RE: Double towing in Canada

If your State allows double towing then there shouldn't be any problem. All the States and Provinces have reciprocity agreements that allow you operate your vehicles in their state or province as long as you are legal in your home state or province. The only caveat is that you can not exceed the total length limit of the jurisdiction that you're in. For example, here in Ontario, total length of your setup can not exceed 75 feet. Because British Columbia has government run auto insurance, their rules may be different so you may have to look into that but I doubt if you will have any problems.

RE: Front to rear Porpoising

You obviously, did just about everything to your truck that is possible so now it's time to look at the trailer. Previous comments mentioned weighing the combo and the truck to get a definitive kingpin weigh. It certainly sounds like your kingpin weight is on the light side. Also you should look at how level your 5vr is riding when hitched to the truck. If its running high, you may have to move the position of the pin box or hitch platform or both.

RE: This stinking camper..

We're slowly digging ours out of the snow and loading it up to pull-out this Saturday for about 7 to 8 weeks. We're tired of this cold northern winter and decided to head south for a not so cold southern winter.

RE: How many register GVW when buying sticker (ontario)

I don't have a dually, but I wanted to use personalized plates on my truck, so it was registered as a car because that's only way they can do it. I wasn't sure how they registered it for GVWR, but when I was required to get a "Clean Air" test done on the Diesel, it was registered for the GWVR on the sticker. (Note: even though a "Clean Air" isn't required for my diesel, I still had to pay the 35 bucks for literally a blank sheet of paper, so that I could get my licence tag.)

RE: Crossroads 30SK low drain points

There are 2 valves in the right side basement storage area behind the battery compartment. They are at the low point of the hot and cold water lines and can be used to help drain the system. You need to drain the hot water tank separately.

RE: 2WD vs 4WD

It never ceases to amaze me that people need a 4X4 for snow. When I learned to drive in Northern Ontario, there was plenty of snow and all we had was an ordinary car with "3 on the tree". 4X4's were for the mining and lumbering companies, not your average Joe. If you got stuck in the snow, you got out without a tow truck, because you didn't want your "oldman" knowing about it. I had to order our 2500HD 2X4 because they were none on the lot. I saved considerable coin because I bought a 2X4. I didn't have to pay for the extra added equipment, which means that I get better fuel mileage because I don't have to haul that extra weight. With the front drive train gone, I have extra load capacity for other things. I've been towing with a 2X4 for about 10 years and have not got in to a situation in which would require a 4X4. If I do, I'll call Good Sam and have them take care of it for me.

RE: Bell tv in USA

If you do receive Bell in the States, that's great, but what ever you do, don't tell them that you are in the the States because they will send a signal to the satellite to turn off your receiver. It happened to me and that's why I'm with StarChoice

RE: Yet Another 1/2 ton TV 5er Question

I had an 03 1500 Hemi Quad Cab with the trailer tow pkg, (3:92 gears) and the 20" sport wheels. I also towed a fifth that weighed in just a little heavier than yours. The Hemi pulled fine, used the truck for two years pulling the fifth. One day after loading truck/trailer ready for camping, I ran it across the CAT scales. Ouch. Close to 1000 lbs over the trucks GVWR and 450 lbs over the trucks RGAWR, but under by 300 lbs the GCVWR (which is 14,000 lbs). By the time you load the truck bed with generator, a few tools, chairs and of course the hitch, you gobble up a lot of payload. My pin weight ended up being 1400 lbs. You end up with one bouncy ride. I now have a 08 1500 MegaCab (really a 2500) with the Hemi. Night and day difference. Bottom line is you go from a 3900lbs semi floating 5 lug rear axle in the 1500 to a 6010 lbs 8 lug full float axle in the MegaCab. Thats what carries the weight This is very bad! You should never exceed your rear or front GAWR, especially with a 1/2 ton semi floating rear axle! You are currently at 114 percent of your rear axle GAWR! I also run 1,000 over my listed GVWR, but I am only at 84 percent of my rear GAWR, I still have almost 1,000# before I reach my GAWR, and this is on a Full floating axle. I am not thrilled at this, but still well within the axle and tire weight ratings. You on the other hand are a prime candidate for an axle and or bearing failure. Yes, failed to read after the exceeding the RGAWR!! That is one very good move to the full floater!! There is merit to your comment. I have a 2500HD and the axles are rated for about 9000#, but my RAWR is 6048# because that is the weight limit of the tires that are mounted on it. I could increase the RAWR by putting on higher rated tires. Obviously, I'd never exceed the rating of the axle.

