RE: upgrade window shades

I replaced all the shades in our coach with MCDs. Both wife and I love them. Did it myself, and it was more difficult removing the HR installed day/night shades than it was installing the MCDs.

RE: Where and How to buy RV?

I'm not sure where in CA you are, but it might be worth it to take a look at the DeMartini web site. They're in Grass Valley and I've bought my last two coaches there. My brother just drove up from LA to buy a new Georgetown there as well. I'm sure they can explain what's necessary to take delivery from them outside CA to avoid the taxes, but I think you need to prove you used the coach outside the state for some period of time, six months or a year, if the law still reads that way. Since I live in CA, I decided to just keep it simple and legal and paid the taxes.

RE: Chassis Battery

I have a five year old Scepter and have replaced the chasis batteries five times. Luckily, the first time Monaco replaced under warranty, the remainder were replaced under warranty by the shop that services the coach. Each time the batteries tested totally dead. After the fourth set, they asked to have the coach to check out the electrical system and found nothing wrong. Even with the battery cut off swich off, there is still a samll drain on the chassis batteries for the various engine and transmission modules. I switched to storage with plug in facilities and still had a problem. Service shop checked with Monaco and discovered that the chassis batteries only charge when engine is running, so being plugged in makes no difference. Monaco offfered a replacement module to charge the chassis batteries while on shore power, but it was less expensive to have the shop instal a trickle charger. No problems since. Amazing what they leave out of the owner's manual. Good Lcuk.

RE: Looking for new insurance

WE had Progressive for 10 years and the premiums went up every year. I assumed it was because we had moved up to more expensive coaches. We're had the last coach five years and the premiums went up 50% with the only claim being $70 to fix a windshield chip. When I received this years notice, it was up another 40% due, they said, to my wife having a chargable accident. Ten days and lots of faxes and phone calls later, they agreed their data was incorrect and lowerd the premium to ONLY a 20% increase over the previous year. I went with Forrmost, a Farmers company. Premium was 40% lower than Progressive's "adjusted" rate, higher coverage and included road service and towing.

RE: Any guiding principles on parking a 43' DP?

When we moved up from 33' gas to 36' DP, we took a two day RV driving class. great insights and it served us well for the three years we had that coach. We moved up again to a 40' DP and decided to store it indoors. I had a terrible time backing it into the garage since the coach was 40' and the drive in front of the storage garage was only 44' wide. I turned again to a driving school and hired an instructor for a day to review. He made it simple for me to park the coach and also introduced us to something called rv headsets, a pair of headsets with microphones that make it possible to hear and speak with the spotter hands free. They're great and make parking the coach in the garage a piece of cake, although with his instructions I could probably do it without a spotter if necessary. Both classes were time and money well spent. One point others have mentioned, in CA, over 40' you need a special license, under 40' standard one is OK.

RE: Rivering on steer tire

Goodyears came from the factory on my last two coaches. Both had rivering. Second coach I had front end aligned and checked at 9K miles, problem still developed). Simmple solution for me, replaced Goodyears and had no further problems on either coach.

RE: Tiffin Motorhomes with Tankless Water Heater

We have the Aqua Hot in our coach and love it. As much hot water as we could want.

RE: Retire?

My wife and I decided that we couldn't justify a coach while we worked. We worked 12 to 14 hrs a day 5 to 6 days a week. No vacation for first 12 years of marriage. Worked well for us, we retired at 55 and are on our third coach, 40 foot quad slide DP. 100K miles on three coaches so far. Schedule may no be for everyone, just what worked well for us.

RE: MCD Sades

Installed duo on all windows on our coach (7) except bath and front window. Hardest part was getting the old day/night shades removed. Doing entire coach took just a couple of hours.

RE: Towing a larger class A

When my '07 HR DP 40' was a year old the shop doing routine service noticed a problem. Cummins wanted it towed to their distributor to make repairs under warranty. Called CoachNet and no problem. They indicated that it was too tall to use a flatbed, but sent out the largest tow truck I'd ever seen. Driver was very knowledgable, disconnected driver shaft as well as removed front generator exhaust that was in the way. Put all parts in a bay and after Cummins completed repairs they reassembled everything including generator exhaust. I asked the tow driver the cost and he said they only sent out his rig for very large loaded trucks or CoachNet DPs. He said without road service they billed $400/hour for his rig.

RE: Would you take out a warranty on a used RV?

This question comes up very often. It depends on if the policy gives you peace of mind. We're on our third coach and have had a policy on all three. Will exstend the current one when it expires in two years. The cost quoted is very high. I've been able to purchase usually at half of the first quote.

RE: Slide Removal

Check with Oregon Motor Coach Center in Eugene. When I was there they had a number of coaches in their shop with slides removed for repair. They also remodel coaches and add slides so they are very knowledgeable.

RE: Window shade removal

Shades in my 07 Scepter were also mounted directly to the valance with screws through the shade header. Once I found the screws, removal was easy with an extension on the drill without removing the valance. New ones were mounted with brackets that also went in without removing the valance.

RE: New purchase options

Had the Dometic in our coach replaced with a Samsung French door refrigerator and love it. Ordering new I'd go for the residential electric for sure. We have Aqua-Hot for hot water and heat. A little more maintenance, but wouldn't go back to propane/electric tank style. Both of these are perfect for us.

RE: Slideout Problem

Had a problem with the slide on my Scepter and power gear was very helpful. They indicated that for my Monaco, there is a control board the senses an increase in current draw when the slide reaches the end of it's travel and then cuts power to the motor.

RE: Dash A/C blower stopped working?

Not the same coach but the dash air blower stopped working on my 2007 Scepter. Checked dash connections and found a connector had seperated. Plugged back in and worked fine for another month then stopped again. Returned to dealer who found a loose connection at the resistors for blower. He tightened and it's worked fine for last two years. Check wiring,it may be a simple fix.

RE: To Tow or not to Tow.. senior grammma

Good to see another NorCal RVer. We towed many miles with 33 foot Pace Arrrow with no problem before we upgraded. Towed both a Suzuki and Saturn. Currently tow Saturn Vue which we love. We use Roadmaster tow bar. Very often I'll hook up toad while my wife sleeps in a little. Very easy, go for it.

RE: Possible Long Term Property

There are many RV parks where you own the site, similar to owning a condo. Usually the park will rent out the site for you when you aren't using it. The ones I've seen seemed expensive and then there are the monthly charges. As I've thought about this, the one problem to consider is maintenance and upkeep. Rather than own something when you come off the road, perhaqps the thing to do is to take whatever you wold use to buy and put that into an investment account. When the time comes use that income to move into a nice retirement community as a tenant. Anything goes wrong, you just call the office. You want to travel, lock the door and go. Just some thoughts from someone that's not there yet either.
