RE: Theft at campgrounds

If we leave the RV for any long period of time, or at night, we usually move the chairs, BBQ's and things that could easily walk off, under the awning near the trailer. I also lock the storage compartment doors. I can't say that I have ever had anyone come around the campsite with the intent to steal anything in the 10 years we been camping though.

RE: Novice in need of Advise

"will my truck be able to handle it?" Probably yes, but will the truck handle it well? Maybe not so we well. It depends on a lot of variables. How you load up the TT, how much hill/mountain driving you will do, how fast you intend to drive and your brakes. If you intend to be basically a flat-lander, you'll probably OK. Try it out and see how much of a strain it seems to be on the engine, transmission, brakes.

RE: Campground shower button

See if you can find a strip of double sided velcro. Push the button wrap the velcro around the valve with the button pushed in, and secure the strap. When done take the velcro with you. Just a thought.

RE: US-171 Shreveport to Lake Charles

No reason not to travel on 171. It's a bit slower, more towns and lower speed limits, but as I recall the road is fine. I usually take 49 south out of Shreveport to about Natchitoches exit, hiway 6 I believe, go west short distance and pickup hiway 117 and head south down to Leesville, then pick up 171 south to Lake Charles. I think I save some time by not going through so many small towns all the way on 171.

RE: What is the most essential thing most newbies forget?

Couple of suggestions for newbies- 1) Before your first trip, take a couple of hours at some large parking lot, and practice backing up into marked out space; 2) Never, never, never un-hook your hitch from your TV without chocking your tires first. I know you would say "no one is that dumb", I seen people get in a hurry and forget it. I'll admit doing it once myself.

RE: Has anyone bought a trailer from out of state?

I live in Louisiana and purchased my first TT from a dealer in New Hampshire. Put my deposit down thru VISA, and made arrangements to drive up to get it in two weeks. Drove up and verified it's new condition, paid for it without sales tax, and drove it with a temporary vehicle tag. Made arragements to spent the first night in the TT at the dealership to verify everything was in good woking order. What wasn't right, they fixed the next morning. I paid La. sales tax when I registered the TT and got my vehicle tag. No fuss, no bother, very easy and no compliants.

Internet access when full timing

DW & I are considering full timing, and would like to know what you full timers are utilizing for your secure internet access. I've not had very good success with most of the wifi reception at CG's, that claim to provide wifi. Plus wifi doesn't seem to be too secure. I'd appreciate some input on what is working well for you, and if you'd go the same way again. Thanks all for your input.

RE: Backing a 5ver vs. a trailer?

For me the TT was easier to back into the camp sites. The 5er is more difficult for me, but it's very workable. With the turning pivot point is right over the axel so it takes alot more travel to get the pivot pt moving in the direction you want to go. The TT back-up turns are more responsive because the hitch pt is much further away from the axel and swings quicker, making for better turning response.

RE: Fall Colors in the Southwest

Red an article not long ago rating top ten national forests for fall color, and they list Coconino N.F. in AZ as #6 I think. Might check it out.

GPS system melt down in near future?

I've heard some heresay that the GPS system satellites only have a limited operating life, and that the satellites could start shutting down in a not so distant future, say in the neighborhood of 10 years. Does anyone on this forum have any good reliable data of when the GPS system will start to shut down, and is there any gov't or private industry planning to replace the satellites before the old ones stop working? Thanks for your input.

Using US Visa Card in Canada

Wife and I will be taking a 20 day trip into Ontario, Canada area in the Spring and would like to know if there is any advice you could offer as to why we shouldn't utilize out U.S. Visa credit card for most of our purchases while in Canada, rather than convert to Canadian dollars for everything. Your comments would be appreciated. Thanks

RE: Trouble with holding tanks

I would get a "Flush King" attachment for the sewer outlet connection, and try the following: Attach the Flush King assembly to the sewer connection; attach the sewer hose from the Flush King to a sewer connection; hook up a clean water supply to the Flush King back flush hose connection, make sure the back flush shut off valve on the Flush King is closed, and open the clean water supply valve; close the sewer outlet valve on the Flush King; open the the black water tank drain valve, do not open any gray water tank drain valves; start opening the Flush King back flush valve; you should see water coming into the Flush King and flowing into the black water tank; the clean water supply pressure should break loose any stoppage in your drain line or at the tank outlet connection; once you establish back flushing into the tank, shut off the back flushing valve and drain the tank by opening the Flush King sewer outlet valve. Repeat several times till tank water is pretty clear, then leave 5-6 gallon of water in the tank, with about a cup of laundry detergent down the toilet, to swash around in the tank while on the road. Hopes this helps.

Road conditions early Spring, Great Lakes Region

Need some input from RV'ing buddies up North. DW wants to make loop around the Great Lakes in the Spring. We are looking at traveling from Tronto to Duluth in the April 20th to the 30th time frame. My concern is snow melt turning to ice at night and having to pull my 5ver on it. Looking for advice and input on the usual road conditions at that time of year. Thanks for any assistance.

RE: Keystone Challenger 5th wheel

I have a '06 Challanger 5th wheel, model 29rls, that we have been pleased with so far. Biggest grips so far has been the E-Z wash systm for the black water tank has never worked, and the pocket door, going into the bedroom is always off it's track and gets jammed. As you can see, these are both minor problems that I've accepted to live with. Overall, it has been fine. Just make sure you look at all your water tubing connections for drips first thing when you get it. I had about 4 leaking connections that I tightened. I like my 5er, but it is not made for full timing IMO.

diesel performance in mountains

I'm mainly a flat lander; not much experience in the mountains above 8000 ft, but I'm planning a trip that will take me into the Rockies from New Mexico, thru Colorado, and into Canada. I'm expecting a lot of traveling with my 5th wheel at about 10,000 ft elev. My question is how much impact is the elev. to the operation of my 2500 HD Duramax diesel? Will I notice any drop in engine performance at these higher elevations, and do I need to be aware of anything special that I wouldn't be aware of at the lower elevations? Thanks in advance your input.

RE: Anyone swtich TT to 5th-wheels?

We started RV'ing with a TT. Wasn't quite sure the wife would like RV'ing, so didn't want to invest too must money in something she might not like. Tried the TT for 2 1/2 yrs, before deciding to upgrade to a 5th whl. For us the 5th whl has alot more storage space, and cabin space (5th whl has slide-out in bedroom and in living/dining area; the basement also allows me to take a lot more gear too. Can't think of a reason why I would want to go back to a TT. But, I had to up-grade from a 1/2 T tow vehicle to a 3/4 T diesel TV also.

RE: How to store things in the trailer

Most of our dishes, plates, bowls, glasses and cups are non-breakable material. However, my wife usually has a layer or that non-skid rubber like material between each of them to keep them from sliding around. Some smaller items she has in plastic containers when on the road. Trailers with rear kitchens usually have more problems with dishes bouncing around, and keep cupboard doors closed when traveling. Although, I don't think it's a significant problem.

RE: My tire story

I assume this is the first tire change on your '04. Hopefully you got 4 good years of use from those Mission tires. I suspect getting 4 to 5 years of use from any mfr's tire is about all one can expect. Glad you saw the flat when you did. Did you find out what caused the flat tire in the first place?

RE: Help stuck in the driveway wont charge

Check to see if there is a fuse between the alternator and the battery connection; then clean the battery terminals and cable connecters; verify your ground connection if clean and solidly grounded. Verify that the alternator is actually delivering current to the batteries.
