RE: Alaska advice for someone who's never been there

You are aware that the only way to drive from Haines to just about anywhere else in Alaska means you'll have to drive into Canada and go up the Alaska Hwy aren't you? Considering the distance you'd have still have to drive, I don't think you're allowing for enough time... JMHO

RE: Mass DRC (State Parks) Email Warning

I tried to book a site at Wells SP in Sturbridge a few years back, managed to find a couple suitable sites, but almost everything was booked solid. When I got there (stayed a week) the place was nearly empty, Rangers said the sites were all reserved with "no shows" apparently.

RE: Beachfront Camping

Cape Hatteras could be an option too, there is Ocean Waves, Camp Hatteras, and KOA, all 3 are right on the beach just behind the dunes with direct pedestrian access to the beach. National Park Service has a few campgrounds on the beach too, but those are dry camping...

RE: MICH > W. VIRG > VIRG > NC > TN - Rookie

They hold Bass tournements at Kerr Reservior on the Va-NC state line right off I-85, great waterfront COE campground called North Bend Park is about 11 miles from the interstate, most of the sites are waterfront, I'd recommend Loop-C as I think it's the nicest of the 4 Loops. Water & electric only, great campround...

RE: MICH > W. VIRG > VIRG > NC > TN - Rookie

I'm in the Williamsburg area, and can offer the following for you. Campgrounds there are plenty of, most popular seems to be American Heritage Campground, pretty nice and it's clean, if you like it more rustic then Newport News Park or Chippolks Plantation SP (kids will love the free Ferry ride across the James River). Most people tend to avoid Anvil Campground due to the CSX train tracks run up beside the campsites.
No shortage of stuff to do here, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown contain huge amounts of history and historic things to explore, when the kids get bored there is Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Air & Space Museum and more. Virginia Beach Resort area is about an hour away too, so a day at the beach is always possible too, lots of things to do in VB as well...

There are waterfront, but there is small elevation to the site from the beach.

RE: North Bend COE- VA

Sites are NOT lake level, you'll have to go down to the lake level (about 15-20 drop-off behind the campsites. Most site's have their own path down to the lake. If you can get C184 then I would jump on that one, it's a great site. I'm rather partial to Loop-C as it seems nicer to me than the others, brand new bath & shower house. I was in C180 last time there, the site was pretty good but really tough backing a trailer into that one between the tree's at the site entrance. My picks would be C182 and C184 as the best of the bunch...

RE: Camp Hatteras N. Carolina Outer Banks

Some great surf fishing down there too, you can do some of right from the campground, but the best spots are a little off the beaten path. If you have a 4x4 and you're willing to pay for a permit, you can drive out onto the beach in designated area's for some great surf fishing. Oh, salt water fishing license is also required.

RE: looking for campground that allows more than 6 people

The extra site will take care of the extra people and extra vehicle fee's, as well as provide parking space for that extra vehicle. Pitch a tent on the extra site so that it "appears" to be occupied... Park rangers & campground owners won't go around peeking in the windows to do a head count while you are sleeping...

RE: Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall

Watch your dates, and one of the best resources I had with foliage times was on weather.com... I'm originally from New England and figured since the leaves turned up there leading up to Columbus Day weekend, down here it would happen a little later. I've had real disappointment after waiting until the 3rd weekend of October to visit the Blue Ridge just to find out I was behind peak times. I think close to Columbus day is going to be your best color. I know NC mountains are further south, but they are at generally higher elevations so that has to be taken into account too...

RE: Campgrounds in Savannah GA, Williamburg VA and Gettysburg PA

I'm amazed at how many people see your post but don't actually pay attention to what you said. I see all these people suggesting American Hertiage RV Park in Williamsburg, which is a nice FHU campground to be sure. But you mentioned 2 things that got my attention, one is you're on a Civil War History, and the other that you prefer more secluded campgrouds.
With that in mind for Williamsburg, I would suggest you consider Newport News Park & Campground, it's a huge municiple Campground with 5 loops, very well spaced, and well shaded, with many water front sites. The park sits right on the Newport News & Williamsburg city line.

The campground also is home to a Civil War Battlefield, that runs right through the center of Loop-C. The Ramparts are still there though over grown with tree's. It was known as the battle of Dam #1...

This park is water & electric only, you'll have to use the dump station to off-load. If you want sewer, cable & WiFi then I'll agree that American Heritage would be the place to go. Be advised they do kind of squeeze you in there. Just offering you an alternative to what the others are telling you. Depite the campground being waterfont, they don't have any swimming there, but Watercountry USA is right up the street.

Very hard, when the phone is in NC and they are wintering in Florida...

RE: OBX Cape Hatteras KOA in late June?

Having been going down there for years, my experience has been it's generally too windy for the Skeeters. That being said, there are times when it is relatively calm and they will be out. Overall I get less bug problems there than I do when camping in wooded areas...

RE: Mid-Atlantic Beach Camping- Summer '13

You mentioned Va Beach, but there are no campgrounds directly on the beach in Va Beach. The closest thing you'll find is First Landing SP which is located just inside the mouth to the Chesapeake Bay, very nice campground too. There are some commercial CG's in Va Beach but none of them are ocean front.

RE: Shenandoah National Park Campgrounds

As much as I like Loft Mountain and the mountain top camping, every time I've stayed there I was annyoed by generator use. With that in mind, I would have to second the idea of Sherando Lake mentioned in the post above this one. Great campground, very quiet, easy access to both Shenandoah NP/Skyline Dr, as well as the whole northern end of the BRP. Electric hook-ups and a nice swimming beach as well....

RE: campground suggestion, northeastern North Carolina

This one is a little further north than you were looking for, but just 11 miles west of I-85 from South Hill Va is a wonderful Army COE campground called North Bend Park. Fair warning, if you stop here, you may want to stay for a few days!! This is just north of the NC state line...

RE: Short-term RV storage near Williamsburg/Norfolk?

I believe Newport News Park & Campground also has trailer storage. I know for a fact Chespeake Campground has an expansive storage area, I last used that a couple years ago and it was $30 per month then, not sure what they charge now.
