.
Crystal Mountain does have some sites with power, but it's going to cost you $25 or more per night. They also charge just to camp in their lot as does Steven's Pass.

Mike740ski, try White Pass sometime, we are camper friendly as in we don't charge and the RV lot is fairly level. Skiing is good also especially with the 750 acre expansion put in 2 years ago. Usually a family friendly party on Friday or Saturday night.

Mike, I have lived in my camper at White Pass ski area for the past 6 years. Don't fret too much over the tires, almost any good mud and snow rated tire will do. I have those poorly rated OE Generals on my Dodge and they have performed flawlessly even in blizzards where chains were required except for 4WD vehicles. Needless to say I have never used the chains on my dually.
According to the WSDOT you are only required to use chains on the outside tire of the rear duals. Chains on the front are not required.
I would be more concerned about the camper, those 4 season options are only minimal at keeping your camper warm. Reflectix, block foam and pipe insulation have become my good friends. I can camp in my Eagle Cap in sub-zero (F) temps and still take a nice hot shower in the AM. Good batteries and a good generator are a must!!!!
