RE: Coach/house side 12V diagnostics on a '94 Vogue

----- 7 months later -----
I'm going to revive this thread because I need further input. Since I replaced the fuse in June, I've blown 3 more fuses - 2 in the last month while we were parked. The latest was today and I think that I can link it to when I tried to fire up our 120V air compressor in the basement.
Our current electrical connections are:
- 50A outlet to
- 50A autoformer to
- 50A surgeguard to coach
When I switched on the compressor, the electric motor cycled once or twice and then the surgeguard cut out. I rechecked the connections and restarted the compressor and it charged up but never would restart after that and the surgeguard kicked out each time.
Any thoughts how running 120V AC in the basement might cause the 225A primary fuse connecting the 12V DC battery bank to the rest of the coach to blow? My gut says that the Heart Freedom 25 charger/inverter is somehow involved but I don't see how.

that is a better bug out vehicle than my DP
Probably more expensive than your DP too. All for a tree trimming truck on steroids.

RE: Need help diagnosing a Norcold 683

Thanks all. I unplugged the thermister and am waiting to see what that does.
I did use my IR thermometer on the tubes on the back and the bottom two were running 116/118*, the third from the bottom was 86* and the ones above that were 75*. I'm suspecting that that indicates a blockage and the need for a new cooling unit.

RE: Need help diagnosing a Norcold 683

Freezer seems to be holding at 29*
Current outside temp is 46*
High today was in the low 60's
Low last night was in the upper 20's
Sounds like I may be looking at an Amish cooling unit or a home refrigerator.

Need help diagnosing a Norcold 683

Our '94 Vogue came with a Norcold 683 refrigerator. We've been living in the coach for the last several months and have a pair of 12V fans on the interior cooling fins to facilitate cooling and minimize frost. Usually we run the refrigerator on electric with the temperature setting at 3 out of 5 and usually the refrigerator temperature stays in the mid-30's.
Today I noticed that the refrigerator temperature was over 40 and that the usual frost on the fins was melted so I turned down the temperature to 4 out of 5. The temperature continued to rise so I switched from electric to gas. At the moment, the refrigerator temperature has reached 50* with the temperature setting all the way at 5.
I have checked in the back of the refrigerator and when on gas, the flame is lit.
I don't smell ammonia or see any yellow leak. (Does that somewhat eliminate a leak in the cooling unit?)
All of the electrical/electronic indicators and switches seem to operate normally. (Does that eliminate a dead control board?)
We have been parked in the same place for over a month and the fridge has worked fine up till today and coach is level to within less than 1* so I don't think that it's due to an out-of-level issue.
Thought on where to look next?

RE: Theoretical Allison MD3060R question

OK, that's good to know.
The next question is - is there a way to hotwire the transmission into gear once it's gone to neutral?
Part of the reason that I ask is that I sat on the road for 2 hours with a broken throttle cable the other year waiting for a wrecker before I finally rigged a hand throttle and limped off the road and to a safe parking place. Knowing how to hotwire the transmission into gear just might come in handy some day.

Theoretical Allison MD3060R question

I know that I sometimes think too much and over-prepare but I've recently wondered if there was a way to get a MD3060 into limp-home mode in the event that the ECU was dead and no tow was readily available. Anyone know of a way to bypass the electronics on the MD3060 even it it's only to get into 1st or reverse?

RE: OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY PD4501 now mine

Just saw another one of those old coaches sitting at a salvage/towing yard in Chickasha Oklahoma about two weeks ago. Looks like it only arrived there recently. Wish someone would rescue it.
Can't wait to see updates on how this one is revived.

RE: Flushing with grey water

Two thoughts off-hand - I may have missed where you included in but if you didn't already, you may want to include some basic filtration between the grey water tank and the pump to make cleaning out the hair and soap scum easier than having to pull the pump screen.
Second, if I were doing it, I'd try to find some way to disable the grey water pump when the three way valve is set to fresh water. Either a physical interlock of some sort or an electrical lockout where that pump could not be powered up until the valve was set to grey water.
Other than those thoughts, it sounds to me like it should do what you are trying to accomplish. As a pre-construction test, I'd go draw a bucket of couple day old bath water from the grey water tank, bring it inside for a few hours, and let DW give it a good sniff to see if the odor is going to be an issue.

