RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

John & Angela and crandle,
How does your Mexico expenses compare to home expenses if you did not travel to Mexico? What is/would be the biggest difference?
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
That is a tuffy for a couple of reasons. We are full time RVers (but not in our little C but rather in a larger 40 footer.) If we did stay home either in Canada or Palm Springs we would have no camp ground costs as we own our lots both north and south. I am guessing that we would probably be closer to 45 to 50 bucks a day if we didn't travel as that is what we seem to spend when we are on our lot in Canada. The 85 dollars a day is a self imposed budget so although we could (and would like to) probably spend more quite simply in our case...we just can't. We are still fairly young (late 40's) in the game so long term planning, budgeting and saving are an absolute necesity for us.
Bottom line is fuel is a huge part of the equation. This year we will probably clock up close to 9000 kilometers in just over three months in Mexico. At 12 miles per gallon it sucks up the budget pretty quick. We do find it slightly cheaper to travel in Mexico than either the US or Canada. However if you are ok with setting up on a nice beach with minimal services (eg solar power, delivered water etc) I think you could quite comfortably winter in Mexico for around 30 to 40 dollars per day including some eating out, entertainment etc. There are lots of VERY NICE places to do this in Mexico. It's the travelling that gets ya.
Does this help.

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

We actually keep track of costs as we are on a budget. If you do extended dry camping on various ejido beaches at 60 -80 pesos per day you are probably looking at about 50 bucks per day including entertainment food etc. We never seem to spend more than a week or two in one place so for us it is a mix of higher end camp grounds, dry camping, etc etc. We see all we can see and sample the food everywhere although we rarely do upscale touristy restaurants. We successfully tour Mexico on a budget of 85 dollars per day including everything....food, fuel etc. One day you may spend 15 bucks and the next 150 dpending on if you have to feed the gas tank etc. We do this in a 22 foot class c motorhome. Hopefully this was helpfull.

RE: Survey of Safe and Unsafe States in Mexico

For the non-Spanish speaking Mexico traveler, can someone summarize/point out the safest areas and the worst areas or at least the reported worst areas.
Thank you,
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
Hey ROCMOC. Its a big report and would be difficult to summarize but the tables and graphs towards the back are self ezplanatory. Click on this link The homicide info is on page 47 and you can see the best and worst states.

RE: Survey of Safe and Unsafe States in Mexico

I would have thought Chihuahua would have been the worst. I think the biggest surprise for us was the huge difference between best and worst. If you take the worst five out of the mix the average changes drastically. Some of our favourite spots seem to be above the average. Go figure. Interesting reading though and thanks for putting it out there Moisheh.

RE: Southern Mexico - Oaxaca Zippolite Eatery

Sounds like a plan. Do you know the GPS coodinates. One of the hardest things for me to do is to switch back and forth between french and spanish. For the first 5 minutes of of a coversation I tend to use the conjuctions (such as and or but) of the other language, It tends to be a little easier after 5 or 10 minutes or if I have had a couple beers. :). Does he have any camping spots or is there a campground close by??
Merci en avance.

RE: Credit Card Info

Sure varies from store to store though. You can walk into Home Depot in rancho mirage, pick some items, go to the till, swipe your credit card, no signature, no ID check, nada and walk out. Other places they ask for ID and you need a pin. Weird.

RE: PALM SPRINGS CA. 'RESERVATIONS OR??'

We had people show up during that time period last year and were able to get a spot. Try Outdoor Resorts Palm Springs in Cathedral city and you should be fine without a reservation. There are over 1200 sites here. With those kinda numbers there are always a few sites available. Heres a link.

Its a nice spot.

RE: Canadian Standards (CSA) Versus US Standards?

Maybe your reffering to a tax bracket (still way too high from what I can see from the charts) as opposed to actual amount paid as per the indexed tax rates. Symantics?

RE: Canadian Standards (CSA) Versus US Standards?

I heard that before, what does my 50% taxed income go towards? What does the 13% PST and GST on the majority of purchases go towards? Why can't I write off any of my mortgage interest? I think that if you sit down and do the math your 30% is a little conservative. If i can pick up a trailer in the US and save $6-10K what are the dealers making? It comes down to what the market will bear and the Canadian market tends to be out of sync. Regardless of the US Canadian curency sitting at $1.10 Canadian for $1.00 US this is not the reason for higher prices. Canadians are use to paying more and will pay more. Now I am venting.
Just curious. I have been in business in Canada for a long time and have always made a good income and have NEVER paid anywhere close to 50 percent income tax. What kind of income level would have a 50 percent tax rate. I took a quick look at the tax tables and can't see anything even close to that. Special circumstances???. Just curious.

RE: Canadian Standards (CSA) Versus US Standards?

Just a couple things different. The Neutral is treated differently in Canada.
Propane systems have some materials excluded for use that are allowed in the US.
Make sure your local dealer will perform warranty work. Can get a little dicey with electrical and propane systems as the tech is technically not allowed to work on a non conforming system without making it conform first. The easy answer here is to use a non ticketed tech as he won't care.
Propane tollerances also change from province to province.
It gets even goofier with motorhomes....ASMI tanks, daytime running lights. You simply won't be allowed to register it if it doesn;t comply. Trailers are usually not too much of an issue.
Hope it works out for you.

RE: Mexican Tracfone?

So speaking of cell phones. When we get across the line in a few weeks we want to "rechaare" our movistar with minutes. From what I aid understand there is a new procedure for activating cell phones in aid of the struggle against criminal orgaizations. Does anyone know the procedure I will have to do in order to reactivate our phone?
Thanks in advance.

We used to go to Emerald desert before the change four or five years ago. We ended up buying a lot in Outdoor Resorts Palm Springs in Cat city. Best move we ever made...and now the golf is free. ;)

yep. It'll be the little rubber thingy. Went through one this year. We keep it as a spare as it still pumps good but we replaced rather than just get the part.

RE: Canadian snowbirds - Out of country health insurance

Just to be clear here you are still covered by your Health Canada regardless of prexisting conditions or anything else. What you are not covered for is expenses above and beyond the Canadian health care schedule of procedure costs and hospital costs. If you are travelling to the states this can be a problem as it has the highest health care costs by far. However if you are travelling elsewhere it may not be a problem. Are you travelling to the US or Mexico? Does your credit card have 40 days of foreign travel coverage?

RE: Freigthliner or Spartan Chassis

I wouldn't let either be a deal breaker if everything else about the coach is equal. How's the floor plan, engine etc etc. In my line of work I get to drive them all and I'll go against the grain on this one and pick the one with a solid beam front end as a opposed to IFS. In your case it sounds like they both are so toss a coin. We have a freightliner under our existing coach (2003 Revolution) and it suits us fine. Having said that I am not a huge fan of the Spartan IFS suspension as far as driving long distances, handles bumps a little better in the city though...but really I probably wouldn't let it be a deal breaker either way.

RE: Any RV Parks near Los Mochis near the 15???

We stayed in Los Mochis on the way back last year. Pretty quiet. Young fellow that was there gave us a ride to the bank and back. All the basics. A little trafic noise and a gallo (rooster) or 6. Works good for overnight.

RE: US Dollars--take note:

Kinda like last year. What did I miss here as that is a far cry from 2 bucks Canadian per litre. At that price it is cheaper than Canadian gas at around 96 cents per litre.
