Ford or GM?

I'm looking to buy a used truck for the purpose of utility and to place a camper on when we go camping. The truck will be a 1 ton (350/3500) crew cab, long bed.
I've been having trouble finding something decent but I did find a 2008 Ford F350 SRW King Ranch truck with a 6.4L diesel engine and 108,000 miles in super clean shape. I am told that this engine doesn't perform well in the city but does ok on the highway and does tow well.
I've always been a GM guy and don't know a lot about Fords - especially trucks. But, the Ford has a good looking interior - especially the King Ranch. Since it will be a daily use vehicle during the winter in addition to long drives on the road going camping, having a nice interior is very appealing. But I don't want that to cloud my judgement on buying a vehicle.
So, I need your help - GM or Ford and why?

RE: "Trading the B"

I better not let Carolyn see this - she loves that rig. Good luck and thanks for hosting a B rally.

We are leaving tomorrow sometime and may be pulling into the campground very late. So if you see a van pulling in at midnight, accept our apology now for waking you up.

Will you still have the Roadtrek rig or is that going also?

RE: Do any of you guys camp in a "B"?

We don't use our B for travel - only camping. There are a couple of companies that make screens especially for the Class B motorhome. One of them is Skreenz. But, we don't have them installed on our unit.

RE: Mercedes based van or Ford/GM based van?

There are many reasons I don't like the Mercedes van; it looks top heavy and I don't like the narrow shape, having a generator that runs on diesel (as mentioned before) and availability of service (as mentioned before.
Another thing to consider though is the availability and cost of the diesel. Diesel used to be cheaper than gas but I've been watching the price of diesel rise considerably over the years and I have to wonder if that trend is going to continue as the demand for diesel keeps increasing.
Also, we boondock a lot and some of the places we go are pretty remote - finding gas is much easier than finding diesel.

Punderson State Park is open all year but it's about 30 miles southeast of the Clinic: Punderson State Park

RE: 97 Dodge 2500 5.2 liter 97,000 miles runs hot?????

My 5.9 liter engine runs hot also so I put a heavy duty fan clutch in it. The older Dodge engines do run hotter than others.

Oh Shoot - I forgot about that bridge. It's not the driving across the bridge that scares me, it's the thought of driving off the bridge that scares me. If my vertigo takes over and I get possessed or something, it's all over.

RE: Truck camper or class B

I like them both for different reasons.
My wife and I go camping a lot and are able to boondock with the B very nicely. She likes the capability of getting up and using the bathroom or grabbing a soft drink and snack while driving that the B gives her. I like the ability of being able to park and sit in comfort without getting out until very bad weather clears up.
I'd like to have a truck and camper for those times I want to go exploring on really bad roads or thru mud and snow. I also like the flexibility of dropping the camper at the campsite and just going off and exploring on those forest roads with just the truck.
Actually, I'd like to have both.

RE: Duallys on my PW

Not that you would care about this, but I've read that driving in snow with dully's can be a real hazard. I don't know if that's really true or not.
Anxious to see some pictures.

We can only attend on the weekend before the Memorial day weekend - the usual one. Since the survey doesn't allow for just one choice, please accept this as our vote.

RE: Tenth Annual RV.net Class B Rally (B10)

Magnumiii, maybe you would like to host a rally - maybe in Florida - in January.
While it's true that it may be a little cooler in Upper Michigan in May, it's also the reason we have coats, camp fires and enclosed rec areas.
However, the way the weather has been in the last few years, who knows how cool or how hot it will be. B6 in northern Ohio was hot, B7 in northern NY was hot. Both of those were in May also. B5 in southern Ohio was cool, but was one of the best rallies we ever had.

RE: Amazing

You might want to call Phil at PW before you proceed. He's got a wealth of knowledge about all the units and may be able to suggest something.

RE: Amazing

I don't believe PW would build a unit that did not have a house battery in it.
I have a '97 Excel MPL and the house battery is under the back seat/sofa - driver's side. You have to lift up the lid to access it. Check it out.
