RE: Stuck in the mud---UPDATE___UPDATE---UPDATE

ConnieAnd Mike is right on, getting out of the mud is nothing...Getting towed 50 miles to Fairbanks, Alaska with a blown engine in a 42' DP is whole different story. I hate to think what that tow would have cost us! 50 miles out, 10 miles to turn around, 50 miles back, and over 6 hours door-to-door for the wrecker..I signed the ticket and Good Sam paid the tow. Well worth the annual cost IMHO.( the only problem was that the wrecker driver and I were both a little too "full-figured" :) to easily crawl under the rig and disconnect the driveshaft. Good thing the airbags could lift the coach)

RE: RV Caravans - Any Bad Ones?

I haven't been on a caravan, but have taken two motorcoach tours overseas, one in Ireland and one in Europe. We took the Ireland tour because we took 3 young adult children with us and you can't rent a car over there that hlds 5 adults and their luggage, we took the 21 day "Rick Steves Europe" tour since we didn't speak German, Italian or Dutch. While I found that the tours were well run and the stops were interesting, I chafed at the idea of having to be somewhere or do something that somebody else decides. DW and I have also toured Ireland, Scotland, England, France and Spain on our own, and found it to be much more to our liking. Like Nascarcruzin, we went to Alaska in 2008 (actually stayed at several of the same places at the same time), but on our own for almost 3 months. If you like organization and having someone else do your planning, the Caravan should be perfect. Either way, I hope you have a great trip.

RE: Thievery at my Storage Site!

They're right. There's no such thing as a secure storage facility. I'm like STIM, I live out in the country and have my motor home, boats and other assorted toys in a big barn in my side yard. I guess someone can always come in there and try to steal something, but I think my dog would like that very much. He doesn't weigh but 50 pounds, but can put a 1200 pound bull on his knees, and is very protective. I also have a sign that says "never mind the dog, beware the owner". :)

RE: without elevation sensor???

The chart tells you how many turns equates to what angle. At least in theory.

RE: PLEASE TELL ME WHY I SHOULD JOIN FMCA?

The dues are cheap, the magazine is pretty good, and you get a neat badge to put on the motorhome. Seriously, if you enjoy Rallies, it is a great organization.

RE: What's it for?

It should be a valve to let the tow truck air up the brake system to tow the rig. Most DP's have one of those and a seperate air jack to allow you to iar a low tire using the rig's own air pressure. Remember, you have to have air pressure in the system to release the brakes.

RE: RV Park Recommendations in Ocala?

It's a little out of the way, but there is a really nice RV "community" called Lazy Days in Welaka Florida. This is on the East side of the St. Johns River, and LazyDays is right on the side of Little Lake George. We have a condo a couple of miles from there and sometimes take the Motor home over when the kids come to visit. All the lots are privately owned, but many owners rent them out. If you are interested, PM me and I'll send you the name and number of the realtor we deal with when we go there.

RE: Have U ever caught ur RV's fiberglass bumper on something?

Your repair solution might work if the crack is on a molding line. I would probably grind the gelcoat off the inside of the bumper and glass in a patch to hold the repaired parts together. The rear bumper (fiberglas) on our coach had to be cut and removed to replace the engine last year. The body shop repaired and repainted it and the reapir is invisible. That's the nice thing about fiberglas. I'm leary of repairing glas with putty or "Bondo", since it oftens falls off or cracks. I much prefer to glass in patches or fillers with good quality resin and either cloth or woven roving, then repaint.

RE: Tag axle pressure adjustment---Monaco Dynasty

I am fortunate since I only live a few miles from a DOT scale on lightly traveled US 1. (Most of the truck traffic is on I-95, which paralles US1 here). I drive to the scale in my car to make sure they are open and not too busy. I know some people are afraid that they might get a ticket if they are overwieght at a DOT scale, but I've never heard of that happening. If you are concerned that you might be overweight, then by all means use a commercial scale, but I've found the DOT staff to be very helpful and considerate. The problem with the commercial "CAT" scales is that you have to get positioned just right, then leave the scale and go inside to get the weighs, then adjust and re-do everything.

RE: Tag axle pressure adjustment---Monaco Dynasty

I adjust my tag according to the load. To do it right, you must be able to weigh all three axles. I go to a nearby DOT scale with the rig loaded for a trip, then add or reduce the air pressure until I get the appropriate amount of weight on each axle. As you add air to the tag, it adds weigh to the tag and front axles and reduces the weight on the drive axle. With a little practice, you can do this fairly quickly and get everything within axle weight limits.

RE: Places to eat in St Augustine, Fl

I forgot about the Columbia, it's good, but not as good as the original Columbia in Tampa. Another really good cuban restaurant is "La Habana" which is located behind AIA Aleworks downtown on the Bayfront at the intersection of King Street and Avenida Menedez. There is also a nice little wine bar called Cellar 6 on Aviles Street, about 2 blocks West of AIA Aleworks.

RE: Places to eat in St Augustine, Fl

The Reef is okay, but Aunt Kate's, directly across AIA from the Reef at the end of the road is a quaint "Old Florida" setting right on the ICW. Both of these are on AIA North of town. Osteens has the best shrimp in Florida, and is on AIA just east of the Bridge of Lions. Whatever you do, DO NOT eat at the Santa Maria on the Bayfront. The Raintree and LaPavillon, both on San Marco Blvd are both upscale with excellent food. Theo's, just east of U.S. 1 on King street (pretty much the main drag) has excellent breakfast and lunch. The "World Famous" Oasis at St. Augustine Beach has a great breakfast or brunch (also a pretty good sports bar). Saltwater Cowboys is located just South of the Oasis at the end of Dondaville Road off AIA. Big Katuna's suggestions are excellent also. Hope you enjoy your stay with us. If you have any problems while you're here, send me a PM and I'll try to help.

RE: Alaska or Maine is the ???

Maine is beautiful, but not eight weeks worth. On the other hand, eight weeks is kinda short-time for Alaska. We did Alaska last year, and Maine this fall for a little over 2 weeks. I would go back to Alaska tomorrow if I could.

RE: National Forest Camping Questions

I can only answer number one. Even during hunting season, it's illegal to hunt at night, so I guess you shouldn't hear any gunshots. The only exception to that is during the Alligator season in Florida when night hunting is the only legal time to hunt them. But the hunters don't shoot them with guns anyway.

RE: RV,auto and home insurance

State Farm for autos, golf cart, boats, RV and home insurance with liability "umbrella" for everything, but since State Farm is in the process of "leaving" Florida for Homeowners' insurance, I will "leave" them for everything else when they cease to write my homeowners coverage.

RE: Mesa Verde- Colorado

We atayed in the KOA in Cortez 2 years ago and it was okay. Actually, Cortez makes a nice base to see the entier Area. The rive from cortez-telluride-ouray-Durango-Mesa Verde-Cortez is a nice day trip. But I've stayed in Ouray before and accessed the same area, and Durango has a Rodeo in the Summer. Great Jeep trails in the area between Telluride and Ouray.

RE: Leaving your home in your Class A

Don't forget to flush the tiolets after you turn off the water and drain the lines. In that same deep freeze in the early 80s that Stim talked about, my father turned off his heat before he went to Tampa for Christmas. Not only did his "Florida Heat Pump" (H20 to freon)and his water lines freeze, so did the H2O in the toilets. Having a low point water drain installed in the main line after the main shutoff is cheap insurance.