RE: Yet Another 1/2 ton TV 5er Question

One of the things that controls your GVWR is the type of tires that came with your vehicle. Most 1500 (1/2 ton) trucks come with "P" rated tires that are the limiting factor. Your rear axle is capable of handling more weight so going to a "D" or "E" rated tire would give you more capacity without overloading your truck. You must keep in mind that you don't want to overload your axles. A 1/2 ton with your engine and rear end should be able to pull your trailer with higher rated tires but you will be using a lot of fuel regardless of the type of tires that you use.

RE: Topos on Nat Resources Canada: save 'em as PDFs

Thanks for the Link. Even us Canadians are not all aware of what our government puts on the internet. I'm going to make a library of them on my laptop when I get home. Thanks again.

RE: Towing with Dodge Durango

Your tires are limiting your capacity. If they were Load Range C or D then you would have a higher weight capacity. Your rear axle is likely rated for 5000 lbs but your tires are limiting you to 3900 lbs. While you never want to exceed your axle rating you can add a safety margin with C or D rated tires. They are more rigid, so more stable pulling a trailer. When buying a cart and a horse, you buy the cart first and then you buy a horse that is capable of pulling it fully loaded and them some. Just something my truck salesman told me. The analogie makes sense.

RE: Replacement Breakers

Here is what I did after I was having tripping problems with 2 breakers in one case. The original setup had a dual 30/20Amp breaker in the same case like the 2 15Amp breakers in the second slot. I replaced the 30, 20 and two 15A breakers. If I had six slots, I would have changed all the breakers. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h221/hamops/Trailer%20General/P6300455A.jpg

RE: Need tips on how to weigh FW and Truck

I do two weighs at the CAT scale. The first weigh is with the truck and trailer and the second weigh is with the truck only. This gives the information that I need to determine the pin weight of our 5vr. I'll do a single weigh if I just want to know that I'm not exceeding my axle weights.

RE: Mild shock

There should be no shocky even with a bad ground. The purpose of the safety/case/chassis ground is to get rid of the problem before it hurts you.... And therein lies the problem. He didn't HAVE a "safety/case/chassis ground." An open ground will give the OP exactly the symptoms he experienced. The mild shock was the result of the RV being inductively charged by the internal wiring, with no ground connection to bleed it off. The next park had no such issue, hence the symptoms disappearing. Like the others have suggested, get a tester and test each and every outlet before you plug in your rig. :) If the polarity of the phase and neutral are reversed at the receptacle, which I suspect, then the grounding system would not provide the safety that it's intended to provide, because the grounding system has been compromised. To produce an inductive charge of the potential to give one a shock would require someone to park the trailer very near a 500KV powerline. It's not induction that caused the shock but instead poor workmanship on the part of the person who installed or replaced the 30A receptacle.

RE: Mild shock

The neutral and hot wires have to have been reversed in the 30A receptacle. Getting phase checker is cheap insurance against letting that happen to you. Essentially what happen is that the whole trailer became energised because of the reversed polarity and when you touched the wheel, you formed a current path to ground, thereby receiving a small shock. It could have been a lot worse.

RE: How do you get bird dropping stain off fiver.

I used a Mr Clean eraser with water. It worked well for me. I try no to use any chemicals on the fibreglas.

RE: Usable Life of a Truck

We have all heard Ford owners say that Fords are MUCH better than Dodges, right? Then, obviously, if my Dodge can go 276,000 miles and still be going strong, there is NO need whatsoever to replace a FORD with "only" 150,000 miles on it! That is just simple logic! True for the Cummin's Turbo-Diesel, but it's only problem is that it's bolted to a Dodge. :W

RE: Onstar--less frequent oil changes?

I've been following the OLM system for oil changes and it hadn't voided any GM warranty issues. It saved me money because I don't have to change oil as often. Interesting enough, if I'm working the truck, the OLM forces me to change more often (mileage wise).

RE: 1/4 of tire suddenly bald

Plan on replacing all four. The other three are likely not far behind. That extra 400 spent is well worth the peace of mind. Good advice, because your tires are near the end of their service anyway. I replaced the tires on our 5vr after 6 years.
