RE: Salmon exchange

Very few around commercially canning any more. This is what I found out today.
Custom Seafood Processors in Soldotna cans on and exchange basis and this is what they told me.
Hope I understood them correctly, One lb of fresh filet Red will get you 1 1/2 cans + $4.50/can. Smoked and canned you get back 1 can + $5.50/can. They said the cans are the standard flat cans and are about 6 3/4 oz. You will have to sort this out to see if this is of value to you. They are still closed for the season but will return a call to you, leave a message on their machine. 907 262-9691.
Halibut can be canned but is not as desirable as fresh frozen, the rest of the fish packers in this area provide that service and fileted Halibut was about $1.10/lb. vacuum packed and frozen at Coal Point on the Homer Spit. This was not an exchange, you got your fish back.

RE: kayaking/canoeing

If you like to kayak both Seward and Homer have sea kayaks that you can rent. Homer you can take a boat to the islands and rent kayaks and see a lot of wild life up close.

RE: Question for Well Seasoned Alaska Travelers

It is doable but there are times you want to spend less time at some spots and more times at others. Starting from Wisconsin I would make a bee line to the start of the Alcan and then start a slower pace. When you get to Laird, Yukon and Alaska there may be places you may want to 3-4 or 5 days in one spot.
Where in Wisconsin do you hail, ex Spoonerite here.

RE: advice on what to buy

Mark
I'am not saying to buy here but just for example I went to Craigslist/California/Orange County/Trucks and autos/dealer only and typed in 3500 in the search box. On the first page about a dozen very nice looking 1 tons popped up, one already had a 5th wheel hitch ready to go.
I then went back and brought up RV's, typed in 5th in the search box and several very nice 5th wheels showed up. Now this is just a small sampling that you would find in So. Cal.
PPL in Texas has many nice consignments on the lot and you can view their inventory on line.

RE: Need a spreadsheet

You may just want to announce on RVnet where you are at and where you may be in the next several days while on your journey. When we first came up here on a visit some 35 years ago we had no schedule or reservations, much more relaxing.

RE: 2015 trip to the Arctic Circle

If this is direct mileage you may want to throw in an extra 1000 mi for side trips like Kenai Peninsula, Valdez, top of the world, etc.
Enjoy the trip and take your time, One area may have terrible weather for a day or two then turn out to be absolutely beautiful the day after you leave.

RE: Know any old interesting family stories ?

My Grandfather escaped from Europe early 21st century from what is now the Chech Republic. The build up for the war was drafting young for the armies. He escaped through Holland, on to London then to New York. Started in Virginia then Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, then Minnesota. Was a tenet farmer having 8 kids along the way, never had a dime, pour/broke all the time and died that way. He died when I was eight and the two times I saw him I was deathly afraid of him. Guess he would be classified as a draft dodger. According to my Dad he ruled the wife and the eight kids with his leather belt. I know at his funeral not to many tears were shed. So sad.

RE: Questions about traveling to AK

I have a few questions to ask the experienced campers in AK. We well be traveling to AK in our truck camper.
1. Do you need to run your A/C much in AK. in the months of July and August? If I need to run it much I'll need to bring out Yamaha 3000 along. If not much I can probably get along with my Honda 2000.
2. Is there much use to trailer my ATV along with us to AK and is there many places we can ride it that is not restricted. I don't mean cutting off through virgin country just logging roads and old roads to explore.
3. I know you need to be prepared for all wheather but are most days T shirt and shorts weather or long sleeve and long pants weather. We'll bring both but would like to know which to bring more of.
I'm sure that I'll have many more questions before we leave but this should tide me over for now.
Being in a TC we don't have as much room to pack things as a lot of you.
Thanks.
Butch, you will not need the 3000, AC not needed up here.
The ATV? there are trails in the interior but should not be ridden alone without having other ATV's with you. We ride the beach here on the peninsula when the tide is out. We do not ride alone.
Dress layered, don't think you need shorts up here but might on the way up. Rain gear yes. If you are planning to fish for Halibut you want coat, pants and knee boots otherwise a light weight set of rain gear you can take with you that would be easy to carry on tours etc.

RE: Summerwind TC holding tanks

Just confirming like the rest, one tank, one valve. If your water tank is full when you start and you do not use the out side shower, dump before you run the water tank dry. Our full gauge seems fairly accurate but I am always checking down the tiolet to see the level so we don't overfill, never have yet.
Hope you have as good as luck with yours as we have had with ours. In 8 years not one issue, not even a burnt out light bulb. Its been on and off the truck 100's of times, many times on the salt water beach on the Homer Spit. It is as cozy as our home for the two of us and when the wind is blowing on the Kachemak Bay the Wave 3 heater keeps us as snug as a bug.
