RE: GREAT ALASKAN HOLIDAY SPRING ADVENTURE 2013 IOWA/ALASKA

I had forgotten the pizza place - but their number was on our table when we got in the RV, so easy to get in touch with them.

Can't help you on either of those questions. Location is across the road from the Winnebago factory.

RE: GREAT ALASKAN HOLIDAY SPRING ADVENTURE 2013 IOWA/ALASKA

I took us a couple MW meals for that first night, but I don't think we ate them in all the excitement. No transportation available to go get something. Last year the lodge there was open for supper, but you can't count on it. Also, there's a convenience store about a block away.
I think the buses are scheduled to leave at 5, and supposedly they won't wait on you. But ours waited and waited last time so that we didn't get to Forrest City until 9:00 - time to make the bed and get some sleep!

We did it in May and LOVED every minute of it! I know we saw over 20 bears that day. For a first hand report, check out May 17th and 18th at www.mytripjournal.com/cjnky

Don't worry about those tv's falling off the wall jstrips - they had enough problems that year that I'm quite sure they came up with a better solution!

The only levelers are some blocks of wood they provide.
SkiCruiser will be your expert on cell service because she also had to keep in contact with work on her previous trips. We only used cell phone in AK where our Tracfone worked the best.
Chemicals are furnished.
Have you gone to mytripjournal.com? I found it very easy to use, and a great place to read the reviews of others. If you want to read more journals, check these out: http://www.mytripjournal.com/travel-United_States-Alaska

RE: What size RV to rent in Alaska?

alaskan-rver - those are excellent suggestions, but just a FYI - all GAH rentals have a generator. (also they do allow some unpaved roads, with retrictions)

RE: Too Early For Alaska 2013??

We've gone twice in that time frame, and have loved it!! Took AK Hwy one of those times, and Cassiar the other - and had fabulous wildlife sightings both times, and lots of snow made the scenery even more beautiful with all roads clear. Have a great trip!!

RE: What size RV to rent in Alaska?

We have a 35' Class A, but our first trip to AK we rented a 24' from Great Alaskan Holidays, which you will find have the most positive reviews for AK rentals. Problem with the 24' was that I really didn't like climbing into the overhead bed! The next trip we had a 26' which was better, but trip #3 was a 28' which was absolutely perfect for bed space, and ease of parking and getting around. All Fred Myers stores in AK (as far as I know) will let you park in their lot - and they have free dumps!! Some Walmarts do not allow RV parking. However, in AK you can find some fabulous parking spots away from any crowds!

RE: GREAT ALASKAN HOLIDAY SPRING ADVENTURE 2013 IOWA/ALASKA

SkiCruiser - what are the musts that we need to advise these newbies on the GAH trip to pick up at the local grocery store near the Winnebago factory? I was thinking today about how wonderful their sausage is! Wasn't there something else we made sure we stopped there to get? (And I sure do agree with you about the great info we've gotten from Sue.t - as well as Murray!)

RE: Planning 2nd RV trip to Alaska via Cassiar - HELP

We had a fantastic trip across the Cassiar last part of May last year with 25 bears sightings in one day! The BUS in Hyder wasn't open yet for the season when we went through, but had a wonderful chat with the owner. Hyder is definitely a great side trip.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

It's obvious it's strictly "different strokes for different folks" For example, we LOVED the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Allow time to watch their entertainment as well as wander the grounds. Our other favorites on the trip are Banff and Jasper national parks - especially driving the Icefield Parkway there. Take the Alaska Highway one direction with stops at Liard Hot Springs and Watson Lake signpost forest, but don't miss the beautiful Cassiar highway one direction. Sidetrips to Hyder, Skagway and Haines are all very worthwhile (with the possibility of taking the ferry from Skagway to Haines) Dawson City is a very interesting town, and the Top of the World Highway is a gem! The drive across the Denali Highway from Paxson to Cantwell (or reverse) is definitely something we will do again on future trips. Our favorite campground is the Seward City Campground, with the Fishing Hole in Homer coming in a close second. Both are right on the water with great views and sea creatures to watch. We also loved all 3 campgrounds in Denali National Park. One of our very favorite things from our trips was the visit to Barrow, where you see a very different AK than you will see in Fairbanks south.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Another resource you may all want to check out are the forums on tripadvisor.com - I got lots of help there in their Alaska forum as well as the forums for the various Canadian provinces. The trip reports posted there were priceless in my planning for our trips for giving me ideas of what we really wanted to do.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

It is great campground, but no hookups and has a few spots that will take a camper up to 40'. The overflow area across the road may take larger units, but I can't remember that part well enough to say for sure.

RE: TOW highway

Sue, they allow it on certain ones. You can't drive the TOW if you rent in AK, but they allow it on the delivery rental. We were also legal on the Denali Highway.

RE: TOW highway

Last year we arrived in Dawson City on May 20th, and found out the TOW would not open for 2 more days, so that gave us extra time in Dawson City.If you really want to do the TOW, and have the RV rented for long enough, you can easily take that long to get there. Of course, there would still be the gamble that it wouldn't be open yet!
