RE: chalet triple slide

HAVE WE BECOME TATTLE TALE TAILS Vigilantes Snoops Are we going to send members PMs telling them that we know who they really are... and we are coming to their homes? Threaten families... That is where this stuff leads to. Sleepy Chet, are you serious? Where did you come up with that? What historic reference of someone coming to another persons house to harm them, would you be pulling this from? Bottom line..... If it walks like a duck, quacks like duck, it could very well be a drunk with a duck call, but my bet is that its a duck. I'm sure that you remember Uhh, nope. :h

RE: Canoe rack?

3 x 3 x 3/16 ???? That's some heavy stuff there for only supporting a 33 lb canoe! 2 x 2 x 1/8 would be plenty strong for that application. 3/16" thick might be a tad on the thick side, I agree. However, for the sake of spreading out the load I'd still go with 3" x 3". This gives the vertical uprights 3" of attachment area. Granted the canoe is only 33 lbs, but anything worth doing is worth overdoing. :B

RE: Canoe rack?

Actually, how about utilizing the corner structure of the roof by attaching the brackets via 3" x 3"x 3/16" angle iron along the edge. This would allow for the strongest attachment point I would think. Socal, I like your idea of the upward bars that extend further than the cross bar to keep the canoe up there, especially while loading and unloading if done so from the side. With the above mentioned angle iron setup, the vertical bars could then be welded a full 3" on each side, instead of just on the ends. As for tools, I have a chop saw that I'll give to the first person to come get it. I hate that thing, it's loud, messy and not very accurate. My horizontal band saw, plasma cutter and die grinder are my go to tools. :B

RE: DIY 4' Hitch Extension Mod Fabrication

I think Matthew_B has an exceptional hitch setup. Wayne I absolutely agree. He went through alot of bashings on RV.net while he was designing it, and I'd like to say he prevailed in the end. I've had the opportunity to kick it, jump on it and look it over in person, and it really is a work of a art, with a unique approach to solving the problem. Matthew, did you ever paint the frame mount area? You know you'd gain 300-400 lbs of extra capacity back there if ya did. :B

RE: Canoe rack?

Are you going to have to unload the canoe to use raise the roof? Will the cross bars prevent raising the roof if you mount the rack on the sides? The sides I'm referring to, are the roof sides, not the camper sides themselves. Leaving the canoe on the roof when it is raised would have to be determined by integrity of the lift mechanism, or at least knowing what the roof is designed to support in the UP position. DJ - Ya may want to contact Rex at Northstar Campers and see if he has any info on best ways to install this rack, or other recommendations.

RE: Canoe rack?

I vote that you install them on the roof sides. If you install directly on the roof, it is going to put stress straight down on the roof and my cause it to oscillate up and down. This may eventually cause cracking. By installing vertically on the sides, you use shear strength of the bolts themselves. If you have access to the roofs vertical sides from the inside, you could easily spread the weight out even more by sandwiching it with 1/4" aluminum adhered to the inside vertical face. How much does your Canoe weigh + the rack weight? Divide that weight by how many points of contact it has to the roof via the rack. This will give you an idea of how much weight you are dealing with on each mount location. If you use 3 cross bars, instead of 2 you will gain additional support for the canoe, and reduce more weight at each mount location.

RE: chalet triple slide

I guess one has to question why you would spend 45K on a camper you need to buy an F450 or F550 for, when you could get a 5th wheel that is more spacious & luxurious for a fraction of the cost (taking the truck into account)? It seems that it is pushing the envelope in terms of height & weight & cost, that it may have reached the point where it has lost many of the advantages inherent in being a truck camper. I don't think the similar Okanagan sold all that well. I wonder how many triple slide Hosts have been sold? They are the obvious competition. If Eagle cap comes out with one, I suspect the market will be over saturated, if it is not already in this economy. Lets compare pics. and heights just for curiosity. My '07' AF 990 sits on a '07' Dodge 3500 DRW and is 12'2" to the top of the satellite dish. I don't worry about ripping my roof all that much with a tree limb, figure I'll feel it and hear it as the limb is tearing all the other stuff up there off before that happens. Hey Mooney and Brian, how tall exactly are you guys? I have seen pics. of your rigs many times in your posts as well as many others. Can't recall seeing a picture of your rig 'tcman' or remember you saying how tall you are. I'm gunna go out on a limb here and take a wild guess that this is "tcman's" camper. To me it looks just about as tall as your's BlueStilly, as well as mine. http://www.truckcamperforums.com/galleryimages/1236448998/gallery_1_69_74851.jpg

RE: DIY 4' Hitch Extension Mod Fabrication

I agree with the need to increase the length of the frame attachment area. That is a major factor with the SuperHitch in regards to handling the stresses applied to the truck frame. Adding a WD system will make the ride really nice, and tie everything together smoothly. If you don't have a "V" tongue on your boat trailer, you may have more difficulty finding a suitable WD system without some tinkering to get it setup. Also, looking at the picture below, you may want to go back and double wall the tip of your hitch tube to keep it from flaring over time. Just copy your other two receiver tubes. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy174/scott_pdx/Hitch%20Extension%20Fabrication/hitch_final_result.jpg

