RE: Questions about replacing Norcold Refrigerator

The reason for the belief that the NORCOLD 1200 is unsafe is understandable. That's why I've taken steps to make mine.
But, one thing keeps popping up that bothers me. I keep reading statements which infer that a NORCOLD 1200 does not keep ice cream "hard". Mine worked perfectly for 7-1/2 years, INCLUDING keeping the ice cream as hard as I've ever seen ice cream. It also made ice as fast as a freon refrigerator.
HOWEVER, after I installed the "Amish" cooling unit, IT DID NOT.
It took me a little over one year to learn why, and to learn what modifications I needed to make in order to make the "Amish" cooling unit work(cool) as good as the original.
So what did you have to do to make it cool as well as the Norcold?
Lucy
I had to "re-educate" myself, on refrigeration systems.
It started when I called the supplier and told them it didn't work. I was instructed to perform several tests. They determined that it might be defective, and they sent me another one. I was a bit angry, since nobody pays me for my labor. I installed it, and it did not solve the problem. After discussing, and cussing, with the sales branch AND the key people at the factory, without getting anywhere other than an offer to send me another one. I put a stop to THAT, and after I got over my anger I decided to make a major attempt to find out exactly what was going on. I did the necessary research that put me back on track. I ran a few experiments, trying some weird stuff. I realized/concluded that since this replacement cooling unit was bigger, and of higher capacity, surely it required a better arrangement in the installation, so that it could exchange the extra heat that it probably was making. Sure enough, the answer to MY problem was to perform the necessary modifications that would FORCE significantly more air to flow through the fins of the condenser(the upper heat exchanger). I fabricated a tight duct that enclosed the condenser. Then, I fabricated a rubber skirt attached to the ceiling, which would complete the duct all the way up to the additional fans which I installed in the roof vents.
I relayed all this information to David Force, the supplier. I trust he's telling his customers all about my experience. Because, it sure solved MY problem (of inability to refrigerate satisfactorly).

RE: Do you put table lamp on steering wheel for all to see?

Yes - I use many lamps inside. Only time we use the ceiling lights is if we are working on some work project, otherwise it's just the lamps.
I throw a quilt over the steering wheel table. I have a couple that are 58" square -- big enough to pull down the front to hide anything stored under there. Usually my shoes and any sewing project I might take along on extended trips.

Search results for Residential Fridge
You could do another search on Whirlpool and probably come up with some additional ones. Or Samsung.
There are tons of posts on this topic. I've lost count how many times I've shard what we did.

RE: Using a Sewing Machine in RV

I have a Bernina 180 that I sometimes take with me on our trips. Not the most elaborate model they offer today, but still pricey and computerized. We use a Progressive Surge Protector -- which will controls the surges and will shut down the power to the MH in low voltage situations.
Ours is a portable unit -- but you can install a hard wired one. I'd encourage you to invest in one of these to protect all your electronics. We bought ours @ Camping World -- the first thing we added after we took delivery. It's not uncommon to have low voltage issues @ CGs.
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is modified sine wave inverters and electrical devices with computerized - digital systems do not mix. The recommended inverter for complex digital equipment is a pure sine wave. Do you have some plugs onboard that "bypass" the inverter? If so, to be safe I'd use that one for the machine - along with the Progressive Surge Protector for the entire RV. (or one of similar quality)

RE: Post your Holiday Rig decorations

Not a current year pic, but this is what we did the last time we were RVing over Xmas. This was @ Topsail Hill SP. Like many other RVers, during our stay we replaced the lightbulb in the yard light with a green one.
The scarves around the mirror say "This is as Merry as we Get". I bought those @ a Xmas store in Myrtle Beach many years ago.
Always fun to walk the CG after dark.

RE: carpet

We recarpeted some areas in our 40' MH and used a 12x16 piece to do it. Had 4x6 left over. I came real close to using a remnant from the store, but it was just not the right color. Frustrating as it was a great deal on a high-quality piece. Sometimes you luck out, sometimes not.
You can read more about our project and see some pics in this link

RE: Replacing Couch with TV & Stand??

