RE: Retired?!?!?!

Another military guy here with nearly 23 years in.
I could retire, but will continue working as an active duty guy (or a Army / Contractor civilian) until my youngest is 20.
Still having fun--traveling and shooting also...

Veebyes, sorry for your loss--I have a simular rig in size--definatly give us pause for thought in windy conditions.
Those pictures should be made into a sticky for those that ask if they can ride in the back of a fiver while moving...

RE: Best age for Disneyworld

We bought a annual pass to DisneyLAND when my daughters were 3 and 5 when we moved to California and true, the girls enjoyed their times down there but could become overwhelmed by the crowds, waiting times, and ride closures.
Just a couple of months ago, we got a chance to sneak in for a 3 day visit and I saw a marked differance in my daughters attitude being 2 years older. At 5 and 7, they really seemed to get "more" out of the experiance.

RE: Stealth bomber

The unmanned technology is why I think the F-22 production was stopped at 200. The next generation will be flown by highly skilled video gamers playing Ender's Game without the casualties. The planes will be a lot cheaper too, as well as unlimited in terms of the g's they can pull, and they will carry a lot more stuff where the pilot used to be.
While I appreciate technology...I worry about it too! Just hope no-one ever develops the technology to "Jam" the unmanned fighters, or worse yet, spoof the technology and use our equipment on us.
I would feel MUCH better with REAL people above me pulling triggers...

RE: Dealing with aging mother

This post and the stories people are sharing is the reason I am purposely building a room (ground floor, seperate bath, no stairs) in our new home for my father. He will always have a choice where he wants to live--but that is my goal--giving him a CHOICE--his home, another sibling, my home, or a combination of the three.
I couldn't live with myself if he were left alone...

RE: Home sites--50 amp question

Thanks all for the advise, websites, and suggestions. I will most likely put our rig "relatively" close to the house (50-75 feet), near a "grilling porch" and an external fireplace. The idea is that the RV will serve as the "Guest House" when we have visitors that can't stay in the spare room.
Right now there is nothing but trees on the land and the builder is VERY willing to put in all I ask for upfront--so I don't have to work around driveways, grass, sewer lines and such.

Home sites--50 amp question

Thanks for reading this.
I am in the process of leaving our life as full-timers and moving back into a stick house. I am in the process of buying land and working with a builder to construct the new custom built home.
Since we are avid RVers (who on this forum isn't?), I thought why not get a "home site" built now, so that we when we move from California to North Carolina, we can stay on our property and watch (supervise) the construction of the home.
The builder liked the idea and didn't see a problem--sewer will be done first, power will have to be present to construct the house and we are digging a well--alls well so far, here is the question.
Where can I point him to the EXACT specifications for our 50 amp service? Is it 220? 110? Where can I buy a "Campground" hookup box?
I am thinking of having him wire a 50, 30, and a couple of standard outlets so that when my OTHER RVing friends stop by, they can hook up depending on their needs.

RE: tall 5er

what do you tall guys do about some of the local approach roads leading into some of these out of the way campgrounds
VERY carefully. I tend to do a lot of walking before driving in areas I am unfamiliar with. I haven't had a problem but here's crossing my fingers.

We have both and LOVE the units. We can use both simultanously when we are hooked up to 50 AMP service--for our money and effort we reccomend them.

RE: Mesa Verde - Tickets to Tours & Suggestions for Self-Guided

I believe the Spruce Tree Ruins are the only "self guided" tours available. That said, there is a Ranger there and they do prevent you from actually entering the ruins. You can see them from about 25-50 feet away and do some limited climbing. We did that, and walked petroglyph point trail for a mornings activity.

RE: Sequoia & Kings Canyon

Wonderful park--lots of bear sightings. Our family saw 12 bears in 3 days along the trails. Great idea to pack a lunch and eat it on the trail.
Be sure to climb Moro Rock and nearby hanging rock, get a picture of your vehicle going through the tunnel tree, tour Boyden cavern, hike crescent meadow, visit Tharp log home, and of course visit the largest living thing--the Sherman tree!
Really an awesome park!

