RE: Driving south past Rancho Buganvilias in Michoacan

Yes thanks Sandy. We were planning on doing that stretch in March on our way North. Is the Playa Azul- La Placita just as dangerous or is it La Placita and North?

RE: Pharr or Los Indios Crossings

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like either one will work. Maybe we will try Los Indios.

Bici Map Micro SD Card

I recently purchased the Bici Mexico Map micro SD Chip. I have a Garmin Nuvi 855. When I put the SD card in the slot it will not unlock the maps. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem might be.

Pharr or Los Indios Crossings

We have narrowed it down to these two crossings. Would like to know what experiences anyone has had at these crossings this year. Is one better than the other? I note where the Banjercito is open at 8am at Pharr and Los Indios is 9am so Pharr would probably be our first choice. Other questions...
1) What was the wait time like? Would like to make it to Ciudad Victoria the first night.
2) Any recommendations for campgrounds close by?
3) Is it possible to go the day before and get your vehicle permit and tourist cards??
Thanks

RE: SINDICATURA

There is a site online where you can join for $25.00. They will send you a package that includes SINDICATURA decals and info on what to do if stopped by police.

SINDICATURA

Has anyone heard of or joined this organization? Apparently it is a Mexican organization that fights corruption and is supposed to help if you get stopped by a dishonest police officer.

RE: Butane Scam

We have had no other problems except at that one spot. I am certainly not painting everyone with the same brush. Just wanted to give a head's up about this station.

Butane Scam

I have been meaning to post this since last winter. There is a butane station outside Melaque. It is on Mex 200 south of Melque/Barre de Navidad. Had a couple of problems with these guys last year. The first time was when we were camping in Chamela. Another camper in the campground was going to make the drive to Melaque for butane and asked if anyone else needed any. I gave him my 20lb'er and he had 2 others plus his making it 4 altogether. When he got to the filling station he unloaded the 4 tanks and the guys took them to be filled. When they brought them back they seemed nice enough and even put them in the back of his truck. He never checked them till he got back to Chamela and found that they had only filled 2 but charged for 4. Rip off #1.
About a week later we left Chamela and headed south. As mine was one of the tanks that did not get filled I stopped at the same place to have it filled. They took the tank to fill it. A few minutes later I was told that there was a leak in my on/off valve and they couldn't fill it unless they repaired it. I thought this funny as the tanks were fairly new. They could fix it for 100 pesos. So I said yes go ahead. Then I thought I should check on these guys and see what they were up to. They had taken my valve out and were replacing it with something out of the dark ages. An old rusty valve. I said forget it and put my old valve back in. They did what I asked and gave me back my 100 pesos. I couldn't wait to get to the next butane filling station to see if my tank would be ok. Sure enough we stopped at a place outside Manzanillo and they had no problem filling my tank

RE: Crossing & Route To Ciudad Victoria

We live in Mexico, Lake Chapala, and keep our RV in La Feria, between McAllen & Harlingen. We usually cross at McAllen. Last time, we crossed at Nuevo Progresso, hoping that the bypass of Reynosa from the 2 to the 97 south would be complete. It was not, but should be this time. However, if not, we will return to using the Reynosa entry as the facilities there are quite good and if you know the bypass route, you miss much of the town.
To do this, after you come out of the document place, go LEFT and stay on that road, ignore the green and whites. It is a two lane that winds a bit. You come to a junction where the left side goes up a small hill, you'll notice most of the traffic taking this road. Then just stay on it until you cross the 2, there is only on traffic light, I believe. Follow signs to C. Victoria, it will put you right on the road headed south, Mex97.
What route do you take to get to Lake Chapala Dan????

RE: Crossing & Route To Ciudad Victoria

We normally cross at Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras but with the cop hassle in Monclova we are looking to try a different route. Which is the best crossing and route to get to Ciudad Victoria. Thought we would try that way to get to the Michoacan coast (Playa Azul) and then head south from there.Looking at the Pharr Int Bridge as that seems like a good crossing. Any help on this would be muchly appreciated amigos!!!!
JerBearSomething doesn't make sense here....You are trying to stay clear of a small town that takes 5 minutes to drive through and has 1 or 2 rogue cops, who have been reported to the authorities. Yet you are driving into and through the one State in Mexico, Michoacan, which is known for their unrest, kidnappings and killings :h I don't quite follow this line of reasoning :S
You bring up a valid point. It was our understanding that most of the unrest was on the coast of Michoacan. I guess our thinking was that by crossing around Brownsville and heading south from there we would bypass Mex 200. Maybe we should rethink this route......

RE: Monclova - Still a Problem?

Hey Paul..do you always go straight through town? Last year we went through town on our way down and no problem. On our way back we took the ring road and that is when we had the problem with the police.

RE: Fresh Water Bass Lakes In Jalisco & Michoacan States

Large mouth bass are aplenty in the reservoir near El Tule, south of Puerto Vallarta. To find out what they taste like, visit the small restaurant at lakeside, called "Lobelias," where they (at least they used to) keep a few swimming around in a large tank. You pick out the one to keep you company at the dinning table.
There is a lot of surface area on the lake, many small islands were left once the water rose, making for interesting vistas. Military macaws thrive and call one area of the lake home, these are fantastic to see in the wild. Duck hunting is popular here, as rice fields downstream of the reservoirs get devistated by these birds, so the hunt up on the lake is very much encouraged.
Is there camping at this lake?