Something to consider -- Depending on the age/manufacturer - If the MH has slides it's not uncommon to have one that is a raised floor - i.e., when extended it does not lower to become flush with the rest of the floor. Sofas often hide this fact as they often fill the space. And as others already mentioned sometimes plumbing or heating stuff is run underneath and behind one of the sofas
This would likely limit what side you'd use for the chairs. And if you didn't mind the raised floor you could always conceal the heating/plumbing stuff by adding some cabinetry around it.. and I'm sure it could look very nice if tied in w/cabinetry for the TV stuff.

RE: Hilton Head RV/Camping??? Really?

Reading your posts here and looking at your profile - I see a pattern - others you meet are living up to your expectations. One that disappoints you.
You want respect - then expect it. Might take some practice, but it is possible. The change we want starts within.

RE: South Florida Campgrounds

Broward County and Miami Dade County CGs are nice.
http://www.broward.org/PARKS/Pages/Default.aspx
Further South is Larry & Penny Memorial CG.
http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/parks/larry_penny.asp
In 2007 we stayed @ C.B. Smith park for several weeks on a house hunting trip and while we waited to close on the house. We've also often stayed @ Markham park prior to leaving on long trips so I could get the MH ready. Not all sites are paved @ Markham park. C.B. smith is in the middle of Pembroke Pines but not far from I-75 . T.Y. is the most recently renovated Broward County CG -- in Hollywood, FL off I-95. All 3 within 10-20 min of Ft. Lauderdale.
Larry & Penny is extremely popular and often booked solid during snowbird season.
See a few more details (and some pics) on 3 of these CGs in this link.

RE: Insurance in Florida for RV in storage?

The unit is in storage in Florida, but that doesn't mean that the insurance has to come from a company in Florida. OP is from Texas. Pretty sure it'll be up to whatever company agrees to insure, and where they are from, that will determine what is covered under certain scenarios and what is not.
Well it will be interesting to hear how this works for the OP. We were told the policy and cost is written based on the MH's garaged location.

RE: Insurance in Florida for RV in storage?

FL MH insurance is outrageous.. especially if the storage facility is near the coast or a large metropolitan city. The comprehensive is the highest part of the policy due in due to high # of claims from hurricanes and collisions in these areas.
Try Twin Peaks insurance agency see if they can help you locate a company to meet your needs. They helped us a few years ago when our Progressive rate went thru the roof. We were switched to Great American and now have Triumpe (Sp?) these are both associated with National Interstate. Making this switch cut our cost in half. A lot of Tiffin owners who live in Florida have used them too - most had the same problem with Progressive as we did. Good luck.

RE: Which county park west of Ft Lauderdale Airport ?

TY was the most recent totally remodeled Broward county park. Doesn't look like Larry & Penny Thompson though which is designed in what they call PODS -- sites grouped in circled sections.
Link to TY -- One pic you'll see an example of their long paved sites. It is closest to Ft. Lauderdale right off I-95.
TY
Markham Park is furthest West of Ft. Lauderdale. Did have hurricane damage (lost trees) but there is only one section with paved sites with pull thrus and the rest are arranged like Larry & Penny Thompson, but only 1 site in each POD is paved. They have rebuilt a bath house and you can tell they have planted some new trees, but the hurricane damaged occurred before we moved down there so I'm not entirely sure what else they have done.
C.B. Smith is sort of in the middle -- near a lot of shopping. SItes are tighter there.
We have stayed @ Markham and C.B. Smith and drove thru TY & Larry & Penny. I have some a few pics of C.B. , Markham and Larry & Penny Thompson and our assessment of each park. Start @ link below.
Our Florida CG stays.
CG info is listed by city location. To see pics I have click on links within the CG review. If you decide to stay @ Markham, just be sure to request a paved site. You won't want to be just on the grass -- it will be lumpy and more bugs. And if it rains heavily -- might have a lot of standing water near you. They do have a lovely Dog park.. if that is of interest.
We lived nearby for 4 years.
Good luck.

RE: Looking for camping around the Miami area.