RE: Pirates - Don't mess with American Cargo ships!!!

It might be cheaper just to arm the crews...I would suspect a fair number of commercial sailors wouldn't have a problem picking up a weapon.
That said, I do know a fair number of guys that would be GLAD to take a couple of cruises a year if they were paid a decent salary.

RE: 5vr Front License Plate

I would tell the DMV a Fifth Wheel is NOT a vehicle--it is a trailer, there is no requirement for front plates on trailers.

RE: West Coast two weeks over Easter 2009 ***Updated*** pg 3

After trip report....
WE LOVED THIS TRIP!!!! Utah is an amazing place and full of great hikes and vistas!
We essentially started the trip off in the Las Vegas, Camping World with a planned stop to service the rig before our vacation. I got my axles and brakes serviced and can't say enough how great the service was. The folks there had my rig finished and done UNDER estimated cost and even washed off the "bug guts" for me free of charge.
Our next stop was Zion National Park and we camped with Zion Canyon Campground & RV Park. We decided AGAINST the NPS Watchman Campground for the fact that we would need water and sewer connections (my girls just use WAY too much water). The campground was just opening and doing a lot of renovations, paving roads and such BUT they didn't do a lot in terms of general cleaning--bathrooms were dirty and stayed dirty the entire time. Overall my wife and I loved several hikes here specifically, the Pa'rus Trail (great for evening walks and early morning runs!), the Emerald Pool hikes, and Riverside Walk.
We also took a day out and visited Antelope Canyon in Page Arizona and were sadly disappointed. For $75-80 we were CRAMMED into a tight canyon (along with 8 to 10 other tour groups) and rushed. It turned out to be a very frustrating visit with everyone bumping into everyone, and no chance to really take in the sights.
Our next stop was Arches National Park and we stayed at Moab Valley RV Resort. This visit was the only place where my "loose planning" failed us. It turns out that there was a Marathon during the weekend we wanted to stay and we were forced to cut our visit short a day. Normally I LOVE to plan our visits with reservations but I was assured that this time would offer plenty of flexibility if we wanted it--no hard feelings, but I will be doing reservations from now on.
In Arches we REALLY loved the Devils Garden Hike (probably our favorite hike the entire trip) and the hike to Delicate Arch. We also visited the "Windows" and of course Balancing Rock--great place and wonderful hiking--my daughters loved scrambling up the rocks by day and swimming at night!
We pulled out and then made the short drive to Mesa Verde National Park and stayed at the Cortez KOA. We can't say enough how welcome we were made to feel. The owner, though not open, allowed us to stay with him and made sure we were given all sorts of information on the local area. We visited the Anasazi Cultural Center and of course the Mesa Verde National Park. We visited the Spruce Tree house, hiked the Petroglyph Point Trail and the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail. Though most of the park was still closed--my girls were fascinated with living in a cliff.
We then pulled out and headed back west towards California and surprised the girls with a three day trip to Disneyland. Surprisingly, the park was not as crowded as we expected and we spent at least one night late watching the fireworks.
Our final stop was at Wine Country RV Resort. This WONDERFUL campground gave us two sites to allow me to stay connected (only charging me for one) and situated us next to a walking trail to visit the adjacent vineyard for some wine tasting. The girls enjoyed more swimming while Mom and I enjoyed some wine and reminisced over the entire trip.
Thanks again for your help on this 16 day, 3,000+ mile trip, visiting 4 states, and three national parks--this was a WONDERFUL trip and leaves us looking forward to our 30 day summer trip starting after the July 4th weekend...

RE: Overnight California Campground

People like Morro Bay State Park. You should be able to drop in in the middle of the week this time of year, although the sites with hook ups are likely full.
Thanks for the suggestion...unfortunately, I will be traveling tomorrow, Saturday, the first weekend of spring break in the California School system--I doubt there will be many open sites.