RE: What's the Scoop on GOOP? Now you know!

Amazing GOOP® and Craft GOOP® contain a thinner formula for precise, detailed work.
Wood & Furniture GOOP® is a thicker, non-slump formula perfect for vertical and overhead applications.
Automotive GOOP®, Household GOOP® and Plumbing GOOP® are all the same formula.
Lawn & Garden GOOP®, Marine GOOP®, RV GOOP® and Sport and Outdoor GOOP® are all UV-resistant.
Shoe GOO® is a more rubbery formula allowing for greater flexibility.
You must be thinking of different GOOP than the Goop that I have in my toolbox. I do agree that it's a great product for cleanup in all the above-mentioned situations.

RE: What's the Scoop on GOOP? Now you know!

Personally... I think that old line about only needing two things in your tool box (Duct tape and WD-40) Should be upgraded to 3 things.. GOOP being #1.
I use a lot of it around here, fantastic stuff, I don't know what I'd be doing without it. !!!!!
# 4. baling wire.

RE: Temporarily Disabled with Bad Ankle

Good for you RVToadless. Mental preparation is a big part of it but don't apologize for asking for supernatural help and please don't hesitate to ask for help, especially for things like refueling. Most stations that I've been to have signage indicating that some assistance is available unless there is only one attendant on duty.
Link to ADA gas assistance
Good luck and safe travels.

RE: travel berkey

We use a Berkey Lite for all of our drinking and cooking water. Whenever we pull in, we set it on the dinette and fill it. Wouldn't drink from the freshwater tank without running it thru the Berkey but that's just us, YMMV.

RE: 8D battery, replace or get something different?

Space may be an issue. In our coach, they used two 8D batteries side-by-side for the house part and another 8D for the chassis. I replaced the two 8D house batteries with six SAMs Club 6V golf cart batteries and the six 6V batteries just barely fit the battery box. I think that you'll find you can only fit three 6V batteries in the space of one 8D. Price last year was under $70 each before tax and core.
If you load your own batteries, don't make the same mistake that I made and grab an 8V instead of a 6V. Didn't catch the error until I got to the register and had to go back.

RE: 80-90's with solid fiberglass roofing? Least seams possible?

If you are looking at something from later years, look at Rexhall. The Rexhall fiberglass roof was a "hat" and came over the top of the end caps, so no roof seams. Only other fiberglass coach that does not have roof seams would be an Americoach which is a piece of garbage that I would strongly recommend avoiding.
The one-piece roof "hat" sounds like how our Vogue is constructed and some of the older ones, gas especially, are pretty inexpensive. Here is an ad that shows what they look like (I am not affiliated with this coach in any way.)

RE: 80-90's with solid fiberglass roofing? Least seams possible?

I think that the many of the Foretravels had a one-piece fiberglass roof as did many of the Vogues. I know that our '94 Vogue Prima Vista has a one-piece fiberglass roof.
Might also look at the Wanderlodge. Not fiberglass but I'd guess that they seal up pretty good.

RE: Walmart Prescriptions Part Deux

We use Walgreens and haven't had any major issues except with restricted drugs; however, be aware that we've been told that some (not sure which) prescriptions can only be transferred once and then you have to get a new script.
As far as ease of use, I just log onto Walgreens web site and select which prescriptions I want to refill and then select which store I want to pick it up at and hit submit. I've used this method from New Mexico to New York for our non-restricted medications. We do sometimes have to allow time for them to order it in but that's usually only a day or two and I usually call ahead (after sending in the order) to verify that everything is ready before going to pick them up. As always, YMMV.

RE: Temporarily Disabled with Bad Ankle

When I tore up my ankle, the Dr put me in a boot/brace that pretty well immobilized it. If you didn't get something like that, you might ask the Dr about some sort of brace or even a walking cast to get you from where you are to where you need to be.
Good luck with your trip and hope that ankle heals quickly.