It may be Larry & Penny Memorial Park which is a Miami-dade county park.
http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/parks/larry_penny.asp
Very popular snowbird park... during snowbird season very hard to get a site. But if your trip is coming up soon, you should have no problems.
We lived near Ft. Lauderdale for 4 years, so we have visited many CGs around the state. Some notes on our experiences can be found in this link. We have not stayed @ Larry & Penny, but we drove thru it one day and took some pics. You'll find info on that in this link. Just page down til you see the entry for Miami.
Our Florida stays
A few other county parks are in Broward County -- Markham, C.B Smith and T.Y. We have stayed at 2 of those. All have full hookups.

RE: Need info on 04 Tiffin Allego Bus 38DP Roof

You'll get more replies if you ask this question on the TRVN forum. Cruzer (one of the admin's) use to own an 04 Bus. But I'm sure there are others who can give more details.
I believe it was made just like ours (we have an '06 Bus), but I"m not 100% sure. We have had no problems. The roof problems many other Tiffin owners are having started in 07/08 when they changed the construction.

RE: Own a Campground? This is why I will/wont call for a Resv.

Oh my -- you need to buy a data plan for WiFi service from your cell provider. If you are willing to pay $5 or 10 day @ a CG for their WiFi - you are paying a fortune for what appears may be mediocre service at best. Buy a plan that meets your business needs and then you can start enjoying some of the real CGs in America. Like State Parks, COE CGs.
The WiFi thru cell companies is only going to get better, wider. Focus your time on what is in your control vs all these CG owners. That's a waste of time -- especially since most of those who know anything about this understand that campers just use their smart phones for email and those that really need it have already invested in data plans.
I got exhausted just reading your discontent with CG Wifi.. so I didn't read much more.

RE: Cutting through campsites - how would you do it? (long)

I'd walk thru the sites if unoccupied otherwise walk around or drive.
It's not about me -- it's about others so it's irrelevant if I think it's not big deal -- that's my value system which may or may not match our neighbors.
Bottom line respecting the personal space of others would be my M.O. whether the sites are rented or owned.
Here's a little story about personal space. DH was dumping our tanks on the MH a few years ago and another RVer in the park wheeled over his blue tote and walked up and started dumping his blue tote in the same drain while ours was still being dumped. My DH told him -- I've never seen anyone do that before explained how inappropriate it was do to that. The guy was clueless - said no one had ever said anything to him before which I find unlikely.

RE: WATER FRONT CAMPING

Goose Point COE - Bassett, VA.
Old Federal COE - Flowery Branch, GA
Twin Lakes COE - Clemson, SC
Pics of every site for these fisrt 3 COE CGs can be found on the reservation site - recreation.gov. Just pull up the CG list.. you should find them by hovering over the site #s. Click on the pic to enlarge.
Old Federal is on Lake Lanier and Twin Lakes is on Lake Hartwell. They are several other CGs on both of these lakes -- so take a look on recreation.gov - you'll find pics of those as well.
Winfield COE - Appling, GA - No pics on the reservation site, but I have several in my photo album. Winfield Pics
North Bend COE - Boydnton, NC -- We have been here a few times, but never had a site on the water. Largely because there were only a few with w/e and they were already reserved. I took pics of lots of sites... you can see them here. Those pics are several years old so things may have changed.
http://hereslucy.squarespace.com/photos/north-bend-park-va-coe/
And here is info for a couple of our favorite private CGs..
Mountain Stream RV Resort - Marion, NC is on a fabulous stream. Pics of every site on their website.
http://www.mountainstreamrvpark.com/
Willow Tree RV Resort, Longs, SC (site 15,16,17,18 & a few more but those are the best. There website use to have pics of every site - not sure it does anymore. I have a few from our visits..
Willow Tree Pics
I always scope out COE CGs when planning trips as we find them to be so spacious and the best chance at waterfront sites. Now we live in Illinois and lots of CGs here and in Iowa have pics of every site. Ad I just found Indiana State Parks also have lots of pics. Couple more in TN have pics. Cedar Creek COE, Mt. Juliet. and I believe Dale Hollow Lake.
Some of the COE CGs are quite popular so you either have to plan way ahead or stay midweek to get the good sites, but we have found them to be some of the best CGs we have ever visited.