RE: TC Gathering Planning

Solitude 10 Sleepy... sure hope you meant 1 not 10 ;) 1,2,3,4.5,6,7,8,9,and 10... solitude I don't like camp grounds... anytime, any where. Smokey fires when the temp is 110°F just doesn't make sense... I have asthma. Barking dogs and p00p piles in the grass.. not for me Drunks, drugs, and boom boxes... not for me Loud trucks, motor cycles, and ATV's... you guessed it I've been in a caravan of TC's once... it wasn't fun... we passed many things that we'd have normally stopped for. It's amazing how nice the world is when we avoid all of those things :B Geez....Sleepy. With that kind of rap sheet, you and I will probably never cross paths. :S

RE: New Triple Slide

As far as I know a Snowbird & Snowriver camper were identical except for the logo. Both were made to Oregon State standards which apparently are the stickiest. The story I heard on the name was first of all, as someone mentioned, SB was already used in the US, also Midtown RV in Penticton was the exclusive Canadian distributor & owned the name Snowbird. Maybe they provided some investment in the company when it first started. Maybe Mr Mehrer, if he sees this, can enlighten. I guess he can post now he has closed the business down. Not sure which camper you have 'tcman'. Your profile says you have a "2006 Snowriver 9 ft 6" and a "2006 SnowBird 9'6". Do you own 1 of each? ........ He doesn't own either. That's because he really owns a 2008 Snowriver "Prestige Signature Series" 10.8. Right Beddows? :R

My cargo trailer's roof is sealed along all seams with Eternabond. The entire exo is smooth painted aluminum. It's on there to stay.

RE: Do you need cabover struts?

Struts are like icecream Apple pie is good, apple pie with ice cream is unbelieveably good. My first thought was to use an analagy about s*x s*x is good by yourself... much, much better with your partner :B Sometimes first class is worth it, this is one of those times. Now that you are of the respected elder class, you probably don't get to enjoy any of those analogies anymore, huh? :B

RE: Do you need cabover struts?

Are cabover struts really needed? I have seen some with and some without. I have a F450 Crew Cab and the TC will not come past the roof of the truck so the struts would be very short if only going from the roof to the TC. Nope. My camper and truck combo were matched properly to avoid the issue of oscillation in the first place.

RE: Yamaha generator gas cap venting

One way to find out if it is vented is to purchase a second cap and go for it. If it won't pull a vacuum, then the tank is vented elsewhere. Shorter way to the answer would be to call Yamaha and ask them directly.

RE: BATTERY CHARING WHEN DRY CAMPING??

Back to the original poster's question. What we do is this. During the bustle of the day when I am just dinking around camp, I throw my batteries on the charger. I have them connected to the camper via quick disconnect. Start up the Honda and let it get a head start warming up. Plug the camper to the Honda so that we continue to have power. Then disconnect the batteries from the camper and hook them up to the charger. Of course the charger is also running off the Honda at the same time. We do this off and on maybe an hour here, two hours there depending on how much time we are actually at camp. Ohhh, and this is only in the winter. In the summer, we don't hardly ever need to do anything with the batteries for at least 4 to 5 days, as we never run anything that pulls much power like a heater would. My stand alone charger is a VEC1097A Vector Smart Charger, 30/10/02 amp charge rate with an 80 Amp Engine Start option. Also has a battery reconditioning feature for bringing a sick battery back to life. This feature alone has recovered several weak batteries back to solid ground for my buddies.

RE: Snow Camping?

The wife and I get up to Diamond Lake on Superbowl Weekend to avoid EVERYONE else. Started camping off the grid after up there after showing up in 2008 with a blizzard going on. They couldn't get the roads cleared fast enough, so they didn't bother plowing out the campground. That year and this year we decided to just dry camp in the boat launch parking lot. Had the place completely to ourselves, with lake and mountain views. http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4625.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4567.jpg It got down to about 11ºF at night and up to nearly 45ºF during the day. Our routine was to use the batteries during the night, and while we were out riding, or walking in the snow. But while we were just fart'n around camp, we ran the generator. We never had any issues with anything freezing on us, as the basement is heated with the first outlet duct from the heater. We keep the cab passthru window cracked half way to give us fresh air at night, and let the humidity controlled Fantastic Fan do it's thing throughout the night as well. We actually had to open another window to keep the camper cool during the day time this year as it was so dang sunny. The camper would climb to 70ºF from just the UV, if we didn't crack the window. We locked the Honda up under the truck, and hooked it up to a sippy cup (boat fuel tank), so that I never had to pull it out to refill it. Just start it up and let it run. http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4634.jpg It is definitely worth camping in the snow. Got some great nature/snow pics from 2009 trip, as it was clear all 4 days we were up there. Not a drop of precip while there. Unlike 2008 which dumped nearly 4 feet in 24 hours. That cut our trip short as they had to close all the dang highways for a week, once we got out of there. These pics were all done on a cheap 3 Megapickle camera. We now have a nice compact waterproof, rugged 10 Megapickle camera for next year. :C http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4581.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4592.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-29-09%20Thursday/IMG_4609.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-30-09%20Friday/IMG_4650.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-31-09%20Saturday/IMG_4670.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-31-09%20Saturday/IMG_4673.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-31-09%20Saturday/IMG_4677.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-31-09%20Saturday/IMG_4687.jpg http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt128/INSAYN_BCR/Diamond%20Lake%202009/1-31-09%20Saturday/IMG_4689.jpg
