RE: best travel trailer for long term, not full-time camping

If there is an RV show coming up in your area, that may be a good place to start. Alot of choices and floor plans all on one floor. I have found that alot of these things are put together the same way, although in some of the higher-end units, you can see a difference in quality control. Most of the appliances are generic through-out the manufacturers.
I have been through a couple of shows this spring and I have found that Jayco produces a nice, well built TT at a decent price that seems to match all of the things on your wish list. Of course, this is just one man's opinion.

RE: Black and grey tank valve broken?

The first thing to do is get one of these. It attaches at the end of your sewer pipe and you can keep that valve closed until your sewer connections are made.
Second, I would suspect that the black tank valve may not be closing completely. This is fairly common as many people close that valve while there may still be TP in the way. Since your sewer cap was in place, the pipe eventually filled up.
When you have the luxury of time (and no line behind you) try hooking up your sewer hose and running a garden hose into the RV toilet (unless you have a built in sprayer). Keep the valve closed as far as it will go until the tank is almost full. Open the valve partway. The sudden rush of water through the valve may pull out any obstruction.
That twist-on valve sure looks like a quick fix for your problem until you can R&R the valves. Sounds to me like the doors on the valves at some point were beginning to sieze and the previous owner forced them to a point where the connection from the handle and rod to the door in the valve broke, just guessing, of course. If this indeed happened, lucky for you they were broken in the "open" position so you can still do the dumping procedure.
I would definitely buy the twist-on valve like the above poster suggested. It will allow you to use your camper without issue. When and if you decide to do a valve replacement, buy a bottle of that valve lube that you dump in the tanks. I use this a couple of times per season and it keeps the mechanism working smooth.

RE: Questions about diesel?

My previous TV was an 08 F250 6.4 Powerstroke. It was ok, but fuel mileage was not as one would expect for a diesel. My truck before that was an 03 Dodge Cummins diesel. Now that was a great truck. Excellent fuel mileage and very easy to maintain. If I could go back in time, I would not have sold that old Dodge.
But, yes, almost every fuel station around my area sells diesel.

Congrats on the new Ram. Very nice looking rig. You will love the power of the Hemi engine.
The new Ram and the size of your TT will make a great towing combo. Enjoy!!!

RE: RV Paid Off

If you like the RV and can afford it, just buy the darn thing. Who gives a fying flip if you pay cash or have a loan. Life is too short and tons of memories to be made for worrying about such nonsense.
I don't think anyone will be asked at a campground check-in if they have a clear title or a lien on their RV.

RE: Storage door bubbled

Yep, de-lam occuring on on of my storage doors too. I noticed it last season and hasn't gotten any worse. But yes, de-lam definitely caused by water behind fiberglass skin.
I will replace the seal on the door opening this spring in hopes it will keep the damage minimal.

RE: RV Paid Off

Why is it anyone's concern if I pay cash or take a loan. Does not affect anyone but me and my wife, and I could care less if someone else thinks I should have paid cash. My wife was a financial planner and is incredibly good with money. I let her take the lead and say "Yes Dear". So yeah, we have a loan on our new trailer and are happy about it. Our paychecks go to the purchase of everything we have, not someone else's. Our decisions our stuff....Have a wonderful day.
Oh wait, I just figured it out. It's their opinions, as heavy handed, condescending and arrogant as they are, just opinions. All the previous is just my opinion of course..
Well said, dwayne.

RE: RV Paid Off

Finally made last payment, free and clear on the TT. Now we have more money to spend on our trips so time to start planning to do more. Yes, I know some have paid cash for their RV and some finance, like us. Financing worked for us. Couldn't see taking money out of savings where we were earning more in our accounts than the interest we paid by financing. Yes, there was a significant difference in both interest rates.
Hurray!!! We are happy for you .We just have 15 years to go..
god bless you, and enjoy!!
Yep, we took the 15 yr. (3) payment book plan. Wish we didn't have to do it that way, but what the heck, I'd rather have a payment than not have the RV at all.
We try to double up on monthly pymts when we can. I think we have just a bit over one payment book left.
I'm meticulous about maintainence and appearance of the trailer as to have something left of it when we mail the last payment.

RE: Bought my first TT!!

Under $500.00? For that price, I would say you stole that thing! Looks good. The thing about TT's, they are just wood, screws, staples and lots of caulk. If your handy, and it sounds like you are, anything can be fixed. The repairs needed sound like nothing more than a fun weekend project.
Congrats!

Central/southern Pennsylvania

Trying to come up with some new destinations within a day's drive from metro-Detroit.
We were thinking the central to central/southern Pennsylvania area.
Any suggestions for a Full hook-up private campground? Would like nice padded, level sites too. Thanks!

Algonac State Park may be an option. Maybe 45 minutes up I-94 from St. Clair Shores. Nice park and not too far from wedding.

RE: New 5er without slide??

The new Trailer Life just had a 5th wheel from Evergreen RV that weighs 8ooolbs,
Maybe with the newer half ton but a 1995?
Having towed 6000lb fiver with a 2000 Silverado half(good match), I would never have hitched it to 8000lbs.
I agree. Though his '95 Silverado is a low mileage cream puff(40k orig.) that only comes out of his carpeted garage to tow the TT in the summer time, I doubt that he would subject his baby to 8000 lbs.
Not even sure what that truck's towing capabilities are, but to me if he does go with a small 5er, one would have to guess he would need to do something with the rear suspension, Timbrens or bags??
I did look at the Jayco 23.5 that an above poster suggested and I found it to be very impressive. Looking at the specs, it seems to be very much half-ton towable even with a slide. To me, as said above, with a 5er that small you really do want some sort of a slide out. I will fwd the info. Thanks all for the help!

New 5er without slide??

Recently, my brother's family and my family were on a weekend camping trip and my brother expressed interest in a new 5er. He said he would like to get one without a slide so as not to have the weight associated with a slide. He currently has a 1995 Chevy half ton pick-up that tows his 26 ft. TT, so the 5er would need to be light weight.
I told him that I didn't think they made 5er's without slides anymore, but I would throw the question out to you folks. Anyone know a manufacture that makes a light weight, non-slide 5er?

RE: ~Post your campsite photos here~

We stayed at Maumee Bay State Park in Ohio on our way to New York to see Niagara Falls. The campground was beautiful, large sites, level asphalt pads, and lots to do with bike trails, two beaches, a nature center, etc. The downside to having campsites cut into prairie grasses was the the unbelievable number of ticks. We couldn't walk on the grass without one trying to latch on for a meal. That meant the dog had to stay in the camper and we spent VERY little time outside to enjoy the campsite.
We were in site #29 - the first site of the row.

We stayed there a few years back and were very impressed with the Ohio State Park system. Very well kept and very friendly park staff. Believe it or not, I think we were on the same site or the one next to it, can't remember exactly. We will make it back there some day, we really enjoyed it. Lots to do as you said.

Mine work great on my truck. I'm like the above poster, the easier and most worry-free, the better. I give 'em a 10 out of 10!
