RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

I have a Reese Signature Series 18k with the full pivoting head. It operates like a semi and I have no problem with chucking. Great hitch. I picked this hitch as it leaves a clean bed when the hitch is removed (no rails). I believe it is now called the Elite Series. This is the hitch you would buy if you ordered a new truck with the pre installed under bed rails.

RE: 3/4 or 1 Ton Truck?

I was camping in PA last year beside two fellows who had truck campers. Both had duallies as the weight of their campers plus anything they towed would have been over a SRW capacity. You didn't say if you were going to tow anything, but something to think about

RE: 2012 2500 dodge crew cab question

I have an 08 MegaCab with the Hemi. Mine also clunks once and a while. Dealer said same thing, they all do it. I have 88k km on mine (55k miles) and no problems. Tow a 7500-8000lbs 5ver with it.

RE: can i pull this, without problems

I had an 03 Hemi Quad Cab with tow pkg 3:92 gears pulling a 7500-7800lbs loaded fifth. Pulled fine but ran out of payload quick, especially when loading up for a 2 week trip. Found an 08 1500 MegaCab (really a 2500) with a Hemi and 3:73 rear. No more payload problem and alot more stable. You didn't say what year your truck was but I am sure the older ones with the leaf springs have a higher payload capacity than the newer coil suspension. Buy a good weight distribution hitch.

x2, If it is a true 06 - 08 MegaCab, Hemi only. One sitting here in my laneway. 2500 MegaCab could be had with the Hemi or a Diesel

Just remember, with a 4x4, when changing gears, you have to replace both the front and rear gears. Double the $$$

RE: Re: Changing my life

Same here, had an 03 Quad Cab, Hemi, Tow Pkg with the 3:92 gears. Truck pulled fine, but ran out of payload. Installed another set of leaf springs which helped out great, but after taking the whole rig over the scales one day, I found myself way over on GVWR, RAWR but still under GCWR. I have since upgraded to an 08 MegaCab (really a 2500) with a Hemi and am all good now for weight ratings. My 5th is around 7500lbs loaded. Its the pin weight that will get you

RE: Need advice on my truck.

I have an 08 MegaCab with the Hemi and 3:73's with the stock 265-70/17 tires and tow a 7500 -8000lbs 5th. I find it does a good job, probably would do better with the 4:10's as the MegaCab does add alot more weight than the standard Quad cab. Nice comfortable truck when towing, and your passengers will love the size of the back seat area. Loose the wheels and the lift kit, put the 4:56's in and hook up and go!

RE: Fifth wheel

I tow in the 7500 to 8000lbs range with my 08 Hemi Dodge MegaCab and find it to be no problem. I will admit that if I was approaching 9500 lbs to say 11,000 I'd be looking at the new Ford F250 with their 6.2L gasser. For me, I don't do enough towing to justify the diesel, but if a gooooood deal came along, I wouldn't say no to the oil burner!

RE: 4-6" lift kit and towing

Obviously stock vehicles tow the best, they where designed with specific components to make up the HD/Tow packages. Tire changes that affect height is the most common. For example, trucks that have the 20" wheel option will always have at least 3.73 or 3.92 gears, otherwise your tow pkg will probably have 3.42 or 3.55 gears. You will lessen your tow capacity and put more strain on your vehicle with a given load. Now in saying all this, a great deal depends on what weight you need to pull

RE: Tundra to 3/4 ton-- thinking about it, advice please

I'll come at from a different angle. Are your boys pretty active, do they like sports. They are both at the age where you will begin organized sports. If this happens I can guarantee that your summer weekends will be very busy, therefore less time to camp. If you are in this situation, hold on to your Tundra for a couple of years too see what your future holds and then decide. By that time, if camping is in the cards you'll need a bigger truck and trailer because the boys will want to bring their friends!!! Been there, done that. Good luck

RE: Generator ?s

Cabela's sell the Champion 2000 watt Invertor Generator for $699
I have run one of these for the past two years, run great and are parallel ready. As quiet as the red or blue ones and half the price.
I see now that they make a 3100 watt version for $999

RE: Hello Ram 1500 Diesel!

I have bee saying for years a half ton diesel would sell big time. Not all of us need a 250/2500 350/3500 to tow, or just to get the diesel option. Most of us would be happy with a 5 to 7000 lbs tow capacity to haul our boats or snowmobiles, and yet get great economy. Heck, even if they had a new Dakota with a 4 cyl turbo diesel, I think that would sell well also. Just look at this as a truck version of a VW Jetta TDI. They are a very popular vehicle up here

RE: Towing 5th wheel

He already has the truck, I was just suggesting on how he could find out how much available weight he would have after loading up his truck, ready to camp. At least this would give him an idea of acceptable pin weight.(this is how I read the OP)

RE: Tow vehicle

I have an 08 1500MegaCab which is really a 2500 with a Hemi, 3:73 rear. I pull a 27ft Puma fw for a total combination weight, ready to go camping of 14500lbs. I have been pulling this combo for the last 4yrs and it does a good job. My cousin has a 2011 2500 Hemi with a 4:10 rear and is pulling around 2000lbs more, and he is very satisfied with his. In saying this, I agree with the previous poster in saying that any trailer approaching close to 10k lbs and over, go diesel. You will be happier with the towing power and mpg pulling. Now, if Dodge ever puts the 6.4L with the new 8 speed transmission in the 2500/3500 trucks, I might change my mind! Each setup has its +/-, just depends on your situation

RE: Towing 5th wheel

There are 5th trailers out there that are 1/2ton towable, but you have to be diligent in your search. Weight is your problem, RGAWR or rear axle weight. Even though everyone boasts the F150EB with the max tow\HD option has a 8200 GVWR, your rear axle is only rated for 4050lbs (or close to this). A 3/4 ton will have at least a 6010lbs or higher rating which is basically 2000lbs greater, and guess where all that pin weight goes! Easiest way to get a baseline is load the truck with everything you go camping with, take it to the weight scales that can measure both front and rear axles separately. With your scaled weight, add another 250lbs to the rear axle weight for a slider hitch and subtract this weight from your door sticker RAWR. What's left is your amount of pin weight available. This is your most critical measurement.

RE: 5th wheel and short bed trucks ... is this a problem?

I have an 08 MegaCab and use an older Reese Signature series 18k manual slider. I have probably used the slider 7-8 times in the last 6 years. Nice to know its there if you need it. I think its called the Elite series now
